Being In The Band
Being In The Band
Tommy drudged around the arena slowly, yawning as he sat in one of the
VIP seats, listening as sound check started. His eyes slowly started
to close and he felt himself drifting off to sleep.
Tommy jumped, opening his eyes and looking around him. His eyes rested
on a grinning AJ and he sighed.
"Do that again, AJ, and you’ll end up with a broken wrist just like me,"
Tommy warned as he got comfortable again.
AJ sat next to him in a chair and sighed. "Ya know, Tommy, you gotta
lighten up, be loose for a while," he said.
"I am loose, AJ, what’s up with you, what do you have up your sleeve?"
Tommy asked, knowing exactly what was on his mind.
"Lizard," AJ said. "You see, she promised me that she would go out
with me one night-"
"On a date?"
"Sort of. But anyway, she promised she would and I wanted to take
her out the day after tomorrow, when we have another night off. I
wanted to know, since you know her best out of everyone here, what does
she like to do? What kind of things would she like to do on a quote,
un-quote date?" AJ asked.
Tommy furrowed his eyebrows in thought. "Well, if you really can’t
think of anything, she loves music and she does like to dance, so a club
would be good. If you’re going for something a little smaller, say
dinner, she likes Italian food, she’s half-Italian. Or if you really
want it relaxed, pizza would be good. Her favorite is either Hawaiian
pizza or the Lizard deluxe, as she calls it."
"Pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, onions, sausage, pineapple, black olives,
and bacon. She’s the only person I know who could ever stand that
entire thing, she used to get it all the time and everyone that wanted
a piece either ended up getting sick from it or they ended up taking off
a few toppings. That girl can eat with the best of them, but she’ll
find a way to work it off somehow," Tommy said, smiling as he remembered
one of his and Lizard’s funny conversations from a long time ago.
He remembered her when she was fourteen so easily, such a carefree child
that had such a big dream.
"Anything else I should know? Perhaps a dislike? A fear?
Anything that we could possibly come across while out on the streets of
town?" AJ asked.
Tommy started shaking his head. "No, I don’t think so…oh, wait, it
probably doesn’t mean anything, but if you go over any bridges, watch out,
‘cause she’ll flip, she hates going over bridges."
"Bridges?" AJ started to shake with laughter. "Why bridges?"
"Remember when Los Angeles had that earthquake a few years ago? And
how some guy caught on tape the suspension bridge splitting and the cars
falling and total chaos? Well, she saw that, she was supposed to
go to California then with her father, but she didn’t. And her father
was suppose to be on that bridge at the time it happened, but he was caught
in traffic or something, so she’s really paranoid about that, knowing that
they both narrowly escaped death," Tommy explained.
"Wow," AJ said softly. "This girl has been through some serious shit."
Tommy nodded. "Yeah, you could say
"AJ! GET BACK HERE, NOW!"
AJ laughed. "I gotta go, that’s my cue to hide, I think Nick found
out that I hid all his nintendo games," he said as he stood up. He
started running into the back and hid somewhere up top and Nick came out
from under the stage.
"Tommy, where’s AJ?" Nick called as he climbed the steps.
Tommy shrugged. "Not a clue, Nick, he couldn’t be up top," he replied,
rolling his eyes.
Nick looked at him curiously, and then it dawned on him. "Ohh, I
get it, thanks Tommy," he said, smiling.
Tommy shook his head as Nick hurried off, wondering if it ever were going
to happen that, one day, Nick wouldn’t be able to get a joke for an extended
period of time, one longer than just a few minutes.
"Hey, Lizard, what’s up?" He asked as she sat down next to him.
"Nothing much, really, just a little tired," she said.
Tommy laughed as he held back a yawn. "You aren’t the only one.
Listen, I kinda heard a little about last night, mind filling me in?"
He asked as discretely as possible.
Lizard sighed. "I take it Mindi
told you, considering Nick wants to forget about it," she said quietly.
Tommy regretfully nodded his head. "What happened?"
Lizard sighed. "To tell you the truth, I really don’t know.
One minute I'm talking about a movie with Nick, then we got onto the subject
of music, then he stole my sheet music and I had to get it back.
Of course, since he’s so friggin’ tall, he held it over his head.
So, what did I do but tickle him, and he tickled me back, then I got my
sheet music back. I put it away and, as I was turning back around,
he grabbed me and threw me on the bed, tickling me again. He stopped
when he’d touched me in an awkward way and apologized. The next thing
I knew, we were kissing and Mindi walked in on us. Nick ran out the
door, telling Mindi to forget what she saw ‘cause it never happened and
I didn’t get so much as a wave goodbye," she said exasperatedly.
Tommy shook his head slowly, amazed that Nick could’ve done such a thing.
He gave Lizard a quick hug as the rest of the band walked on stage.
"All I can say is that you can be sure that Nick will not live this down,
he will be getting a severe beat down," he said, following her to the stage.
"Tommy, please, just leave it be. I only told you ‘cause I’ve known
you for a long time and I know I can trust you with this. But please,
leave him alone, don’t get on his case, just let him be," Lizard asked,
looking at him seriously.
"Only if you say so," Tommy said slowly.
Lizard nodded as she walked off, climbing up on the stage and started warming
up with the rest of the band. Tommy walked beneath the stage, sitting
in the main green room and staring ahead at nothing.
"Don’t think too hard, you’ll set off the smoke alarms," Brian warned as
he walked in.
"Where did you hear that from?" Tommy asked, knowing he’d only heard
it once before.
Brian smiled. "Lizard," he said simply. He left the room and
Tommy sighed again.
‘Lizard has such an impact on everyone here, why is it the only one who
shuns her is Nick? What is bugging him?’ Tommy thought.
He shook away the thought and stood up, going back to the stage to talk
to some people.
