The Three Types of Horses

Hot Bloods

Characteristics of this type are:

  • High Spirited
  • Thin Light Bodies
  • High Endurance
  • High Metabolism
  • Exciting and Excitable
  • Eager Competitors
  • Distance Runners
These horses were bred to be good racers.They are good show horses. They love the competition. Some of the other breeds of horses in this type are the Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and Americanbred.

Warm Bloods

Characteristics of this type are:

  • Sturdy
  • Short distance runners
  • Work horses
  • Larger and heavier than Hot bloods
  • Calmer but more animated
  • Easy going
  • Long distance trail riding
UP The breeds that are members of this type are the American Quarter horse, Appaloosa as you see in the picture, Morgans, Mustangs, and a group of gaited horses. The gaited horses were bred for their smooth ride. This elite group are the Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Fox trotters, Paso Finos, and Peruvian Pasos, to name just a few.

Cold Blood

Characteristics of this last type are:

  • Heavily muscled horses
  • Easy going disposition
  • Draft horses used for pulling
  • Slow to get excited
  • Huge bodies
  • Love interaction with people
The breeds that comprise this type are the Percheron, Clydesdales, the Belgium Draft horse, and the Fresians.
