When Ambrose gave up fishing, he went to work with Baine Johnston and Company ,a merchant and importer and exporter company, located at 205 Water Street, St. John's. Among other things, they had a floating dock large enough to support the wooden ships. There were no steamers in those days. When he became to old for manual work, Baine Johnston kept him on the payroll by giving him a job as a watchman. They also gave him a house nearby. His grandson George Critch visited there often. He had to give up his job, when he fell through the pier one day. Some workman doing repairs failed to cover a hole. Soon after this incident, he passed away at 115 Cabot Street St. John's( This was his son John Thomas Critch residence.)

. Per 1921 Census record- Reel M-8031 Pt. 4 page 505 Ambrose was living at Ft. Amherest with his wife Flora, daughter Jessie, and stepson Stephen French and his wife Johanna. ( I believe this is the concrete house his grandaughter Margorie Critch Learning spoke of on South Side

Per August 1897 marriage record to Flora, Ambrose was age 48 which made his birthday 1848. Per 1921 Census record Ambrose was 80 years old which would make his bithdate 1841. Per his death on July 1929 it gives his age as 92 which makes his birthdate 1838.

Robert Baine & Co., from Greenock, Scotland began business in Port de Grave, 1780, with Robert, Archibald, & Walter Baine as partners, later James Lang entered the partnershipm which became, Lang, Baine, & Co., 1817. The firm transfered to St. John's, to become Baine, Johnston & co., after the introduction of William Johnston, by 1817.
