Obama Has to Hold Bush Accountable for the Laws He Broke

Obama Has to Hold Bush Accountable for the Laws He Broke

Obama cannot let former Bush administration officials get away with breaking the law without violating his own oath of office. Read more »

We're into our second week of President Obama's new administration and are already seeing signs of change. Yet many activists want to make sure we as a nation don't forget the possible crimes committed under the last administration in the name of the "war on terror." That's why we're sharing with you this action alert from our friends at www.Democrats.com Sign their petition to call on our new Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute any and all government officials who have participated in torture and other war crimes. Thanks!

Now is our time to pursue truth and justice. Please join us in calling on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute any and all government officials who have participated in torture and other war crimes.

In the final days of their administration, President Bush and Vice President Cheney admitted they authorized "enhanced interrogation" of prisoners, specifically including waterboarding. But "enhanced interrogation" is simply a euphemism for torture, which was so severe that it caused the deaths of at least 70 prisoners.

Please sign our petition calling for a Special Prosecutor now»

As Major General Antonio Taguba, the Army general who led the investigation into prisoner abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison has stated:

"After years of disclosures by government investigations, media accounts and reports from human rights organizations, there is no longer any doubt as to whether the current administration has committed war crimes. The only question that remains to be answered is whether those who ordered the use of torture will be held to account."

The United States is a representative democracy. The actions of our government officials are done in the name of its citizens. We are outraged that torture been committed in our name. Join us in urging Attorney General Holder to appoint a Special Prosecutor to prosecute those responsible for torture to the fullest extent of the law.

Thanks for everything you do.

Judge Allows No Delay of Miers's Testimony About Fired Prosecutors
By Dan EggenWashington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 27, 2008; Page A11
A federal judge yesterday refused to delay his order requiring former White House counsel Harriet E. Miers to testify in Congress, another legal setback for the Bush administration's attempts to limit cooperation with Democratic lawmakers.
U.S. District Judge John D. Bates rejected the administration's argument that Miers should not be required to cooperate with Congress while the government appeals an earlier ruling he issued.
In the previous decision, Bates rejected the administration's assertions that Miers and White House Chief of Staff Joshua B. Bolten were protected by executive privilege and could not be forced to testify or provide documents to Congress about the controversial firings of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006. The judge said that the government's position was excessively broad and that senior aides must be more specific about the information they say is protected.
The new ruling will make it more difficult for Miers to avoid testifying by running out the clock on the 110th Congress, which ends in early January. Without a stay, she could be compelled to appear before the House Judiciary Committee as early as next month.
Lawmakers are seeking testimony from Miers and documents from Bolten as part of an ongoing inquiry into the prosecutor firings and broader allegations of politicization at the Justice Department, primarily under former attorney general Alberto R. Gonzales. The House and Senate judiciary panels also have voted to hold former presidential adviser Karl Rove in contempt for refusing to testify about the dismissals.
In his ruling yesterday, Bates wrote that "Ms. Miers' testimony may help Congress finally determine what remedial legislative steps, if any, should be taken in response to the forced resignations."
The judge also wrote that the administration "has supplied no justification, and the court cannot fathom one, for its failure to turn over non-privileged documents to the committee."
Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), the Judiciary Committee's chairman, said he is "heartened" by the ruling and vowed to "promptly schedule a hearing" for Miers.
"Today's ruling clearly rejects the White House's efforts to run out the clock on the committee's investigation," Conyers said in a statement.

How Should the Next President Deal with the Bush White House's Crimes?

"The laws and Constitution are designed to survive, and remain in force, in extraordinary times."

-- Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote in today’s landmark Supreme Court decision.

You’ve been standing with us in these extraordinary times. Now, it’s time to tell America’s leaders to close Guantánamo, end indefinite detention without charge, and restore the rule of law.

FISA Flood: Next Steps  Recent polls show that 59% of American voters reject amnesty for phone companies that may have violated the law by selling customers’ private information, preferring to let courts decide the outcome. But instead of pushing to hold phone companies accountable for violating Americans’ privacy, Sen. Rockefeller is rushing to give them immunity.

Audacious  The most recent FISA bill being considered by the Senate has a long way to go before it upholds the Constitution and the rule of law. Yet some senators have the audacity to repeatedly clear proposed legislation with the NSA -- the very agency whose actions they should be investigating and reining in.  Take action: Demand your Senators fix FISA.

Wolfowitz is following standard procedure for these guys...  He thinks the rule of law, moral principles, and legal requirements do not apply to him.  The world bank should simply fire him.  His petty arrogance and abject incompetence has compromised their mission.  He deserves no "deal."

George Bush, praises Wolfowitz... After it becomes clear that his arrogance and irresponsible behavior has compromised the World Bank.  Every time Bush appoints some unqualified crony or corrupt associate who then fails, Bush seems either incapable of recognizing the consequences of his poor management, or simply clueless.  Neither is acceptable.  Bush, Cheney, and Gonzales need be impeached.  It has become a pressing matter of national national security.  Contact your representatives and let them know.

The Supreme Court did the nation a favor yesterday: It confirmed a basic—but contested—cornerstone of the Republic: that we have a government of laws, not of the president or the vice president’s whims. To be sure, the opportunity remains for Congress to pour fresh shame on America’s name, of course, by abandoning the wise restraints of extant law in favor of kangaroo courts grounded in torture and detentions that push men to the point of suicide. But this will only alienate us more from our allies around the world and feed further the frothing paranoia on which al-Qaida thrives. Honoring tradition, and striving to remain faithful to the best ideals of American justice, is the best way, the only way to secure both our liberties and our continuing safety.  *Rise and Demise of the "New American Century"                Click to comment

Bush Is Not Above the Law   By JAMES BAMFORD
Is the president guilty of committing a felony by continuously reauthorizing the warrantless eavesdropping program for the past five years? And if so, what action must be taken?
The blind defense by Republicans of President Bush and his policies is the partisanship that is destroying America.
Our nation's safety and most importantly our nation's soul are seriously jeopardized when any president, Republican or Democrat, willfully breaks the Geneva Conventions, subverts justice by running secret prisons and detaining people indefinitely, illegally spies on American citizens, fixes intelligence and facts to fit policy, and uses lies and deceptions to create support for a deadly war.
We cannot fight injustice with more injustice; we cannot fight terrorism with torture. Republicans need to place nation above party; Democrats need to place courage above pollsters' cautions and work together to impeach George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales and any other administration figures involved in subverting the rule of law and ultimately the struggle against terrorism.
