Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration.
- 2pm, Monday January 15, 2007 people can begin
gathering for the march at Sisters (133 NW 6th Ave). There
will be some snacks for people to munch on before they begin
marching.
- At 3pm, the march will leave from Sisters and
follow West Broadway to a rally at 1615 SW 5th, St. Mary’s
Academy, who have generously donated their building - thank
you SO MUCH, St. Mary’s!
- At 4pm the rally at St. Mary’s Academy’s begins:
If you don’t want to participate in the march, feel free to
meet us at St. Mary’s for an hour-long rally featuring
Willie Baptist.

Event: MLK 2007: Living the Legacy
starting January 18, 2007 Starts: 7:00pm
Charles Johnson, nationally recognized novelist, short
story writer, essayist and cartoonist, will deliver the
keynote address at PSU's annual community-wide event
celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. The event is sponsored by Portland State University and
Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Charles Johnson, a scholar of African-American literature,
first came to prominence as a political cartoonist. In 1970,
he published a collection of cartoons that led to a
television series on PBS. Johnson won the National Book
Award in 1990 for Middle Passage, which embodies his
provocative version of black literature and in 2003
published Turning the Wheel, a collection of essays about
his experiences as an African-American Buddhist. He is
currently the S. Wilson and Grace M. Pollock Endowed
Professor of English at the University of Washington and is
a MacArthur Fellow. He is also the recipient of a Guggenheim
Fellowship.
