The Metolius River Basin is a unique Oregon jewel that
attracts visitors from around the world. Rising from a spring
and home to the endangered bull trout, the Metolius River is
worthy of the strongest protection possible to preserve this
treasure for future generations.
Right now, the Metolius is under threat from development of
two destination resorts proposed in and near the basin. The
Dutch Pacific development would include 450 homes and a
150-room lodge; the Ponderosa Land and Cattle Company
development would weigh in with 2500 homes and two golf
courses. Tell
your legislator to vote yes on HB 3100 to protect the Metolius.
House Bill 3100 would declare the Metolius an “Area of
Critical State Concern (ACSC)” and adopt a management plan
that would limit development in and around the basin. The ACSC
designation would ratify a March 13 recommendation by the Land
Conservation and Development Commission that is based on a
study documenting the sensitive nature of the Basin and the
need for special protection to preserve it. Hundreds of
Oregonians have testified at hearings in support of this
designation. Email
your legislator today to say you support ACSC designation for
the Metolius River Basin.
Unfortunately, very powerful developers are fighting to kill
HB 3100. Specifically, a bill with overwhelming public support
is being held hostage by two developers, their attorneys and
lobbyists.
Your help is needed now to protect the Metolius River!
Ask
your state legislators to invest in the Oregon New Teacher &
Principal Mentor Program to improve our education system.
Good teachers are the key to a great education.
And every child in Oregon deserves a shot at greatness.
To build a strong future economy, we’ve got to invest in our
public schools. Oregon has found a proven track to good
teaching and better students: Teacher Mentoring.
This school year, nearly 1,000 of Oregon’s new teachers are
learning best practices from trained, tested veteran teachers.
It makes better teachers and successful students. We can
do more.
Children with the greatest learning challenges are most
likely to be taught by new teachers with inadequate support.
With effective mentorship, students in new teachers’
classrooms improve as much as students with veteran teachers.
In tough budgetary times, we can only afford the programs
that work. Improving teacher quality is one of the
lowest-cost, highest-return investments we can make.
Here in Oregon, we care a lot about fixing our
health care system. Thankfully, President Obama
shares that passion for reform.
But the controversy surrounding Sen. Daschle has
endangered the momentum of health reform. We can
restore power to this mission by sending Gov. John
Kitzhaber, M.D. to Washington as President Obama’s
Health Czar.
GOV. KITZHABER, M.D. IS
THE PERFECT FIT FOR HEALTH CZAR
From his experience as an emergency-room-trained
physician, state legislator and governor, Gov.
Kitzhaber understands the true nature of the broken
system, and what it will take for us to address the
problems at hand.*
He believes we need a health system designed to
maximize the health of Americans; we can’t just look
for more money to finance our current broken system.
He has a vision for a new health system with three
simple goals:
Improve the overall health of the population
Reduce the per-person cost of health care
Improve the individual patient experience in
terms of clinical outcome, patient safety and
patient satisfaction
* While in the Oregon Senate, John Kitzhaber lead
the effort to transform Oregon’s implementation of
Medicaid, the federal program for poor and at-risk
Americans. Before the
Oregon Health Plan, our Medicaid program divided
poor Oregonians into arbitrary categories and
defined eligibility by category.
A Note from Onward Oregon: There might be no such thing as a perfect bill,
much less a perfect health care bill. We have heard
concerns from some members of the Onward Oregon
community that both SB 27 and SB 329 contain provisions
addressing medical liability. The only data we have seen
suggests that compensation for medical damages is not a
meaningful portion of health care costs. The Onward
Oregon community would not support reducing legal
protections for patients, and we offer no support for
this provision. We urge the drafters of these bills to
consider amendments ensuring a patient's access to
justice as well as promoting greater transparency and
accountability. From what we hear, amendments are in the
works.
Dear concerned citizen,
A variety of options now before the Oregon Legislature can
address health care reform in meaningful ways.
It is critical that the legislature continue to hear from
working people about passing these five pieces of legislation
that can address the immediate crisis and
long-term systemic challenges.
Historic Opportunity
According to our poll of Onward Oregon members, health care is
the number one domestic issue of the day. Never before has such
clear agreement existed throughout Oregon that our health care
system is too expensive, confusing, inefficient, and
inaccessible, and that it does not do enough to promote health.
The cost of providing care to the over 600,000 Oregonians
without insurance is passed along to those who are insured, and
care is not provided in the most efficient setting.
We need immediate measures to create some health security for
Oregonians today, and we must begin immediately to work on
comprehensive reform of our entire health system.

moral failure of those who evade the fact that there can be
no compromise on basic principles."
