2007 DC Labor Filmfest http://www.dclabor.org/ht/display/EventDetails/i/45137/pid/538 unofficially begins Friday, September 7, with a free noontime screening of "No Sweat" at the AFL-CIO. The hour-long documentary follows American Apparel and Sweat X and their workers for one year as they grapple with trying to maintain "sweat-free" practices in the cutthroat garment industry. "No Sweat" is the first of six free screenings in September and early October leading up to the official Labor FilmFest October 7-17. Jim Hightower will introduce "China Blue" at an October 7 screening at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md., and acclaimed director Ken Loach -- a tireless activist whose films have moved and inspired audiences for over five decades -- will present the U.S. premiere of his latest film, "It's A Free World." on the FilmFest's Opening Night on October 11; the FilmFest line-up includes a retrospective of both his best-known and rarely-screened films. If you can t make it to the Washington, D.C., area for this filmfest, the AFT and other union affiliates in your area may like to organize one of our own. The D.C. Labor Council has a master list of labor films that can be potentially be used for film festivals and staff can help local organizers determine the best model to follow for their community.
