| "Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established, should not be changed for light and transient causes; and, accordingly, all experience [has] shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security." --Thomas Jefferson: Declaration of Independence, 1776. ME 1:29, Papers 1:429 | |
“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” Thomas Jefferson "A little rebellion now and then... is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.” Thomas Jefferson "Difference of opinion leads to enquiry, and enquiry to truth; and that, I am sure, is the ultimate and sincere object of us both. We both value too much the freedom of opinion sanctioned by our Constitution, not to cherish its exercise even where in opposition to ourselves." --Thomas Jefferson "Men, according to their constitutions and the circumstances in which they are placed, differ honestly in opinion. Some are whigs, liberals, democrats, call them what you please. Others are tories, serviles, aristocrats, etc." --Thomas Jefferson "In every country where man is free to think and to speak, differences of opinion will arise from difference of perception." --Thomas Jefferson "[It is] the people, to whom all authority belongs." --Thomas Jefferson Portrait of Thomas Jefferson by Thomas Sully "The ultimate arbiter is the people of the Union." --Thomas Jefferson "The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to." --Thomas Jefferson "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Thomas Jefferson "What county can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that its people preserve the spirit of resistance." Thomas Jefferson |

| When once a republic is corrupted there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption . . . every other correction is either useless or a new evil. - Thomas Jefferson | |
