Hamas and the Peace Process in Israel.
Hamas must pursue
peace... The European Union's external relations commissioner said that if Hamas is part of a new Palestinian government, it must be "ready to work for peace." Yet the process of securing a lasting peace is compromised when irresponsible politicians make blanket claims that Hamas is not peace partner. When Israeli labor leader Amir Peretz said that his party does not consider Hamas a partner for peace negotiations, this statement is precipitous and counterproductive. Hamas has provided for the needs of many Palestinian people and has observed a truce for the past year, in spite of repeated attacks and incursions by Israel. Hamas could become a peace partner when and if the organization distances itself from extremist factions who call for the destruction of Israel. And Israel can become a more effective partner for peace when home destructions, crop destruction, wall-building, assassinations, bombing of residences, and seizures of water resources are ended. Enforcement of an econcomic blockade is a violation of the Geneva Conventions and is a provocative act. Tim Flanagan www.WritingResource.org/ |
