Position Description

The primary responsibility of a tutor is to provide individual and small group tutoring sessions in basic skills. Tutors also help the Instructor of Record facilitate self-paced classes. Tutors foster successful, independent learning and integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress. Faculty Tutors also act as mentors for student tutors and work to increase the student tutor’s understanding of the tutoring/learning process. In addition, Tutors actively participate in the development and delivery of student tutor training. Tutors are also expected to refer students to other appropriate college resources as needed.

Responsibilities

Tutor students in basic reading and writing skills.

Assist Instructor of Record with self-paced orientation sessions.

Assist self-paced English students with curriculum packet progress.

Confer with Instructor of Record regarding student progress.

Integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.

Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills.

Participate in required tutor training.

Attend staff meetings.

Work as a positive "team member" for the benefit of the entire Center.

Mentor student tutors and assist with their training.

Supervise the Center when full-time staff members are not in the center.

Make appropriate referrals to other campus resources and inform the Coordinator of any referral.

Assist students with the use of tutorial technology.

Assist in the overall promotion of the Centers.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education, Specific Discipline, or a closely-related field.

Demonstrated knowledge of tutoring techniques and strategies.

Ability and willingness to mentor student tutors.

Demonstrated ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students, other tutors, and the Instructor of Record.

Preference will be given to tutors with at least one year of tutoring experience.

v1 Hired tutors will be offered 6-15 hours per week. Applicants should be available to tutor at least two days per week.

v2 Tentative assignments will be made by the academic year. However, official employment is on a term-by-term basis according to the Portland Community College Faculty Contract. Hours are subject to change.
