Denotative and Connotative Meanings

Denotation is a dictionary meaning.

Connotation is meanings associated with words which go beyond the dictionary
                   definitions.  These meanings carry an extra emotional charge and
                   may be positive, negative, or neutral.

Elvis Presley 1969 - 1977

 "Elvis was fat, half-dead, bloated, and swearing, tossing soaked scarves
                  into the audience, walking through cruel parodies of his songs."

~~~fat, bloated and sweating are derogatory and insulting...
The above passage could be rewritten:
"Elvis was overweight, tired, perspiring, and tossing soaked scarves into the
     audience.  He sang his songs without feeling."
Euphemisms:  When someone substitutes inoffensive words or phrases for
                         ones that are likely to be offensive, this technique is called
                         using "euphemisms."
                         Example:  Math problems can instead be called math "challenges."
Propaganda:   Name Calling, Glittering Generalities, Transfer, False Analogy, Testimonial, etc..
