The Smyly family came to America from County Antrim, Ireland but were of Scottish origin. The names Smiley and Smyly in Ireland were introduced by settlers who arrived from Scotland during the seventeenth century. The main settlement point was in the Province of Ulster and in County Tyrone in particular, where the majority of descendants can still be found. Smylie is another variant.
