There has been enormous research and technologies developed for silica nano particle synthesis to date. But most of these processes are carried out under severe temperature, pressure and / or pH conditions and / or in presence of a solvent. In our group at University of Cincinnati, we are investigating the silica nano particle synthesis at neutral pH and ambient conditions. Learning the silica formation in diatoms, we are improving the process by using cationically charged synthetic polymer as a catalyst / template.
