Okay, I admit it, I must be totally nuts.

Looking at the calendar, I see I've been giving out these Registrations for more than two years now.

Free. At no cost whatsoever. And all they cost me is my time.

For a while, it kept me pretty busy, because for some reason they wouldn't seem to Download properly: they required folders with special names, wouldn't work without a 9000 upgrade, and required special settings and a lot of patience -- but, with the help of others**, I kept trying various methods until we found a way to make the job "simpler."

Sure, I don't charge anything for the more than 380 Registrations, but maybe I should. They were made for just the PSR-9000 and the 9000 Pro, but according to several who have tried, more than half of the 380 even work in their new Tyros! * * *

Just What Are "Registrations," Anyway?

Most of you already know about Registrations. If you're not using them, at least you've seen them on your Yamaha (and other) keyboards. Perhaps you don't know it, but REGISTRATIONS ARE YOUR VERY BEST FRIEND when it comes to squeezing Quality Sounds out of your keyboard.

Why? Because a Registration is nothing more than a "frozen" setup in which Voices, Effects, Harmony, EQ, Touch Sensitivity, Panning, and many other features are WORKING TOGETHER to produce a more pleasing and effective sound... and a good Registration setup can be very beautiful to listen to. Unfortunately, most of us are not Programmers, and either don't want to or don't have the time to learn Programming.

That's where I come in.

Having had several years of experience in programming both computers, keyboards, synthesizers, and sound modules, I got ahold of a PSR-9000 and decided to set up a few fancy programs (Registrations) and make the keyboard REALLY show off its potential. But somehow, I went completely wacko and didn't stop until I had created more than 380 Registrations, each different, and also a few "tweaked" Styles. (A "tweaked" Style is one from the Styles area of the keyboard that is set up with several Variations of the basic Styles Voices... so that each variation has DIFFERENT Voices, Panning, Reverb, Velocity, EQ, or whatever else, in place of the originals.)

As it turned out, I was so enthralled by these beautiful sounds the 9000 had enabled me to create, that I felt it would be rather selfish to just keep them for my own. So... I decided to give them away.

I didn't know what I was getting into.

So You Didn't Receive Your Registrations? Good grief!

Sure, it can happen. And of the more than 450 persons who have so far requested that I send the Registrations, only about 12 percent wrote back afterward to let me know they'd been received. And since email DOES often fail, I never knew (a) if the Registrations were never received, (b) if they were received but didn't download properly due to inexperience, poor software, not following directions, or some other reason; (c) if they were received but were used incorrectly,* or (d) if there are still people out there waiting for me to Send Their Registrations, who are too bashful to inquire WHY THEY NEVER ARRIVED. (One gent in Tacoma, Washington wrote me THREE TIMES, asking if I would send the Registrations. I sent them EACH TIME. He never did write back, so I don't know if he's received them. For all I know, he may still be waiting.) And you wonder why I doubt the reliability of email?

Fortunately, most of the 12 percent who did write back were quite pleased, and a few even wrote Rave Reviews -- which was encouraging.

And so, it is to those who were kind enough to write back, that this page is dedicated. Its purpose? To let ALL PSR-9000 and 9000 Pro owners know that the Registrations are STILL AVAILABLE, and if somehow you were missed the first time around, I feel terrible about it but we can try again.

*(Registrations only work well if both the Accompaniment and the Registration "Freeze" buttons are turned ON; also, I only worked on the Voices... YOU need to select the Style you want. Please don't be one of those who expect me to do EVERYTHING. If I had attached a specific Style to each Registration, I would be hearing "WHY did you use that crappy style?" LOL.)

And while we're on the subject of "personal tastes," let me clue you in about mine: most of my Registrations have set-ups that are geared toward Easy Listening, New Age, Country, Ballads, Light Rock, Swing, Big Band, Dixieland, and certain types of jazz. If you like playing Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Acid Rock, or anything using a Distortion Guitar, you probably won't enjoy many of these Registrations.

ANOTHER REASON WHY The Registrations Don't Show Up

(I just got this note in the mail. Here it is, word for word):

"Hi Dave,

I just received your e-mail with the attachments, but for some reason I am unable to open the attachments. My e-mail-Outlook Express will not recognize attachments. Is there any other way I may receive them?

Thanks for your help."

In cases like this, I have another way of getting the Registrations to you, a way that Email cannot affect. So remember, there is always hope.

If you want the 380 Registrations, here's HOW to get them:

Currently, the only way to obtain Pipelinerr's 380 Registrations is to send an email request and Dave will send an attachment of "zipped" Registrations by return mail:

EMAIL DAVE: (updated 2/18/2003)

Please State Whether You Want Registrations for the 9000 models, or the Tyros

(NOTE: WHEN YOU CLICK ON THIS EMAIL ADDRESS, THE SPACES WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY REMOVED. THEY WERE INSERTED TO CONFUSE THE AUTOMATIC SPAM HARVESTING PROGRAMS.)

HOW THE REGISTRATIONS GOT STARTED:

Vince Marek started it all off in the PSR-Styles Group on July 18, 2001 (message #4856) with this rather eloquent post:

"A week or two ago Dave sent me over 100 of his registrations for which I am ever so thankful. This man has a great talent for taking a voice and then varying all the different parameters such as filters, equalizers, effects, etc and then appropriately mixing several voices together to get the most beautiful sounds. I was able to take his zip package and load it on my 9000 PRO on the first pass. Smooth as silk.

Being new to the instrument(and this group), Dave's registrations have helped me immensely. I have learned how to get in there and tweak voices on my own. His sharing was generous and greatly appreciated. For Dave and those like him who want to share their creations and contribute to the education of others like me, this group should so facilitate. One day I hope to do the same.

Heck, just appreciation for beautiful sounds is justification in itself for such a file."

Vince M.

MORE TESTIMONIALS:
(received in email)

"Hi Dave... you... should now be aware that everything is OK. I am all loaded and have listened to many of the sounds and am gobsmacked. They are brilliant, you must have spent an eternity setting them all up. You have my admiration."
(Rob Faint)

"Just love all these regs I've got, especially those that repeat, wow !!!!!! Only been through some of them so far and they are absolutely fabulous."
(Shirley, New Zealand)

"Your registrations are GREAT - you have some really good combinations, and the effects added are excellent - we are very grateful for you making these available, being very much a keyboard enthusiast myself I know the time you have spent in doing these."
(Frances S.)

Post Script

** Let's not forget these marvelous, terrific people who helped me out: George Allison, Vince Marek, Bill and Frances, John CN Yap, George in the U.K., Ronny Buermans, Gail Cummings, Simon Williams, Michael Bedesem, and the very dedicated Ms. Shirley. And if I've left anyone out, please forgive me. Without their unswerving dedication, helpfulness, and a number of back-and-forth emails, I never could have gotten the Registrations to work in other "9000" keyboards.

Registrations For The Tyros?

*** According to several who have tried the Pipelinerr Registrations in their new Tyros, more than half of the 380 work just fine.

However, many do fail. This is probably because some voices I created on the 9000 were Custom Voices (had faster decay, slower attack, repeating echoes, etc.) -- and Customs are apparently set up differently on the Tyros.

Tyros File Conversion Software

Originally, in order to use these Registrations in the Tyros, you needed Yamaha's TYROS FILE CONVERSION SOFTWARE, which you can get right here, thanks to another Tyros owner who was kind enough to send it:

Tyros File Conversion Download

However, if you want the Pipelinerr Registrations now, you won't need it. Thanks to Michael Bedesem, the Registrations are available ALREADY CONVERTED for the new Tyros. All you need to do is write and ask for them.

Help Operating the Tyros

Joe Waters tells us the Tyros is similar enough to the PSR-2000 that much of what works for one will work for the other. Joe says:

Not owning a 2000, you probably haven't spent much if any time looking at the PSR-2000 Tutorial site. But, now that you are expecting a TYROS, you can get a jump start by reviewing some of the material there. The TYROS works pretty much like the PSR-2000 (and the CVP pianos). The screen shots will look nicer, but they'll show the same functions.

If you review the lessons on the Music Finder, I did put a few Tyros screens in there so they could be compared with the equivalent PSR-2000 screens so readers could see how close they are.

I could put a lot more Tyros screens throughout that Tutorial, but have been waiting to get my new computer completely installed and set up before starting that. The lessons there on Registrations, modifying accompaniment styles, creating OTS, will all be applicable to the Tyros. The Tyros will have MORE options in various places, like having the three intro buttons on the keyboard instead of just one.

When you look at the file system it operates the same, but the Tyros has an additional area for files. The PSR-2000 only has PRESET, USER, and FLOPPY DISK. The Tyros can also have a HARD DRIVE. If you don't already have it, here is Joe's link:

http://psrtutorial.com/
(JOE'S EXCELLENT PSR-2000 & TYROS TUTORIAL)

[NOTE: Both Joe and I have tried every way we know, but still my Registrations WILL NOT work in the PSR-2000. Please do not write and ask me to send them if you are a 2000 owner.]

UNDERSTANDING THE TYROS

Here we are gradually adding SOME NEW PAGES that will hopefully make the Tyros easier to understand.

Reasons That Some Of You May Be
Dissatisfied With The Registrations

Oh, there are so many reasons! It's painful, so painful to talk about, I tell you.

Nevertheless I will force myself to talk about "a few".

(MUSICAL TASTES):
Yes, as mentioned above, my tastes in music do not run the same as everyone's. I created these to be used in Music That Has An Actual Melody, as well as certain types of jazz. This will make some of you who like Rap, Punk Rock, and screaming guitars, very unhappy.

(FRAGILITY):
Next, these Registrations are FRAGILE! Yes, fragile. Once downloaded into your 9000, they will work just fine UNTIL SUDDENLY perhaps half of them begin to sound VERY WEIRD. This is because you neglected to BACK UP the Registrations (as I had suggested) so that when you turned off your 9000, EVERY CUSTOM VOICE that I sent you IMMEDIATELY VANISHED. And so did the quality of the many Registrations which required those Custom Voices in order to sound good.

(SOME ARE MISSING?)
A few have complained that "some" of the Registrations, specifically Banks 57 through 62, are MISSING. True. The "Registrations" are missing because they were never intended to be there. (As I explain on my "9000 Help Station" page under "Tweaking Accompaniment Voices," Banks 57-62 have only my "tweaked" Styles. That is, in Bank 57, Registration #1 holds an "untweaked" Style. Then #2 has THE SAME STYLE with different Pan positions, drums, voices, DSP, etc. to demonstrate how you, too, can make ONE STYLE sound almost like a whole other style. And #3 is another variation, and so is #4, #5, #6, #7, and #8. You'll find ANOTHER style in Bank 58, with Variations in all 8 there also. And it's the same with Bank 59 thru 62... different variations of the same style. None of these is "remarkable," because I didn't have time to really work at it. But it's enough so you can see what a little "tweaking" of your own can do.)

(HARSHNESS):
A very few have complained that the Registrations sometimes sound "harsh" or "aggressive." Yes, this is true, if you are in an acoustically "live" environment... with no drapery, sofas, carpets, etc. to absorb the sound. Read again my pages on "Tweaking" and you will learn how to correct this.

(SOME EMAIL WILL DELETE THE REGISTRATIONS):
Finally, some of you may have email programs that Automatically Delete any attachments, to prevent viruses. Which means that when I send the Registrations to you -- you will receive NOTHING! (I'm sure there are some out there who received a BLANK email from me saying "Here are your Registrations," who hate me to this day.)

People I Sent Registrations To Who Never Wrote Back

Did they receive them? Did they enjoy them? We may never know.

But if your name is on this list and somehow you never got your Registrations, let me know and I will give you TOP PRIORITY!

That's right -- I will mail yours ahead of any others, as soon as you inform me!

Those Who Never Wrote Back and therefore may not have received their Registrations are...

Steven Gotch -- Jerry Cross -- Elvis Figredo -- Donny -- Phil G.Muller -- Ove Kristensen -- Andre Lachance -- Greg Peterson -- Don Murray -- Werner Finkeldei -- Tony Crowder -- Christian Zerle -- Jan Brink -- Leyton Witana -- J.B.W. GIVING AWAY REGISTRATION SECRETS

(How Did Dave Do It, Anyway?)

A number of keyboardists, both amateurs and pros, have asked me to explain "more" about how I set up the Registrations to sound so good. As I find time, I'm going to try and answer that question. Right here.

[1] STEREO SEPARATION. Many were amazed at the way TWO voices were playing side-by-side, with a sterephonic separation of 1-2 feet or more. Of course for those of you familiar with the word PAN, it wasn't amazing at all. PAN, in addition to being a Greek god depicted as a bizarre beast who is 50% man, 50% goat, and 100% horny, (from where we get the name Pan Flute, which he is reputed to play), is a word that has other meanings also. For keyboardists, PAN refers to "positioning" of the Stereo Voices. To PAN LEFT means one voice is set toward the left side, and to PAN RIGHT... well, I'm sure you get it.

With two voices set up to play together and be spatially "apart," the effect is nice enough. But can it sound better still?

[2] HARMONY. Oh, indeed it can. Many keyboards of today now have a built-in "Harmony" feature -- which allows two (or even three) voices to play together in perfect harmony. And as I've said before, Harmony doesn't simply mean the voices are playing together at once. It means they HARMONIZE! Yes, the computers built into many keyboards now can instantly calculate WHICH NOTES WILL BEST HARMONIZE with any given note you are playing! So if you're playing, say, an "A" using the Violin on the left side, the keyboard's computer might cause the Flute on the right to respond with an "F." And this is Harmony -- a beautiful effect, normally quite difficult for many musicians, which is now done automatically for you with every note you play. "Harmony" and some discreet Panning, are largely responsible for the stunning beauty of most of the Pipelinerr Registrations.
