Product Differentiation on the Web

Shopping on the web is difficult these days!

Not because of the lack of choice--there are a plethora of products out there. The problem lies with finding the products (basically you have to know what you are looking for in the first place) and having faith in the products that you find. Companies have been trying to get you to their products--for a while now, but once you find the site there is not sufficient differentiation to influence you to buy the product. In other words, how can you feel assured investing in a product when you do not have sufficient knowledge of the brand.

Consumers will typically differentiate between products and services on the basis of price, the buying experience, visual, ease-of-use and, performance comparisons, fears and assurances, and social influence of others.

The Web's greatest advantage is the ease of shopping. We can sit at home between chores and do price comparisions and order our desired goods and services in a fraction of the time it takes to get to various stores. Most web companies focus on this--they typically compete with cost and availability. But cost and availability are only part of the picture. Web companies should start letting us know why we want their product. They have sparked our interest--now help us with choice !!
