CHANGE OF OPINION 03/06/04 If you'd said that James Charles Hughes would be signing for Emmanuel you'd have been passed off as a mad man. Hughes was an avid critic of the Reds in those days and an even fiercer critic of the SAD League. Yet, less than two years down the line Hughes has put pen to paper in a deal that will see him permanently in a Red's shirt after a brief lone spell earlier in the season. "I'm delighted to be signing full terms with Emmanuel", admitted Hughes. "I enjoyed playing on loan with the lads last season. It was good to enjoy my football again. We have a lot to be going for next season. We all want to ensure this club gains the championship for a third consecutive year. We also have a score to settle about the cup. The lads have told me how gutted they were in losing in the cup to Glenwood, but we have doubled our resolve and will be going for it with all guns blazing next season." LEWY'S THANKS 03/06/04 Steve
Lewis was named the Emmanuel Cardiff player of the season on Tuesday
night. The vote was very close but Lewis won the award with Dave Lansdown
placed second and Owen Davies third. Lewis, pictured left receiving his
award, was delighted to win the award, but thanked his fellow players for
helping him have the most enjoyable football season yet.
"It's been awesome this season. I think we've deserved it. We've scored more and conceded less than any team and more importantly, we have more points! I have enjoyed this season more than any other. People will tell you that playing in the Combination League is a better standard of football, but I have to say that I have never enjoyed my football so much, we have such a great bunch of lads here, everything is relaxed and we just get on with the job in hand. Our job for next year? winning the title for a third consecutive season. It'll be hard, but we'll give it our best shot!" I NEARLY QUIT 03/06/04 In a passionate speech at the official Emmanuel Cardiff FC Presentation Dinner, manager Gareth Davies admitted that he nearly quit, but was now fully focussed on bringing a third championship in three years to the Reds. The shock revelation that Davies was thinking of stepping aside came as a surprise to many at the dinner, but all were glad that he was to stay on for a third term at least. "Those of you who know me best will know that I decided this season would be my last at the club", said Davies. "However, having enjoyed a great decision there was no way I could quit. Our achievements this season far outweighed last year's championship victory and I want to bring a third championship in three seasons to this great club. It's our chance for a little bit of history. No club has won this trophy for three years on the bounce, we'll be doing our best to bring it about. " New assistant manager Mike Street backed Davies' decision to stay. "I am glad that he has decided to stay. He gets the flak if we lose so he should get the praise if we win. How many managers across the world have a win/loss ratio like his? Not many, I can tell you that. I am looking forward to forging a deeper working relationship with him in my new role." AWARDS ANNOUNCED 01/06/04 Emmanuel
Cardiff's awards were announced for the 2003/04 season at the official
club meal this evening. As well as awards many announcements were made
about playing staff and the management team.
As expected Steve Lewis, pictured left, won the player of the season, but it was a close run thing with Dave Lansdown and Owen Davies pushing him all the way. Elwyn Davies was awarded the golden boot for being top scorer, whilst new signing Andrew Woolley received an award for the best goal with his wonder free-kick against NCC being voted the best Emmanuel goal this season. Manager Gareth Davies also announced that Woolley would be his captain next season and that Simon Johns would be stepping down as assistant manager with Mike Street filling the void. Davies also announced his first new signing of the summer with James Hughes signing from Butetown. All the rest of the news and pictures of tonight's event will be on the website tomorrow. |
