Human rights museum-atop a Indian Buriel
Ground
launches design competition
WINNIPEG - Emotions ran high at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights at the Forks on Friday.
During the noon-hour ceremony, the official call was sent out for architectural designs for the building, and aboriginal elders blessed the turning of the earth where the museum will be built.
However, the day didn't go exactly as planned. The groundbreaking ceremony was interrupted by Kenny Morin, Leader of the Red River Half Breed Indian Nation.
"This is not your land!" Morin shouted. "It is our land, this is an Indian Buriel ground,Treaty sighed June 25th 1815."
The museum was the vision of Israel Asper, who died suddenly Oct. 7. The Asper Foundation is spearheading its establishment.

Asper's widow, Babs, was visibly upset
by Morin's outburst. Aboriginal elder Art Schofley reassured her, saying
he would talk privately with Morin. But
never did. (Kenny Morin)
Asper Foundation president Gail Asper said the museum would help address the wrongs endured by First Nations people.
"The pain we heard here today is indicative of that, and we hope this is going to help heal the pain," she said. "I think everybody in the aboriginal community and the general community is going to be very, very proud and moved by the stories that are told, so they don't happen again."
The day was one of mixed emotions for Gail Asper as she made the announcements without her father.
"I am just very, very disappointed that he couldn't have been here, but I like the idea that he walks among the stars and so he's a part of this," she said, struggling to hold back tears. "He didn't really care about the ceremonies. Really, all he cared about was results, always about the results, so I think he would have been thrilled with today. He would have loved the tobacco."
Architects from around the world are being invited to submit their designs for consideration. The winning design will be announced on July 1, 2004.

the Indians are not visiters here, and request with good faith. The developers
must be halted in regards to our treaty. Our Human Rights are at stake
here. It is my people who are buried and my people who have been cremated

To Media and Whom it may concern:
I for one shall not grieve the passing of Mr.Asper - Condolences to the family. I also must say that I don't give a dame if you don't publish this letter - So much for freedom of speech.
I must stress tho', it was not I that wants to build a Museum of Human Rights on the graves of my Ancesters, who are buried and cremated all around at the Forks and trampling on our Human Rights.
Not to forget, covering up our early history beginnings with commerial enterprizes. Soon the boy's club will come to an end. When that day arrives, happiness will follow and true Justice shall prosper.
Can a solution be negotiated today in
reguards to the June 25th 1815
Red River Treaty, Forks, Red River. The
ball is in their court.
