WVBS Pitches A Wang Dang Doodle For Muddy Waters
The West Virginia Blues Society (WVBS) and Blues Revue magazine are celebrating the birthday of McKinley Morganfield, a.k.a. Muddy Waters, who many regard as the greatest blues musician of all time. Morganfield was born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi in 1915, left the Delta for Chicago in 1943, “invented electricity, and the rest is history, (so they say).” He would have turned 93 this April.
WVBS has named the event the first of their “Blues Night Out” series and it will be held Friday, April 11 at Christopher’s Banquet Center, 104 Van Kirk Drive in Fairmont, WV. This “Blues Night Out” will feature great door prizes, unique event t-shirts, a 50/50 drawing, a “Muddy Basket” raffle and of course, great blues music from The Dennis McClung Blues Band of Fairmont. Admission is $5.00 at the door; blues music will begin at 9:00pm. A special “Blues Night Out” cash buffet will also be offered.
“It’s a real celebration of a blues music icon, West Virginia style,” said Jack R. Rice, WVBS President, organizers for the event. “We’re throwing a birthday party for Muddy Waters in West Virginia, sponsored by Blues Revue, the largest blues magazine in the world, but based right here in West Virginia, and the band is West Virginia’s own Dennis McClung Blues Band. It’s going to be quite a party,” added Rice.
“This is the first of many “Blues Night(s) Out” we’re planning for around the state. More are already in the works for Wheeling, Huntington, New Martinsville, Elkins and Parkersburg so far; it’s a great way for us to introduce the WVBS to people around the state and to sign up new members for the society,” said Rice.
Funds raised by the society will help with future events such as the 2008 Appalachian Blues Challenge, Little Toby Walker Guitar Clinic and Special “Diamond Teeth Mary” McClain Memorial planned for August in Huntington.
The WVBS has set aside a block of rooms at the Days Inn/Fairmont, located 2-minutes from Christophers Banquet Center. Days Inn is offering a special reduced rate of $49, but reservations must be made by March 28th. Call the Days Inn at 304-366-5995 and mention the WV Blues Society to receive the special discount rate.
