The Lavender Plant

Lavender is fast becoming the most popular of all the aromatic plants. It is easy to grow, only asking good drainage and full sun. Many of the different varieties of lavender are also frost proof.

Lavender has a wide range of uses today. You can find it in perfumes and scent pillows, soap, cosmetics and body powders to mention just a few.

Its popularity might root in old times, when lavender was burned to please the Gods and chase away diseases and "bad spirits". It has also been used to disinfect hospitals and sick patient rooms since the times of ancient Persia, Greece and Rome. Lavender was probably first brought to england by the Romans.

Medically it is only used externally. It induces sleep and has a soothing, calming aroma aswell as a few drops of its essential oil allieviating burns and insect bites.

In South of France, where Lavender originates, farmers still take a few drops of Lavender and burn it on the stove top to expell the memory of an unpleasant visitor.
