Club Valencia was adjudged as the number one (over all best) team in 2001 by the Maldivian soccer governing body FAM. Valencia had the privilege to play in all the final matches this year. Victory Sports Club claimed the second spot while the newly incepted Island Football Club (IFC) got the third position. New Radiant Sports Club, which had numerous traumas this season, plummeted to the bottom (among the top four) and Club Eagles was not even among the top 20's. Eagles, considered as a real threat for the big giants, ranked at 25. Bottom club was Phoenix, who got - 4.39 points.

Football Association of Maldives (FAM) decided to rank the clubs from 2001 onwards according to FIFA rules and regulations. They give points for the number of wins, draws, defeats and etc, depending on the strength of the club. For instance, if a second division club pummels a first division club, the winner earns higher points and the looser will be deducted by a larger margin.
