Day Five!

10:15pm the 27th of June 2004

This morning like any other morning at this trip we woke up at 6am, which is actually a lie because it was 6am after I had woken up, had had a horrible shower downstairs and talked a lot to myself, as Anne probably wasn’t listening.

We blame the early mornings on the hour difference between Norway and the UK, doing lots of stuff during the day, so therefore going to sleep early and Bob the builder. Okay so the last one I just added because I couldn’t think of any more reasons.

Even if today was Sunday, the shops were open! This is a lovely thing if you’re on holiday, but I wouldn’t want it to happen back home, as I like having the Sunday off with everyone having nothing to do, ehh almost everyone, I figure ministers and priests and such must be fairly busy on Sundays, but they’ve got Mondays off, so whatever.

We (Anne and myself) once more visited the cool store we found some days ago, because Anne wanted a t-shirt that read “I’m not normal”, and I’m still on my search for sweaters/jumpers because it’s too cold most of the year to wear all the tops I’ve bought anyway.

We went around in various stores a bit before I had to leave for the railroad station.
(To the right: the ceiling of York railroad station for the randomness of it.)

I was very early there, because I had thought it would take me 40 minutes to get there from the other part of town, and it only took me 10.

(York railroad station)

It wasn’t too bad to wait, though; I got to see a bearded lady! It looked sort of spooky with an old lady having so much beard growth.

I hadn’t heard from Seran and apparently she hadn’t heard from me either because, as we later found out, both of us had some numbers in the cell phone numbers wrong.

So I paid some attention to the speaker messages, which I’ve rarely done lately, as they don’t make any sense in this country anyway. So I went to one of the platforms that had a train that was supposed to come from London at 12:36-ish. It took me some time before I noticed them, or at least I thought it might be them, as one of them looked slightly alike Seran in her photos, and there were two of them (she was having a friend (daughter of someone her mum works with?) over from France, who also came along).

A short while later I met them at one of the bridges on the rain road station, and said hello, but as both of them looked strangely at me and didn’t answer, I was sure I’d met the wrong people, and left to look some more after them as I didn’t want to embarrass myself more. I didn’t find any though, so after some time I decided to head back and see if they were at the other end of the station instead.

As I walked past the information desk, the girl who looked like Seran was standing there and had apparently gotten them to say over the speaker system where they were and such. You probably haven’t guessed it yet but it turned out that the Seran-lookalike actually was Seran! Wow, I know! =P

Apparently she hadn’t recognized me because of my hair was a different way, something like that… Oh well, I found her.

Not long after I got to meet Axelle (pronounced like the Norwegian boys’ name Aksel), who’s staying at Seran’s house these days, comes from France, is about 6 years older than me and nice.

We walked into the centre of York, with a stop at the hotel/hostel. Wandered around in York for a while looking at various things, among these an amusing street artist who got a Swedish man and an American one to put him into a straight jacket and tie him with solid chains. And then he broke free again. He certainly knew how to entertain, it was clear that he enjoyed what he did, lucky man.

We were at this cool craft’s store, I really should start doing art again, I did miss it when I saw all the fancy things you could make things with. Seran got this thing she could pain on, so now she better take a photo of it when she’s done, so I can see, because it looked pretty =)

(Axelle and the Seran!! *squeee for Placebo t-shirt*) (Seran and me)

We had something to drink at a restaurant in order to use the bathroom and to be able to smoke indoors (okay, so Axelle was the one smoking).

The cathedral made an awful lot of noise today, but we had a glimpse inside it anyway, just not far enough so we’d have to pay. It is not right having to pay to visit a church, I tell you!

(The cathedral from the inside, as far as we could get)

We had a walk on the city walls. Yup, third time I’ve done that now in less than a week! It is kind of cool though, as the walls are the kind of walls you’d find in computer games and stuff and now you’re suddenly on one! Plus there are great views of the cathedral from it.

Of course it started raining, even if it otherwise was a lovely day with sun (I got a reddish tan), head and blue sky. We sought dryness in one of York’s three Pizza Huts. Tasty pizza and good company!

As the shops were closed by the time we were done there, we went back to the hostel/hotel, they briefly met Anne, before we went down and watched some people running on TV. This one woman was incredible (poor thing, it looked so painful), very good at running! I can’t remember her name though.

(The Seran!) (Axelle)
(And the cards. Wow...Ø.Ø)

We played some cards, I learned how to play Rummy, and we also played Svarte-Per, without the whole deal about the person losing having to get their nose coloured black…

(Axelle and Seran!) (The same) (Me and Seran)

I went with them back to the railroad station, where they after some time left. Pity they had to go, but it was a great day, and I hope they’ll come to Norway some time as well, although I doubt I’ll ever meet Axelle again, hopefully Seran’ll take a trip over to look at the umm… wooden houses!

On my way back from the railroad station I smiled at everyone I met, which was fun, as some people didn’t notice, others looked confused and didn’t smile back while most smiled, nodded or said “Hiya” to me. Okay, so only one person spoke to me, but hey, it was very nice anyway.
(Just some photo of York)

Back at the room again, Anne forced me to pack my suitcase and bag so she could see how many of her –close to 30- new books she could make me carry around. We have to go buy an extra bag for the journey home tomorrow!
