Day Two!

10:05pm, Thursday the 24th of June, 04.

We found out who the other Norwegians were. They’re a school janissary band from Finnøy, an island north of Stavanger(but still in Rogaland county). In Anne’s opinion they’re not very good, as we saw them come marching up the street in their uniforms and all, and they looked like a group of sheep just happening to walk together. But of course, she has to say that, she’s a band groupie of my band =D

At this hour I can say that some of them, although few, are aware of the fact that there are other Norwegians here. I do my best to make sure they know I’m Norwegian, by answering their English with Norwegian. I don’t like it much when they go on assuming I’m English and wont understand what they’re saying anyway. I understand too well what they’re saying.

By now, after two days, I have spent ca. half of my money. And I’ve still got 4 days to go! But on the other hand, since I’ve already bought so much, what more could I possibly waste more money on?

(To the left: me testing out clothes in a dressing room, and no, I did not end up buying that top.(If you see the arm band at my hand, it's from being in the Norwegian National championship contest for school brass bands a few days before the trip to York.)

Clothes! Loads and loads of clothes, books and other stuff, sigh, there’s just too much cool stuff here! Although things seem expensive when you have to multiply it with 13 whenever you want to know how much money you’re really spending on it.

I bought 3 new books today, Anne’s soon at 20, I figure, even if she refuse to take the time off from the reading to try and give me a circa number. I have spent A LOT of money today, but Anne’s spent more, so that helps =)
(Another successful visit to the bookshop)

I’ve bought a pair of jeans, three tops, two of which I just had to get as it was at FCUK (French Connection United Kingdom), an umbrella at the same place (FCUK Rain), make up, soap, socks, underwear, postcards, gifts for some family members, a hair clip thingy, and food.

As we didn’t make it to the shops in time last night, we ended up, somehow with eating breakfast at a café at Marks and Spencers. Breakfast is a strange term for it, I guess. While Anne had some weird looking sandwiches, strawberry milk and a scones, apparently(which I too had, and they taste the exact same as Norwegian ‘Jødekaker’ only they were buns instead of flat cookies, and rather strange so early in the morning.) I had a chocolate chip muffin, something I’d never eat for breakfast, and an apple juice, that was highly popular among children, according to its can. I can’t quite understand that as I thought it very bitter, and Anne thought it seemed like Eplemost, which tastes crap in my opinion. (Anne's breakfast to the left, mine to the right)

All in all it was a pretty expensive breakfast for something I only complain about. The chocolate chips on the muffin were great. See, I found a positive thing!

We had planned to go see the cathedral this day, and yes we had been aware of the fact that we would have to pay to get in, but £4,50?? 58,50kr to see the insides of a church? I’ll come back some day when I’m rich. Even the great dome in Cologne had free entrance. Jeez.

The bad part about this was that it could have been nice having been there. The outside looks lovely, very pretty, if that helps.

At lunchtime, which seems to be at 12-1pm instead of 10:30-12-ish am, we went to a Cornish pasty bakery to buy some of that stuff. It was very strange, why bake an entire meal into a dough? Okay, it doesn’t sound too bad, but they had mixed some truly disgusting things. I think I was fairly lucky with mine, as it didn’t taste too bad, actually, just very strange. Anne had worse luck with hers (Yuck, is what I say).

By waking up early in the morning to make the most of the day, we were exhausted by 2pm, and it felt like the clock was 8pm(not even 3pm as it is in Norway).
(Just a random photo of the floor in our room, to prove that we had shopped quite a lot after only two days.)

I’ve gotten to know the town much better, even Anne’s still the one knowing where we are and where we’re headed at most times, I’m starting to understand where things are and how to get to places.

Which really tells you just how small a town it is, no? As it’s still just our second day here, I mean.

My English is rubbish. People talk too quickly and I’m used to written English, so I have to ask several times before I get what they’re saying. I look pretty silly by then, but I realized that agreeing to everything I didn’t understand, wasn’t such a good idea either, as I ended up with keeping two clothing racks I thought for some unreasonable reason she(the shop lady) asked if I wanted hid. Keep, hid, there’s two similar words, right?!

At Pizza Hut earlier we ended up with tuna on the pizza because the pizza guy didn’t understand Anne’s way of saying tomato. I thought I was going to be sick when I found out what the strange turkey/chicken was… We got a new pizza though, with tomato instead of tuna, phew! Who the hell wants tuna on their pizza anyway???

We went around at 5pm looking for a pub, because Anne had read somewhere that the EM football match between England and “???” was starting at 5pm, and we wanted to see some of it.

Of course it didn’t begin before 8pm-ish and then we had been standing at a pub since 7pm, while watching the pub getting more and more customers. It was quite nice though, even if we felt somewhat like intruders.

It turned out, after plenty music videos of just every football song England’s ever had, that the other team was Portugal, who’s hosting the European championship contest this year.

I had a coke and felt out of place as everyone else were having beers, but they were spilling half of it on the floor anyway, so I guess it doesn’t matter much. A man offered me a beer, but I took it as a joke, as I wasn’t sure what he meant, due to not being able to understand most of what they’re saying when they’re talking fast.

I realized that we hear close to nothing of this sort of British accents in English class, a shame, as it sounds awesome (when they just slow down a bit).

Being at the pub during a football match like this was great, the place was full, and as long as you cheered for England and didn’t stand in the way when they were getting themselves beer, you were accepted. Anne kept complaining about the heavy smoking though. Pyse! (j/k). England’s Michael Owen scored a goal very early in the match, and we left the pub some time after that, due to Anne’s problems with the smoke.

The last I saw from the match it was 1-1, but I’m not sure how it ended, I think England might have won, as there was loud singing outside not too long ago.

(The wonderful view from our window.)
