The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for this Saturday. The playground has been in the works for over ten years. The $167,000 project was finally approved by the Encinitas City Council in August. (12/29) Surfrider Wins CA Environmental Award Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presented the Surfrider Foundation an Environmental Leadership award earlier this month at an awards ceremony in Sacramento. The prestigious award was given to Surfrider for educating California's children about coastal environmentalism and the ocean. Surfrider's Respect the Beach program promotes respect for our beaches using a variety of student field trips, classroom learning, and hands-on projects. (12/28) Agua Hedionda Center May Open this Year A nature center at Agua Hedionda Lagoon could be open as early as this spring. A 3,800 square foot Spanish-style building was donated in 1999 to create the Discovery Center, but the project has stalled as the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation searches for money to complete the project. The parking lot around the Nature Center has now been completed and landscaping is planned for this spring. The Center will provide information and exhibits related to the lagoon and it surrounding environment. It is located at Cannon Road and Faraday Avenue in Carlsbad. (12/26) Tijuana Sewage Causes I.B. Pollution Alert A pollution alert has been issued by the San Diego Department of Environmental Health for the coast of Imperial Beach south of the end of Seacoast Drive. The recent rains have created too much runoff that the sewage plant at the Tijuana River cannot handle. There was already a general pollution advisory in the area due to the rains that often cause contaminated runoff from creeks and city drainage systems. (12/25) Cities Buy Land Above Batiquitos Lagoon Encinitas and Carlsbad officials are planning a 51.7 acre purchase of land above Batiquitos Lagoon near La Costa Avenue. The Encinitas City Council unanimously approved the purchase earlier this month. The purchased land would be off limits to development, which would help maintain native wildlife and plants and help water quality in the lagoon and nearby Ponto beach. (12/23) Neither El Nino nor La Nina in 2004 A number of weather agencies are predicting that 2004 will bring neither an El Nino nor a La Nina weather pattern. El Nino occurs when warm ocean surface water covers much of the Pacific, which leads to heavy storms and waves in North and South American and droughts in the South Pacific. La Nina occurs when unusually cold water is present in the Pacific, which often leads to extra rain and flooding in Europe and inland North America. But current indicators point to 2004 being a typical year, with neither extreme condition occurring. (12/22) Surfrider San Diego Accused of Extortion The Surfrider Foundation was accused of extortion by Oceanside City Councilman Rocky Chavez. Chavez was referring to a comment by San Diego Surfrider Chairman Marco Gonzalez regarding the proposed hotel and resort being considered for construction near Oceanside Pier. Gonzalez said last week at a city council meeting that unless Oceanside gave in to Surfrider's demands, he would appeal the hotel project and would show up with bus loads of people against the project at an upcoming California Coastal Commission's hearing. Surfrider is still considering whether or not to appeal the city council's approval of the project. (12/19) Andy Irons Wins 2003 World Title Andy Irons won the 2003 WCT title by winning the Pipeline Masters yesterday. Kelly Slater and Irons reached the final heat and the title would go to whoever finished higher in the heat. Slater had two early average scores and had the lead halfway through the heat, but never found a top wave to work with. Irons scored a 6.83 ride with about seven minutes left to add to an earlier 8.33 ride and take the lead for good. Australians Joel Parkinson and Philip MacDonald took 2nd and 3rd in the event, with Slater fading to 4th. Carlsbad's Taylor Knox ended the year ranked 7th in the world. (12/18) Ground Broken on Solana Beach Rail Trail A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Solana Beach early this week to begin construction of that city's section of the coastal rail path. The 1.7 mile Solana Beach segment will run along the west side of railroad tracks and the east side of Highway 101. Construction of this segment is expected to be completed by the end of this coming summer. The overall plan is to build a walking and biking trail along the entire coastline from Oceanside to San Diego, with at least 10 miles of the path next to the railroad tracks along the coast in North County. Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Encinitas are in the planning and approval phases of their segments. (12/16) California Approves Ponto Sand Dumping The California Department of Parks and Recreation has approved a plan to dump about 50,000 cubic yards of sand at Ponto beach. The sand will come from the construction site of a large hotel being built along the bluffs above the south end of Ponto. The city of Encinitas successfully convinced state officials that the material to be taken from the ground at the hotel construction site would match the sand currently at Ponto beach. (12/14) Machado and Knox Eliminated at Pipeline Cardiff's Rob Machado and Carlsbad's Taylor Knox have been eliminated from the Pipeline Masters, the final event of the 2003 ASP World Tour. The semi-retired Machado was eliminated during the trials, one heat away from making the main event. Knox, who was ranked 7th in the world going into the contest, was eliminated in the 2nd round of the main event. Both Kelly Slater and Andy Irons, who are neck and neck for the championship, both advanced to round three at Pipeline. (12/13) Beachley Wins Sixth ASP World Title Australian Layne Beachley won the 2003 ASP Women's World Title for a record 6th straight year. It was a close championship race and Beachley was not assured of the title until Hawaiian Keala Kennelly lost her semi-final heat against Samantha Cornish at the Billabong Pro Maui. Cornish beat Kennelly and then went on to defeat Beachley in the final to win the event. Beachley is tied with Kelly Slater for the most surfing world championships. (12/11) Machado is Holiday Bowl Grand Marshal Cardiff's Rob Machado will be the Grand Marshal of this year's Holiday Bowl parade. Machado will ride along with the many huge balloon figures and national marching bands during the parade on December 30th and will also participate in the Holiday Bowl's pre-game coin toss. Machado, who is semi-retired from pro surfing now, has been ranked 2nd in the world and won the 2000 Pipeline Masters. This week he is competing in the 2003 Pipeline Masters in Hawaii. (12/9) San Diegans Win at WRSA Salt Creek Five San Diego County surfers won their divisions at the Western Region Surfing Association (WRSA) Championship Tour contest at Salt Creek over the weekend in large 8-foot surf. Bryson Greaves of San Diego won the Men's Division, Niles Brilhart of Oceanside won the Boy's Division, Rat Battisti of Encinitas won the Senior Men's Division, Terry Gillard of Coronado won the Men's Longboard Division, and Lelit Stephens of Encinitas won the Open Women's Division. (12/6) Paterson Wins WCT Rip Curl Cup Australian Jake Paterson defeated Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, and Taj Burrow yesterday to win the Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach in Hawaii in great 8-10 foot surf. It was Paterson's 4th career WCT victory and first WCT final of this season. Irons second place finish means he is only 96 points behind ratings leaders Kelly Slater. Only Slater and Irons are now in contention to win the 2003 WCT title, with whoever goes further in the season-ending Pipeline Masters taking the title. Carlsbad's Taylor Knox is ranked 7th in the world after being narrowly eliminated in the 4th round. (12/4) Knox is Top Scorer at Rip Curl Cup Taylor Knox had the top combined score of round two at the Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach in Hawaii. His two barrels added up to a combined score of 17.6, allowing him to defeat Beau Emerton, Shane Powell and local Hawaiian Love Hodel and advance to the next round. Knox will face Australians Mick Campbell, Dean Morrison, and Luke Hitchings in round three. (12/3) Solana Beach Okays Short-Term Rentals The Solana Beach City County unanimously voted last night to continue to allow one-week rentals along the beach, but established heavy fines for landlords who allow renters to be loud and bothersome to neighbors. Landlords who allow raucous renters could face fines of $500 for the first violation and $1,000 for the second violation. Some home owners along the bluffs in Solana Beach had asked the city council to extend the minimum rental period to 15 days.
