Now Playing: #6 - The Sorrow and the Pity (1969)
Topic: Movies
Le Chagrin et la pitié (1969) Directed by Marcel Ophüls also known as The Sorrow and the Pity, may be the greatest documentary film ever made. With over 4 hours of interviews from people who fought in the war (WWII) and experienced the occupation of France combined with some old wartime footage and archive footage clips of Maurice Chevalier, René Bousquet, Jacques Doriot, Pierre Laval, Philippe Pétain and Charles de Gaulle. The film is long but definately worth watching, especially if you have an interest in World War II. You may or may not learn anything new from this film, depending on how much you know about World War II and the occupation of France but it is always nice to see a different perspective on the subject.

Now Playing: #5 - Ed Wood (1994)
Topic: Movies
Ed Wood (1994) Directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Jeffrey Jones and Bill Murray.

Ed Wood is the mostly true story of the legendary filmmaker of such bad movies as Glen or Glenda (1953), Bride of the Monster (1955) and Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) The story revolves around Edward D. Wood, Jr. and his passion for making films, his strange group of friends and the actors that he worked with. The movie Ed Wood shows a fictionalized account of the production of some of Ed Woods films with the main focus being Plan 9 From Outer Space. Johnny Depp gives a great performance as Ed Wood and Martin Landau gives a wonderful performance as Bela Lugosi for which he won the Oscar for best supporting actor.

I love this movie and would recommend it. It's a must see, especially if you've seen Plan 9 From Outer Space.

Now Playing: #4 - Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)
Topic: Movies
Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) directed by Edward D. Wood Jr., starring Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Duke Moore, Tom Keene, Tor Johnson and almost starring Bela Lugosi.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is Ed Wood's masterpiece. From the time the movie opens with the wonderful monologue of Criswell "Greetings, my friends. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember, my friends, future events such as these will affect you in the future." it is made clear that the events depicted in this film take place in the future. By the end of the movie, Criswell sets the movie in the past by saying, "My friend, you have seen this incident, based on sworn testimony. Can you prove that it didn't happen?"

The film is about a group of Aliens who come to save mankind from their own self detructive behavior. Apparently their first 8 plans to get mankinds attention didn't work because now they've decided to use plan 9, which involves raising the dead. The plan is to resurrect the dead and make an army to march on the capitals of the world.

This film provides plenty of unintentional laughs due to the bad acting, bad dialogue and bad sets. Some things to watch for. Tombstones sway and fall over as people ease by, policeman, who are supposed to be well trained point their guns at themselves while talking to someone. Bela Lugosi died four days after shooting began, he was replaced by Tom Mason who was taller and kept his face covered with his cape.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is internationally recognized as the worst movie ever made and was the winner of the Golden Turkey Award for worst film of all time. Everyone should see this film at least once.

Criswell: "Perhaps, on your way home, someone will pass you in the dark, and you will never know it... for they will be from outer space."

Now Playing: #3 - The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
Topic: Movies
The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) directed by Roger Korman, starring Jonathan Haze, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles and an appearance by Jack Nicholson.

The Little Shop of Horrors is a fun movie to watch, it is a very good classic horror/comedy which has become a cult classic.

Seymour Krelboin (Haze) works at a small flower shop on Skid Row, when he is in danger of losing his job, he discovers that the new plant that he just bought from a street vendor is no ordinary plant. With the prospect of drawing more customers in to see this new plant, his boss, Gravis Mushnik (Welles) decides to let him keep his job with a pay increase. Now that he has this plant, everything seems to be perfect for Seymour, he has his job, a raise, his girlfriend, Audry (Joseph) but things take a turn for the worse when he finds out what it takes to keep his plant alive.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes old cult films. The movie is extremely fun to watch.

Now Playing: #2 - Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
Topic: Movies
Night of the Living Dead (1968) directed by George A. Romero, starring Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman, Keith Wayne and Judith Ridley.

Night of the Living Dead is one of the finest zombie horror films ever made. A group of people trying to escape the living dead zombies wind up in a house together with no way out. Zombies are everywhere, outside the zombies are trying to break in, while inside the house these people who have never met before must work together in order to survive. Tempers flare and emotions run wild inside the house while outside the zombies are more determined than ever to get inside. I would recommend this film to any horror movie fan. It's a must see.

Now Playing: #1 - Dogville (2003)
Topic: Movies
Dogville (2003) Directed by Lars von Trier, starring Nicole Kidman, Lauren Bacall, Paul Bettany and James Caan.

I really enjoyed this movie.

The story is that a woman, Grace played by Nicole Kidman is on the run from the mob. She winds up in a very small town in Colorado and the townspeople reluctantly accept her. Soon a search reaches the small town of Dogville and the townspeople decide to hide Grace instead of giving her up and she agrees to work for the townspeople to pay for their hospitality but as time goes on and the search continues for Grace, She finds that the price for their support may just be too much. She has a secret that just might destroy Dogville forever.

This movie doesn't appeal to everyone but I found it to be a very enjoyable film and as the story went on, I found myself getting pulled in by it and although it is a rather long movie, 2 hours 57 minutes, I just couldn't turn it off. The set is very different from any other movie set too, The houses have no walls or doors, although you will see a free standing door or wall from time to time. The bushes are drawn on the ground with chalk and the actors mime certain activities such as raking and knocking on doors.
