(unfilmed shooting script)
Jonathan D. Steinhoff, December 2000
1. FADE IN. [ls-sky-mcu,1/2pr,J.] A cloudless sky, so that blue is all that is seen. Suddenly we hear the sound of the glitch (as heard in “Gosk-Part II”). The same framing is suddenly occupied by something in the foreground: Jerp, who is still doing the same thing as when last seen at the end of “Gosk-Part II”, i.e., nodding his head and grinning towards where he expects Clerp to be. Jerp’s nose is no longer blue. Jerp’s grin fades, and a moment later he stops nodding his head. Jerp appears mildly perplexed. Jerp shifts his head, apparently seeing something in particular in the distance. [ms,J.] Jerp begins looking around. [mls,J.(from behind)] We now see that Jerp is sitting alone in a rowboat in the middle of a lake. Jerp looks around with more abrupt head movements (the words “The Planet Klug” momentarily appear at the bottom of the screen) [cutaways to nearby scenery]. [mcu,3/4pr,J.] Jerp stops, then looks down to contemplate. Jerp’s expression of seriousness evaporates, and, still looking down, he smiles. Jerp stops smiling, lifts his head and looks straight ahead, which makes him appear similar to when he was watching the spaceship monitor. Suddenly we hear the sound of the glitch again. Jerp shifts his attention slightly to the left, as a huge smile comes to his face. [,mcu,C.] Clerp is seen against a blue background, covering his face in his hands while shaking his head, as when last seen at the end of “Gosk-Part II”. Clerp stops shaking his head as if he has detected something, and slowly removes his hands from his face. Clerp’s nose also is no longer blue. What Clerp sees gives him pause. [2-shot,C.,J.(mcu,C.,ms,J.)] We see that Clerp is sitting in front of Jerp in the rowboat, positioned such that he and Jerp are facing in the same direction. Jerp, who is looking at the back of Clerp’s head, continues to smile. As Clerp takes in his environment, he eventually [mcu,1/2pr.,C.] turns around, at which point he notices [mcu,C.] [mcu,J.] Jerp smiling.
CLERP [mcu,C.] (with a serious expression on his face): “Jerp!”
JERP [mcu,J.] (smiling): “Clerp!”
[2-shot,1/2pr,C.,J.] Clerp grins, and after a pregnant pause, he and Jerp nod their heads. [mcu,C.] Clerp stops grinning and nodding.
CLERP: “Your nose isn’t blue anymore.”
JERP: “Neither is yours.”
CLERP: “I almost didn’t recognize you without your blue nose.” [cu,J.] (Jerp appears confused, than smiles. [cu,C.] Clerp is grinning.)
JERP: “Very funny!” (Clerp resumes looking around, becoming serious.) [mcu, full face,C.-mcu,from behind,C.] Clerp turns back around [2-shot,C.,J.] to look around, so that both are facing forward. Jerp is watching Clerp. Clerp stops looking around and just looks straight ahead, which Jerp does as well. [ls,boat,lake,C.J.] Clerp and Jerp sit in silence for a few moments. [2-shot,C.,J.] After a few more moments a conversation occurs, wherein neither Clerp nor Jerp divert their attention from looking straight ahead.
JERP: “Clerp?”
CLERP (with a slightly delayed response): “Yeah?”
JERP: “Clerp… I really like it here, but - do you know where we are?”
CLERP (once again with a delayed response): “No.” (Jerp shakes his head, [ms,J.] while breaking into a smile and tilting his head downward.) [mcu,3/4pr,C.] (solemnly) “I do know one thing.”
JERP [mcu,J.] (lifting his head and still smiling): “What’s that?”
CLERP (with a slightly delayed response): “The glitch sent us here.” (Jerp’s smile turns into a look of concern.) [2-shot,C.,J.] “I really wish I could - if I could just locate the source of the glitch.” [mcu,J.] (Jerp nods his head twice in solemn agreement.) FADE OUT.
FADE IN. [cu,C.] Clerp and [cu,J.] Jerp are napping in the rowboat, their faces wet and their heads tilted down, with water splashing on them. The sound of young women giggling is heard. [2-shot,M.,R.] Two Earth girls, Michelle and Roxanne, an inflatable raft between them, are each leaning on the inflatable raft with one arm and splashing water on Clerp and Jerp with the other. Michelle and Roxanne are giggling with delight. [cu,M.] [cu,R.] A few moments later [mcu,C.] Clerp and [mcu,J.] Jerp awaken. [2-shot,full face,M.,R.-2-shot,1/2pr,M.,R.] Michelle and Roxanne stop splashing, shift from looking towards Clerp and Jerp to looking at each other, and assume expressions of make believe suspense. [ms,M.] Michelle and [ms,R.] Roxanne hold their expressions of make believe suspense a moment, then burst out laughing. [4-shot,C.,J.,M.,R.(favoring C.,J.)] Clerp and Jerp, who look like they’ve just been woken up, are looking at Michelle and Roxanne. Roxanne turns to look at Clerp and Jerp, as does Michelle a moment later. {When Michelle and Roxanne speak it is with Long Island accents, and they constantly chew gum (unless otherwise indicated)}.
ROXANNE [ms,R.]: “You guys are so strange looking!” (Roxanne smiles mischievously.) [mcu, full face,M.-mcu,1/2pr,M.-mcu,full face,M.] (Michelle turns from Clerp and Jerp to Roxanne and gives her a stern look.)
MICHELLE: “Please figgive the rude behaveeyor” (Michelle turns back towards Clerp and Jerp) “of my friend.” (Michelle pauses, [ms,R.] while Roxanne is visibly embarrassed, looking down at the water.) “Allow me” [cu,M.] “to introduce us. My name is Michelle, and my friend’s name is Roxanne.” [mcu,R.] (Roxanne quickly gets over her embarrassment, and smiles towards Clerp and Jerp.
CLERP [2-shot,C.,J.]: “I’m Clerp and he’s Jerp.” [2-shot,high angle,M.,R.] (Michelle and Roxanne appear not to understand.)
ROXANNE: “Cloip and Joip?”
CLERP [mcu,C.] (proudly): “We are the Mars Zuns, the Streetgang from Mars.” (after a brief silence) “ We’re from Mars.” [mcu,J.] (Jerp begins smiling.)
MICHELLE [2-shot,M.,R.]: “Oh.”
ROXANNE: “From Mozz? You’re Moshins?”
CLERP [ms,C.]: “Not Moshins, Mars Zuns.”
ROXANNE [mcu,R.]: “Mozzuns.” (Roxanne smiles.)
CLERP [cu,C.]: “No. We’re not Mozzins, we’re Mars Zuns.”
MICHELLE (2-shot,M.,R.] (looking at Roxanne): “I’d give up, Cloip. That’s as close as she’s gonna come.” [mcu,J.] (Jerp is still smiling.)
ROXANNE [mcu,C.]: “Hey, so now if you’re from Mozz, [2-shot,M.,R.] what are you doing all the way over here on Oith?” (There is a pause.) [2-shot,C.,J.] (Clerp and Jerp look at each other. Clerp is somewhat serious and Jerp is still smiling.)
CLERP [mcu,1/2pr,C.-mcu,full face,C.] (looking towards Jerp): “We…. don’t exactly know.” (Clerp looks towards Roxanne and Michelle. [mcu,1/2pr,J.-mcu,full face,J.] Jerp’s smile abruptly vanishes. He looks towards Michelle and Roxanne, somewhat serious. [2-shot,full face,M.,R.-2-shot,1/2pr,M.,R.] Roxanne and Michelle look at each other and smile.) [mcu,C.] “Are you sure this is Earth?” [2-shot,1/2,M.,R.] (Roxanne and Michelle laugh.)
MICHELLE [ms,3/4pr,M.-ms,1/2,M.] (turning towards Clerp): “Hey Cloip, could you hold my gum please?”
ROXANNE [ms,R.] (to Jerp): “Joip, could you hold my gum?”
JERP [2-shot,C.,J.] (Jerp and Clerp begin to smile but don’t understand the question): “Hold your…. what?”
CLERP: “Your what?”
MICHELLE [mcu,3/4,M.-mcu,1/2pr,M.] (smiling while rolling her eyes): “Oh, nevahmind.”
Michelle, still smiling, looks towards Roxanne [ms,1/2pr,R.], who, smiling, is looking towards Michelle. [2-shot,C.,J.] Clerp and Jerp are still smiling at Michelle and Roxanne. [2-shot,1/2pr,M.,R.] Michelle and Roxanne, still looking at eachother, in a synchronized rhythm, take the gum out of their mouths, poise their gum over the water, and [cu,gum, water] [cu,gum, water] drop their gum into the water. [cu,M.] Michelle and [cu,R.] Roxanne smile at each other, [2-shot,M.,R.] laugh again, and immerse themselves underwater. [2-shot,C.,J.] Clerp and Jerp, with anticipation ,[mls] watch the inflatable raft and the area in the water where Michelle and Roxanne had been seen a moment earlier. [mcu,M.] Michelle and [mcu,R.] Roxanne resurface momentarily. [2-shot,M.,R.] Roxanne points towards the rowboat and then the shore, and Michelle nods her head and points towards the shore. Michelle and Roxanne swim their inflatable raft to the rowboat and put it into the rowboat, immerse themselves underwater, swim to the bow of the rowboat, [cu,M.] [cu,R] grab hold of the rope in the water tied to the bow of the rowboat, [2-shot,M.,R.] immerse themselves immediately beneath the surface of the water, and start swimming the rowboat towards shore. [mcu, pan,J.] Jerp and [mcu, pan,C.] Clerp, each leaning a little over a side of the rowboat in an attempt to see the underwater images of Michelle and Roxanne, seem immensely pleased. [cu] The rope leading from the bow of the rowboat into the water is taut. [2-shot,C.,J.] Clerp and Jerp settle back down to looking straight ahead, smiles on their faces. [ms,3/4pr,C.] After a few moments Clerp becomes slightly serious, and looks around at the scenery. Clerp then resumes just looking straight ahead at [POV,C.] the lake and a mountain in front of him.
CLERP [2-shot,C.,J.] (speaking after a moment): “I know Michelle and Roxanne laughed when I asked if they were sure this is Earth. But I really don’t think it is. I think we’re on Klug. It looks a lot more like Klug.” (Jerp thinks a moment, then looks about him at the scenery as if searching for some specific object, occasionally looking directly behind himself with a degree of abruptness. Jerp resumes just looking straight ahead.)
JERP [vls,C.,J.,rowboat,lake] (speaking after a moment): “I think you’re right.” (after a few moments) “Hey, I really like that Roxanne. Remember when she took that thing out of her mouth and threw it into the water?”
CLERP: “So Roxanne did that too? I was watching Michelle doing that.” (brief pause) “Isn’t it great,” [mcu,C.] (Clerp is smiling) “the way they’re helping us, you know, by making this boat move?”
JERP [2-shot,C.,J.] (Clerp and Jerp are both smiling): “Yeah!”
CLERP: “I think Michelle is really pretty.”
JERP [ms,R.] (as we see the blurred image of Roxanne underwater): “So is Roxanne.”
CLERP: “I hope they don’t get angry - when they find out. You know, that they’re in our big planet switch. I mean, cause, I was thinking of asking Michelle, you know, if she would wanna go out on a date with me.”
JERP [vls,C.,J.,rowboat,lake]: “And then I’ll ask Roxanne if she wants to go out on a date with me!”
CLERP: “Yeah!”
JERP: Maybe we shouldn’t tell them, you know, about the big planet switch.”
CLERP: “Yeah.” FADE OUT.
2. FADE IN. Crowds of wandering people occupy city streets and sidewalks, represented by shots of people seen from the knees down. The image of the (toy) Mars Zun spaceship (as seen in “Gosk-Part I”) appears in the sky against a city landscape. The spaceship then lands on top of a parked (toy) Earth car, flattening it and thereby occupying its parking space (the words “The Planet Earth” momentarily appear at the bottom of the screen, over the image of the spaceship on top of the flattened car).
[mcu, pan, low angle, everyone, montage] Framed in sections of their body (feet, head, mid-section), nine Klugians are seen, Stevert, Harryert, Debbert, Gloriert, Sammert, Cynthiert, Stuert, Rogert and Billert, individually, each walking along a sidewalk, when suddenly they each, individually, stop and notice [cu] the spaceship. [mcu, low angle,H.] Harryert becomes curious, spots [cu] a common-looking door knob, turns it, causing it to make the sound of a soda can being opened, [mcu, pan, low angle,H.] and enters the spaceship without any difficulty. [cu] Everyone else then enters the spaceship, only the part of each person level with the door knob being visible as they step inside. [cu,H.] Inside the spaceship, Harryert turns his head sharply, as if he suddenly saw something with his peripheral vision that he wishes to look at directly. [H.POV,near-continuous,hand-held shot, panning, zooming (after something is zoomed in on, the camera then zooms out)] Everyone (except Harryert) is then seen exploring the spaceship interior, finding it filled with things of interest (see explanation on last page).
[ms,1/2pr,St.] Stevert sees a [ms] button in an obscure place, very high up on a wall, [mcu, pan,St.(from behind)] jumps up, and [cu,hand] pushes the button, Stevert’s hand entering and exiting the frame rapidly. The song “Desiree” by the Charts is suddenly heard faintly in the background (as in “Gosk-Part I” and “Gosk-Part II”). [ms,1/2pr,St.] Stevert walks out of frame. From this point forward, the song “Desiree” can be heard playing faintly over and over in the background throughout the scenes inside the spaceship, unless otherwise indicated. A moment after the song begins playing [ms,door] the spaceship door slams shut by itself, making the sound of a soda can being opened. [cu,St.] Stevert walks into frame and stops abruptly, puzzled by the sound. [mcu, everyone, montage] Everyone, from wherever they are, beginning with Cynthiert and ending with Harryert, turns their head to look towards the [ms,door] closed door. There is then a loud rumbling sound, accompanied by the image of the door vibrating. The song “Desiree” can only be faintly heard during the loud rumbling sound. [ms,spaceship] As the loud rumbling sound continues, the (toy) spaceship is seen flying straight up, some tall buildings in the distant background. [mcu, everyone, montage] The loud rumbling sound continues. The images of everyone vibrate. Everyone continues to look towards the door, with only slight concern. [ms,door] Suddenly the loud rumbling sound and the vibrating stop. The song “Desiree” can again be heard distinctly. [mcu, everyone, montage] Everyone, once again beginning with Cynthiert and ending with Harryert, each turns their head back, to resume whatever they were doing before they turned their heads.
[cu] The (toy) spaceship is seen flying through outerspace, the Earth in the distance (as seen in “Gosk-Part I”), as the song “Desiree” continues to be heard. [ms,spaceship window-ms, Gl.from the waist down] The spaceship window is approached by someone (Gloriert) who is only visible from the waist down. [spaceship window,Gl.(from the waist down),S.-spaceship window,2-shot,Gl.from the waist down,S.from the waist down] Stuert is nearby, bending down to look at the small George Washington portrait on the wall.
GLORIERT: “Hey, look at this.” (Stuert stands up and goes to the spaceship window, now becoming visible only from the waist down.) “I think this is that outerspace movie, ‘Two Droglugs And One, A Space Odyssey.’”
[2-shot,Gl.,S.] Stuert and Gloriert are looking out of the spaceship window. Stuert then looks from the spaceship window up towards [S.POV,cu,pan] the sign above it, which reads “Spaceship Window”, and the sign below it, which reads “This Is Not A Monitor” (as seen in “Gosk-Part I”).
STUERT [mcu,1/2pr,S.] (turning towards Gloriert): “This isn’t a movie. It’s a window.” [mcu,Gl.] (Gloriert, distinctly concerned by Stuert’s statement, continues to look towards the spaceship window.) [spaceship window,ms,S.from the waist down] (Stuert turns around, “facing” away from the spaceship window.) [mcu,1/2pr,S.] (sounding almost jubilant) “Hey everybody, come over here! I think we took off into outerspace! I think we’re in a spaceship!”
[mcu,H.] Harryert turns sharply towards Stuert. [mcu, everyone, montage] Everyone goes over towards Gloriert and Stuert, exiting their frames one by one. [spaceship window, mls, everyone from the waist down] Everyone gathers around the spaceship window. There is a perpetual murmur. The murmuring dies down.
STUERT: “See? We’re looking out of a window. This is a spaceship.” (There is a brief murmuring.)
ROGERT [mcu,Ro.](his tone reproachful): “Does anybody here know anything about this?”
[mcu,St.] During a brief silence, Stevert seems to be puzzled by something, then appears to have suddenly realized something, which brings an “Uh-oh” type expression to his face.
DEBBERT: “No.”
STUERT: “Not me.”
HARRYERT: “I don’t have any idea.”
BILLERT: “Definitely not.”
CYNTHIERT [mcu,Cy.]: “I would say that things have been pretty strange in general.” (There is a general murmur of agreement.)
HARRYERT [2-shot, Bi.,H.]: “There have been a lot of strange things.” (Billert nods his head.) [mcu,St.] (Stevert still has an “Uh-oh” expression on his face.)
DEBBERT [mcu,De.] (following a momentary silence, hesitantly, on the verge of tears, getting emotionally worked up as if she is in group therapy): “I was, I was walking down the sidewalk today, and I…. all of a sudden - I didn’t know where I was!” [mcu,Cy.] “So then - I just kept walking. Like things were normal.” [cu,De.] “Hoping no one would see, that I was lost. And afraid! I didn’t want anyone to see that I was lost and afraid!” (Debbert begins sobbing.) [spaceship window, mls, everyone from the waist down]
BILLERT (following a few moments of Debbert sobbing): “I thought-” [mcu,Bi.] “I thought it was just me! I know exactly what you mean.” (There is a general murmur from everyone of “Um hmm”.)
SAMMERT [cu,Sa.]: “It was the strangest thing.”
ROGERT: “I thought I was losing my mind.”
STUERT [cu,S.]: “I kept expecting that, any minute, I would recognize where I was, and then everything would be okay.”
SAMMERT [cu,Sa.]: “At one point, I said to myself, ‘Am I going crazy?’”
ROGERT [2-shot,Ro.,Gl.]: “Things sure didn’t look normal today.”
GLORIERT: “No they did not.” [ls,high angle, everyone] (There is a momentary silence.)
HARRYERT: “So here we are.” (There is another momentary silence.)
CYNTHIERT [2-shot,Bi.,Cy.]: “Flying through outerspace in a spaceship.”
BILLERT: “Flying around.”
SAMMERT [ms,Sa.](pointing at his T-shirt): “And look at this T-shirt I’m wearing! I don’t know where it came from! I put on a completely different T-shirt this morning! I don’t even know who it’s a picture of!”
[ls,high angle, everyone](Everyone politely murmurs in an attempt to sound like they share Sammert’s incredulity, but unable to avoid sounding indulgent and skeptical. Everyone is looking at the T-shirt, which features [cu,T-shirt] a portrait of Jonathan Swift, which was seen in “Gosk-Parts I and II” in the small picture frame on the red table, before being replaced, owing to the glitch, by the image(s) of Benjamin Franklin. [cu,red table] Suddenly the small, framed picture of Benjamin Franklin on the red table falls over, face down, making a clunking sound.)
SAMMERT [mcu,Sa.](melodramtically, as if in a ghost movie): “What was that noise?”
ROGERT [mcu,Ro.]: “You know, I’d say we were being abducted by aliens, except that we all walked in here voluntarily.” [ls,high angle, everyone] (Everyone nods their heads while exchanging looks. There is a very brief pause.)
GLORIERT [mcu,Gl.]: “Voluntarily, yes, but we certainly didn’t know at the time that it would turn out to be a spaceship.” [mcu,Ro.] (Rogert nods his head.)
STEVERT: “Actually…. [mcu,St.] (Stevert is looking down) “I think the reason this spaceship, that we’re on, uh, took off into outerspace….the thing that actually made it take off….” (Stevert looks up towards Gloriert, then looks down again.) [mcu,G] “was because of some button I pushed. I had no idea that it would, uh….” (Gloriert is looking towards Stevert, and appears to be suppressing great anger. There is a pause.) [mcu,St.] (Stevert lifts his head and looks around at everyone.) “I am really so sorry.” (As people reassure Stevert not to feel bad, he continually turns towards whoever spoke to him, smiling sheepishly and nodding.)
STUERT: “Oh that’s okay.”
SAMMERT: “You didn’t know.”
DEBBERT: “It’s not your fault.”
BILLERT: “You hit a button. How could you know this would happen?”
SAMMERT [mcu,Sa.] (smiling optimistically): “Maybe, somehow, we weren’t even on Klug in the first place. Maybe… Maybe this spaceship is flying us back to Klug! See? And, so, that’s why everything looked different, and now we’re flying back.” (There is a brief silence, Sammert retaining his smile.)
STUERT [mcu,1/2pr,S.] (not quite sounding convinced): “That would be really great.”
CYNTHIERT [2-shot,Bi.,Cy.] (also not quite sounding convinced): “Yeah.”
HARRYERT [2-shot,De.,H.] (Harryert and Debbert are smiling): “I hope so!” [mcu,Sa.] (Sammert continues to smile.)
[spaceship window, mls, everyone from the waist down] There is a brief silence. Suddenly everyone disbands, the frame emptying of people. FADE OUT.
3. [cu,pan] Back at the lake, we follow the taut rope, tied to the bow of the rowboat, into the water, coming to the blurred images of Michelle and Roxanne in the water swimming the rowboat towards shore. [2-shot,C.,J.] Jerp and Clerp still appear immensely pleased, but are now looking straight ahead. Suddenly Clerp grows serious.
CLERP (after thinking a moment): “You know, Jerp, there is this…. one possibility about the glitch that’s crossed my mind.”
JERP [3/4pr,ms,J.] (continuing to appear immensely pleased): “Yeah, what’s that?”
CLERP (after a brief pause): “Well, I didn’t want to say this sooner, because it probably would have sounded really crazy." (Jerp nods his head.) [2-shot,C.,J.] “But, Pretz sold me something once, and I’m beginning to think, it’s only a possibility, but I’m beginning to think this ‘glitch’ might be it.”
JERP (Jerp is surprised. There is a momentary pause.): “He sold you the glitch?”
CLERP: “Noooo!” (the word “No” spoken as if it has three syllables) [mcu,3/4pr,J.] “It probably isn’t even… [2-shot,C.,J.] (Clerp gestures with his hands as he speaks) “Okay: Pretz once installed this thing inside the spaceship. I don’t know... where.” [mcu,J.] “Anyway, I figured at the time that it just wasn’t… working…. But, it seems possible, that…. [cu,C.] You see, it’s this thing that’s supposed to, automatically, make everything better.”
JERP [mcu,J.] (after a momentary pause): “What do you mean, automatically make everything better?”
CLERP [cu,C.]: “I’m not exactly sure, but, you know. Everything. Better.” (Clerp thinks a moment.) “I don’t even know why I bought it. Anyway, it’s just a possibility.”
JERP [2-shot,C.,J.] (Jerp thinks a moment, then smiles and looks off in the distance, musing as he contemplates): “Everything, better….”
CLERP: “So, that’s all I’m saying. I think it’s possible, that the glitch is really that - you know?” [ms,3/4pr,J.] (As Jerp considers this, the sound of the glitch is heard, followed by a table lamp appearing from out of nowhere, dangling in mid-air above Jerp’s head, unobserved by either Jerp or Clerp.) “If the glitch is that, you know, that thing Pretz installed that’s supposed to automatically make everything better, I’d guess we’d have to say that it isn’t working properly.” (As Jerp continues to contemplate, the sound of the glitch is heard again and the table lamp vanishes.)
4. (ms,spaceship,outerspace-outerspace) A (different) toy spaceship is flying through the darkness of outerspace. Spray-painted in green on the outside of the spaceship, written graffiti-style, is the word, “Pretz”. Beneath the word “Pretz”, also written graffiti-style, are spray-painted in red the words “is stupid”. Some lines are spray-painted in green over the words “is stupid”, in an apparently feeble attempt to cover up the words “is stupid”. The spaceship exits the frame, leaving behind the blackness of overspace. The word “Outerspace” flashes at the bottom of the screen (as seen in “Gosk-Part I”). [ms,P.(from behind)] Inside the small spaceship is Pretz, sitting at the spaceship steering wheel much like a person driving an automobile. Pretz has purple hair and a Hawaiin shirt.
PRETZ [mcu,P.]: “Now where did I put my soda?” (Pretz thinks a moment, then looks around the [mcu,hand-held,spaceship interior] cluttered cockpit/front seat area. [cu,hand] Pretz opens the glove compartment (located where one would expect to find a glove compartment were one driving a car). Pretz rummages around in the glove compartment with his hand, [mcu,1/2pr,P.] glancing at the glove compartment occasionally, but generally continuing to keep his eyes “on the road”. [cu,hand] His hand detects the soda can.) “Here it is.” His hand takes the soda can out of frame. [mcu,1/2pr,P.] (Pretz is sipping the soda and looking towards the glove compartment.) “Look at that, it spilled on everything.” [ms,P.(from behind)] (Pretz leans forward and places the soda can on the dashboard. Careful not to remove his eyes from looking out of the front window for very long at a time, Pretz continues [cu,hand] rummaging around in the glove compartment with his hand, noticing how sticky everything is, [mcu,1/2pr,P.] making a face from time to time. [cu,hand] Suddenly his hand detects and then seizes some sort of electronic thing in the glove compartment, then takes it out of the frame.) [mcu,P.] (looking downward) “What’s this doing here?” (Pretz holds it up in the air and scrutinizes it.) [cu,electronic thing] “I know what this is. This is that thing that goes with the -” [cu,3/4pr,P.] “No, it’s the, um, oh yeah. This goes with that thing I sold Clerp. Ha-ha! I knew I’d remember what it was!” (Pleased with himself, Pretz puts the thing [cu,hand] back in the glove compartment and closes the glove compartment door. [cu,3/4pr,P.] Pretz sips his soda and returns his full attention to driving. After a few moments Pretz speaks aloud to himself again, sounding more and more like someone on one side of a telephone conversation.) “Yeah, it’s part of that thing…. that uh, that thing….” (after a few moments) “Right, that device, that makes everything better!” (Pretz smiles and has a sip of soda. [cu,dashboard] The soda can is returned to the dashboard.) [cu,3/4pr,P.] “Only it turned out that this part here” (Pretz leans forward and [cu,hand] pats the glove compartment door.) “needed some work.” [cu,P.] (Pretz ceases leaning forward.) “And then what happened? Let’s see, I was fixing it – I finished fixing it - and then I sold the whole thing to Clerp.” (Pretz glances towards the glove compartment door.) [cu,glove compartment door] “That’s it. I must have forgotten to put that thing back in before I sold it to him.” (After a few moments, [mcu,P.] Pretz suddenly appears concerned.) “This could actually cause quite a problem.” [cu,P.] (after a few moments) “It was after that, after I sold Clerp the thing that makes everything better, it was after that, that I sold him that thing for switching everybody from one planet to another.” (after a few moments) [ecu,P.] “If…. that planet switching thing… were to be interconnected to the same system as the…. ‘make everything better’ thing, only, without this thing here -” [cu,hand] (Pretz pats the glove compartment door, then rests his hand on the glove compartment door.) “being attached to it….” (Pretz abruptly withdraws his hand from the glove compartment door, exiting the frame.) [mcu,P.(from behind)] “I better call Clerp and Jerp. I hope it’s not too late.” [mls, spaceship, outerspace] (Pretz’s spaceship is seen flying through outerspace.) “Great. Where did I put their phone number?” (after a few moments) “I’m not going to find it. Unless I can remember it! Let’s see, I know it had 42 digits. 42 or 43 digits. Was it, 492562, no 52, 492552, right, then there was another 2 somewhere, followed by a…. 3…” FADE OUT.
5. [ms,woods-ms,3/4pr,V.] Woods. The sound of the glitch is heard, immediately followed by Vinkalert appearing in frame from out of nowhere. Vinkalert, whose nose is no longer white, is crouching with the appearance of a mime pretending to be driving a car, his hands turning an invisible steering wheel towards the extreme left. [ls,V.] A wider shot reveals that Vinkalert is on an empty stretch of road, alongside of which are the woods. Vinkalert is facing diagonally towards the right side of the road. [ms,V.] A look of confusion comes over Vinkalert. He stops turning the invisible steering wheel, but his hands remain on it. A moment later Vinkalert falls over and out of frame (the words “The Planet Klug” momentarily appear at the bottom of the screen. [mls,V.] Vinkalert is lying on the ground, still poised as if he is driving. He remains frozen in this position for a moment. [cu,V.’s foot] Vinkalert moves his right foot a few times as if to apply an invisible car brake, then stops.
VINKALERT [mcu,V.] (following a momentary pause): “Now the car brake is missing.” [ls,V.] After another moment or two Vinkalert jumps to his feet. [mcu, low angle,V.] (speaking out loud to himself): “So my car has vanished out from under me!” (looking around) [shots of area] [mcu,1/2pr,V.-mcu,full face,V.] “It looks like I’ve suddenly traveled twenty miles! And in the right direction!” (Vinkalert nods his head, then turns his head and looks directly at camera.) [mcu,1/2pr,V.] (no longer looking at camera) “I know exactly where I am.”
[ls,V.] After a moment, Vinkalert puts his hands in his pockets, turns, and begins to walk down the road. [cu,pan, pocket] As we see a shot of Vinkalert’s pocket, the sound of the glitch is suddenly heard. A moment later Vinkalert comes to an abrupt stop. [mls,1/2pr,V.] Vinkalert seems puzzled by something. He removes his hand from his pocket, and looks at something that is in his hand, [cu,coin, hand] an Indian head coin. [ms,low angle,V.] Vinkalert becomes terrified, and throws the coin on the ground (not unlike the way he threw the pail on the ground in “Gosk-Part II”). [cu,coin, ground] The instrumental part of the song “Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procal Harem is heard (as in “Gosk-Part II”). [mls,V.] Vinkalert is looking at the coin on the ground. After a few moments he crosses his arms across his chest, then resumes walking, keeping his arms in this new position. The song “Whiter Shade of Pale” fades out.
VINKALERT [mcu,1/2pr,V.]: “I still have a long way to go ahead of me, but I can make it home on foot. Just so long as the Mars Zuns don’t take my feet out from under me.” (At first this remark to himself makes him smile, but he suddenly becomes scared, as this possibility strikes him as less absurd then when he first made the remark. Vinkalert stops and looks down at [cu,V.’s feet] his feet. Vinkalert begins walking rapidly, which transitions into running.) [mls, from behind,V.]
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #1 (shouting): “Hey! Somebody with blue skin!”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #2 (shouting): “Are you serious?”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #1 (shouting): “Look!”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #2 (shouting): “Oh yeah!”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #3 (shouting): “Let’s capture him!”
[ms,1/4pr,V.-ms,1/2pr,V.] Vinkalert comes to a stop and looks from side to side. [cu,V.-cu,V.(from behind)] Vinkalert apparently spots the sources of these shouts, turns, and immediately begins running again. [ms,V.(from behind)]
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #1: “I think he heard us.”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #3 (after a moment): “Hey, an Indian head.”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #1: “What?”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #3: “I just found an Indian head coin.”
OFF-CAMERA VOICE #2: “You are so lucky. You’re always finding great stuff.”
FADE OUT.
FADE IN. The Mars Zuns spaceship flying in outerspace. Inside the spaceship, as various things attract the interest of the nine Klugians, a variety of moments occur. These moments are presented in a rapid, near-montage, cinema verite style, with a hand-held camera. A series of sequences are intercut with entirely “separate moments” – shots that are not part of an edited sequence.
One such series of shots involves Harryert tripping over a greenish-blue egg-shaped rock, which is lying in the middle of the floor near to a small globe-of-the-world bank, also lying in the middle of the floor. Harryert picks up the greenish-blue egg-shaped rock to examine it, then carefully returns it to the precise spot in which he found it in the middle of the floor and goes on his way. Harryert’s actions are performed in a slightly Chaplinesque way. Throughout the rest of this scene, there are occasional “separate moment” shots of the greenish-blue egg-shaped rock near the small globe-of-the-world bank, involving someone’s feet occasionally walking by these objects without tripping over them.
Another sequence involves Stevert spotting a switch located in an obscure place near the floor, next to the side of the couch that Jerp previously occupied. Stevert unhesitatingly bends down and flicks the switch, which turns on the nearby “out of order” Klug Monitor (as seen in “Gosk-Part I” and “Gosk-Part II”). Stevert immediately goes on his way, completely uninvolved with the question of what the switch might have activated, completely unaware that the Klug Monitor was activated. The first image on the Klug Monitor is a pulsating color pattern, followed momentarily by various random shots of Clerp and Jerp at the lake. In “separate moment” shots, the Klug Monitor suddenly goes off and on from time to time. These images from the lake framed by the Klug Monitor are intercut with images from the lake seen directly, not framed by the Klug Monitor.
Later in the near-montage, Stevert is sitting in the seat on the couch previously occupied by Clerp, absorbed in playing with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer. Stevert has no knowledge of the Vibrashow Tracer Monitor, his eyes not leaving the Vibrashow Tracer itself. Cut to a shot of the framed picture on the red table of Benjamin Franklin. The picture begins moving in place (as in “Gosk-Part II).
[2-shot,from behind,Gl.,Sa.] Gloriert and Sammert are standing in front of the Klug monitor, their backs to the camera. Sammert is wearing a cap with a blinking light on top, which continues to blink on top of his head throughout the remainder of “Gosk-Part III” whenever Sammert is seen. Whenever Sammert is next to someone the reflection of the blinking light is seen on their face.
GLORIERT: “Excuse me, um, where did you get that hat with the blinking light?”
SAMMERT: “I found it in the other room. Isn’t it great? You just press this button on it” (Sammert momentarily points at button, while Gloriert momentarily looks directly at cap.) “here, and it blinks continuously until you press the button again.”
GLORIERT (brief pause): “Yes. Well, but what is it?”
SAMMERT: “There was some caption underneath it, I think it said it’s from this…. planet…. Oh yeah, the Smeepnoip planet. It said that, whenever the Smeepnoips are on the telephone, they turn on the blinking light, so that everyone will know they’re on the telephone, so that, everyone knows to be quiet and not disturb them.”
GLORIERT: “I, uh… Personally, I find it a little distracting. Could you, well, turn it off?”
SAMMERT (brief pause): “I like the way it blinks all the time.”
GLORIERT (brief pause): “Oh.”
Sammert and Gloriert, continuing to watch the Klug monitor, see a brief series of shots at the lake, first seen framed by the monitor, but then seen without being framed. Clerp finds a black cup on the floor of the rowboat, leans over the side of the rowboat to fill it with water, drinks from the cup, is slightly taken aback to see a small fish in the cup, and pours the remaining contents of the cup, including the fish, back into the lake.
GLORIERT [mcu,Gl.(from behind), monitor)]: “I guess they call it the Klug Monitor because it shows old Klug television shows.” [ls,lake scene(framed by monitor)] “Right? Isn’t this a repeat episode of ‘Gilliganert’s Island?’”
SAMMERT [cu,pr.,Sa.] (uncertain): “Oh – yeah.”
GLORIERT [ls,lake scene(not framed by monitor)]: “I’m pretty sure this is the one where the Professor teaches Gilliganert how to gather smiffob so they can get off the island - ” [mcu,Gl.] “only it backfires.”
SAMMERT [cu,pr.,Sa.] (nodding his head): “Right.”
[ls,seen from behind,Sa.,Gl.] Sammert and Gloriert briefly watch the monitor in silence. After a few moments, Sammert and Gloriert lose interest and continue on to other things, going their separate ways.
Stevert is continuously playing with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer, oblivious to all else. “Separate moment” shots of Sammert and Gloriert separately involved with various other things aboard the spaceship are seen during the remainder of this scene.
The final series of shots in this scene begins with the sound of the glitch, accompanied by the appearance of the same fish encountered by Clerp a short time before, now suddenly inside of one of the seashell jars (see #10 of “Explanation of Objects Aboard Spaceship” on last page). The fish is flipping around like a fish out of water (which it is). The sound of the glitch is heard again, this time accompanied by the fish vanishing from the seashell jar, and then the sudden vanishing of the vase on the red table. The vase is instantly replaced by a clear jar, inside of which are water and the fish. The empty black cup lying on the floor of the rowboat at the lake is seen framed by the Klug Monitor.
Back at the lake, the same image previously seen, the empty black cup in the rowboat, is now seen without being framed by the Klug monitor. [2-shot,C.,J.(intercut with cutaway shots of water)]
CLERP: “Look at all this water.”
JERP: “Yeah.”
CLERP: “All we have on Mars are those dried up canals.”
JERP: “No water on Mars.”
CLERP: “Millions of years ago there was water.”
JERP: “Was it millions of years ago?” (momentary pause while Jerp thinks.) “Or billions of years ago?”
CLERP: “Hmm. You know, I’m not actually sure. Long before either of us were born.”
JERP: “Yeah.”
CLERP: “I liked walking in the dried up canals. Remember that?”
JERP: “Only we always had to wait until after an hour had passed since our last meal.”
CLERP: “Yeah, that’s right.” [ms,J.-2-shot,J.,CJ.] The sound of the glitch is heard, and someone, Clerpjerp, suddenly appears next to Jerp in the rowboat from out of nowhere, looking straight ahead. Like Jerp and Clerp, Clerpjerp has long green hair and a leather jacket. Jerp looks directly at Clerpjerp.
JERP [mcu,1/2pr,J.] (devoid of excitement, still looking at Clerpjerp): “Hey, Clerp.”
CLERP: “Yeah?” (From the fact that Jerp says nothing further, [mcu,1/2pr,C.] Clerp realizes that Jerp means for him to turn around. Clerp turns around and sees Clerpjerp. [3-shot,C.,J.,CJ.(favoring J.,CJ.)] Clerp and Jerp turn their heads from looking at Clerpjerp to looking at each other, non-plussed. Clerpjerp continues to look straight ahead.)
CLERP [ms,C.] (after casually turning from looking towards Jerp to looking back towards Clerpjerp): “Who are you?”
CLERPJERP [mcu,CJ.] (Clerpjerp looks down, and responds like a person with a multiple personality disorder): “Who am I…. Who am I…. My name.… is… Clerp. Jerp.”
JERP [3-shot,C.,J.,CJ.(favoring J.,CJ.)] (Jerp and Clerp are looking at Clerpjerp.) (Jerp speaks hesitantly, after a momentary pause): “Did he just say his name is Clerpjerp?”
CLERP: “I think so. Yeah.” (Clerp turns back around so that he is facing forward.) [low angle,ms,1/2pr,C.] (after a moment of deep thought) “He looks like you a little bit, Jerp.”
JERP [2-shot,J.,CJ.] (still turned towards Clerpjerp, who is still looking down) (after a moment): “What did you say your name is?”
CLERPJERP: “Clerpjerp.” (Jerp turns his head towards Clerp.) [3-shot,C.,J.,CJ.(favoring J.,CJ.)] (Clerp turns back around and looks at Jerp, who is looking at Clerp. Clerp then shifts his attention to Clerpjerp.)
CLERP: [mcu,CJ.] “He sort of looks a little bit like me, too. You know? Doesn’t he sort of look like both of us?” (The sound of the glitch is heard, followed by Clerpjerp vanishing.) [mcu, full face,C.-mcu,1/4pr,C.] Clerp first looks slightly surprised, then his normal expression returns. Clerp faces forward again.)
JERP [ms,3/4pr,J.] (after a pause): “Clerp?”
CLERP: “Yeah?”
JERP: “Who do you think that was?”
CLERP [mcu,1/2,C.] (with gravity, after pausing): “Us. Both of us.” [mcu,J.] (Jerp appears to have difficulty grasping this idea.) [cu,C.] “I think he was created by the glitch.”
JERP: “Created by the glitch…. Where do you think he went?”
CLERP (after a moment): “Nowhere.” [mcu,J.] (Jerp thinks a moment, then smiles.) [vls,C.,J.,rowboat,lake] FADE OUT.
8. Exterior of a gourmet coffee store, “Gourmet Outerspace Java”. Inside, Pretz is speaking to the Store Clerk, who has blue hair. Following one interior long shot, entire scene is shot with extreme close-ups of Pretz and the Store Clerk. Pretz is mostly grim and sad throughout the scene.
STORE CLERK: “Will this be all? Just this coffee machine?” (Pretz, who is looking down sadly, doesn’t seem to hear.) “I said, will this be all?”
PRETZ: “Yeah.”
STORE CLERK: “Okay, then that will be 17 sabwezes and 29 spebs.”
PRETZ: “Here you go.”
STORE CLERK: “You know, you seem awfully sad for someone buying a great new coffee machine.”
PRETZ: “Oh, it’s a long story. Um, do you think you could gift wrap it?”
STORE CLERK: “Sure.”
PRETZ: “Yeah, I sold someone a device, a really complex electronic device, you know, for their spaceship? Only then I figured out it could seriously malfunction, without a certain component, that I left out because I was fixing it. So, I’m getting them this coffee machine to sort of make up for it.”
STORE CLERK: “Well, I’m sure whatever malfunctions, they’ll be glad to be getting this new coffee machine.”
PRETZ: “I suppose. They have needed a new coffee machine for a long time.”
STORE CLERK: “So, uh, if you don’t mind my asking, what happens if this thing you sold them malfunctions?”
PRETZ: “A total catastrophe.”
STORE CLERK: “That’s too bad.”
PRETZ: “Yeah…. And I don’t even know where they are. I lost their phone number.”
STORE CLERK: “Oh…. So I guess you tried dialing information.”
PRETZ: “They’re not listed. I mean, they could be anywhere. Do you know how big the universe is?” (The Store Clerk nods his head.) (pause) “This malfunction? It could actually wipe out two planets.”
STORE CLERK: “That really sounds terrible! Which - which two planets?”
PRETZ: “Planet Klug, and Planet Earth.”
STORE CLERK: “No! I love Earth!”
PRETZ: “I really don’t think it’s very likely.”
STORE CLERK: “Well that’s a relief!”
PRETZ: “But it could happen.”
STORE CLERK: “No!”
PRETZ: “I wouldn’t worry about it, though.”
STORE CLERK: “Ah, that’s good!”
PRETZ: “But it is a definite possibility.”
STORE CLERK: “What a tragedy that would be!”
PRETZ: “Yeah.” (pause) “So I thought I’d at least get them this new coffee machine. You know, to sort of smooth things over.”
STORE CLERK: “I understand.” (The Store Clerk thinks a moment.) “Here, let me throw in a free pound of coffee.” (Pretz smiles sadly and nods his head. The Store Clerk smiles hopefully. Pretz looks down sadly.)
9. [ms,low angle,Ro.,Bi.,S.,Sa.(from behind, their heads beyond the frame line)] Back in the spaceship, Rogert, Billert and Sammert are standing in a close group around the poster of the naked outerspace woman. The image of the group of men is not unlike that of people in a museum studying a particular work. Stuert joins the group, blocking the camera’s view of the poster. [mcu,poster-cu,poster] The naked outerspace woman has a few more heads, arms and legs than when last seen (as well as other additional body parts). One of the new, additional heads is a blue-skinned woman, whom the camera zooms in on. [ls,Ro.,Bi.,S.,Sa.,H.(from behind)] Harryert approaches and tries to get a view of the poster, but there are too many others around it. Harryert, in a Chaplinesque manner, tries unsuccessfully to improve his view by [cu,1/4pr,H.(entering frame from below frame line)] [cu,tiptoes] standing on tiptoes, [ls,Ro.,Bi.,S.,Sa.,H.(from behind)] jumping, and moving from one side of the back of the group to the other.
[ms,St.-2-shot,H.,St.] Stevert is still sitting on the couch, continuing to play with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer, oblivious to all else. Harryert enters the frame and sits down next to Stevert. Harryert, with an injured/annoyed expression, looks straight ahead, then looks towards [ls,Ro.,Bi.,S.,Sa.(from behind)] Rogert, Billert, Sammert and Stuert blocking his view of the naked outerspace woman poster. [mcu,H.] Harryert is looking towards his left, then looks straight ahead, the injured/annoyed expression remaining on his face. [cu,foot, briefcase] The back of Harryert’s foot accidentally hits the edge of an old, brown, leather briefcase, which is beneath the couch next to the kladgebodge (as seen in “Gosk-Part II”). [2-shot,H.,St.] Harryert remains looking straight ahead, his expression indicating something has just happened, but he doesn’t know what. Harryert looks down to see what his foot hit, then bends down. Harryert picks up the briefcase and puts it on his lap. Harryert looks straight ahead to think a moment. [ms,H.] Harryert looks down and unlatches and unbuckles the briefcase, finding several magazines inside. Harryert flips from one magazine to the next with general disinterest, momentarily glancing over towards the group of men blocking his view of the naked outerspace woman poster, the same injured/annoyed expression returning to his face. [H.POV,magazines] Among the magazines Harryert sees are “Amateur Radio” from November, 1928, a 1960’s movie star magazine, “Trailer Parts and Supplies” from 1954, and “America, an Ecology Coloring Book”. Harryert stops on “America, an Ecology Coloring Book” and pages through it.
[2-shot,De.,Gl.(from behind, from the waist down),Earth monitor] Debbert and Gloriert, seen from the waist down, are facing towards the Earth monitor while standing off to the side. On the Earth monitor there can be seen shots of Buegert, Tuxert, Dockert and Leonard in the woods (as in “Gosk – Part II”). All in the woods is as before, except that Dockert has resumed lying on the ground with his eyes closed.
GLORIERT (after a brief pause): “I know what movie this is.”
DEBBERT: “Hmm?”
GLORIERT [mcu, low angle,1/2pr,Gl.]: “‘Deliverance Duel’. You know, that camping trip movie?”
DEBBERT [2-shot,De.,Gl.(from behind, from the waist down),Earth monitor]: “‘Deliverance Duel’?” [mcu, low angle,De.] (thinking a moment, not appearing to share Gloriert’s conviction) “Yeah, I guess so.”
GLORIERT [2-shot,De.,Gl.(from behind, from the waist down),Earth monitor]: “This is that part where she can’t find the hunting knife.”
DEBBERT: “Right.” [2-shot,Gl.,De.] (Gloriert looks at Debbert, who is watching the Earth monitor, thinking, her expression not revealing her skepticism of Gloriert’s statement. Gloriert resumes watching the Earth monitor.
[cu,Earth monitor] The image of Leonard playing the violin is seen. Suddenly, accompanied by the sound of the glitch, Leonard transforms back into the original Leonard (Leonard #1), who is playing the violin. A few moments later Leonard #1 vanishes altogether. [mls,Gl.,De.(from behind)-mls,Gl.,De.(from behind),L.-mls,Gl.,De.(from behind),B.,T.,D.]
DEBBERT: “That guy there, the one playing with that thing, he just vanished, right?” (Leonard #1 suddenly appears in the room Gloriert and Debbert are in, sitting on the floor, continuing to play the violin as if nothing has happened.)
GLORIERT: “No, he didn’t vanish. He just went somewhere. Don’t you remember this part of the movie?” (After a few moments Leonard #1 vanishes from the room, replaced momentarily by Tuxert, Buegert and Dockert, in the same positions as when last seen. After a moment Tuxert and Buegert look around at their new environment, without seeming discombobulated, while [mcu,D.] Dockert remains lying on the ground with his eyes closed.) [mls,Gl.,De.(from behind),B.,T.,D.-MLS,Gl.,De.(from behind)] “See, there he is again.” (Buegert, Tuxert and Dockert suddenly vanish from the room, accompanied by the sound of the glitch. Gloriert and Debbert continue facing the Earth monitor for a few moments, then exit the frame, first Debbert and then Gloriert, each going their separate way.)
[ms,H.] Harryert, meanwhile, is paging through the coloring book. [H.POV,coloring book] Harryert stops on a page in the coloring book that is colored in. A few “voice balloons” have been added on in crayon to the coloring book characters, with odd captions such as “Hey Clerp! Do they deliver pizza to the Rabotatium Solar System, or do we have to eat tuna fish again?” [mcu, low angle,H.] Harryert scrutinizes this page, looking closely at certain parts of the page, then closes the coloring book and picks out the 1960’s movie star magazine, which he proceeds to page through. Harryert stops on a page that catches his interest, lifts up the magazine and reads, his face hidden by the magazine. [cu,briefcase, crayons] Due to the way the briefcase is tilting on Harryert’s lap, a few crayons fall out of the briefcase, landing on the floor. [cu,floor, crayons]
[ms,H.] Harryert bends down, picks up [cu,hand, crayons] the crayons, and [mcu, pan,H.] sits up. Harryert looks down towards [H.POV,mcu, crayons, briefcase] the crayons, then puts them back inside the briefcase. Harryert’s hand suddenly stops inside the briefcase a moment. [ms,H.] Harryert is looking down at the briefcase, his hand still inside it. As occurred earlier, his expression indicates something has just happened, but he doesn’t know what. Harryert slowly removes from the briefcase several folded up, stapled-together pieces of paper, which he looks down at and begins to slowly, carefully unfold. [cu,article] When it is completely unfolded it is revealed to be a Nation’s Inquisitor magazine article with the heading, “Streetgang From Mars Up To New Tricks”. [2-shot,H.,St.] Stevert continues playing with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer, oblivious to everything else. Harryert reads the article, not showing a great amount of interest, glancing around occasionally. Suddenly Harryert discovers something in the article that totally captivates him.
HARRYERT [ecu, article] (reading aloud in a low voice): “‘If you should ever find yourself aboard the Mars Zuns’ spaceship, you won’t want to miss the beautiful poster they have of a naked outerspace woman.’” [cu,H.] “‘Do you like female arms? Do you like female legs? Do you like – well, whatever you like about women, this one’s got it, and plenty. We mean a whole bunch of arms, legs - whatever!’” (Harryert looks from the article over towards the group of men clustered around the poster. Harryert suddenly looks down towards the article again, [cu,article] and moves his finger over the page as he scans through the article. Harryert reads, in a low voice, from a spot on the page where his finger has stopped.) [mcu,3/4pr.,H.] “‘Another must-see aboard the spaceship is the greenish-blue egg-shaped rock, which is described by a caption beneath it as the ‘Product of a Failed Attempt to Create an Earthling Grandchild of George Washington and King George of England.’” (Harryert puts down the article, and looks at a downward angle a short distance in front of himself.) (in a low voice) “Alright. So who are George Washington and King George of England?” (Harryert, without shifting his eyes, suddenly seems to notice something.) (in a low voice) “Wait!” [2-shot,low angle,pan,H.,St.-ms,H.] (Harryert stands up from the couch, article in hand, continuing to look at a downward angle a short distance in front of himself, but now apparently looking at something specific. Harryert walks forward and out of frame. [cu,rock,H.’s feet] The greenish-blue egg-shaped rock lying in the middle of the floor that Harryert tripped over earlier is seen, momentarily joined in the frame by Harryert’s feet, Harryert apparently standing over it. [mcu,H.] Harryert is looking straight down. [ecu, rock] [cu,H.] Harryert looks up from the floor, and momentarily his eyes settle on something, [cu,empty shelf, caption] the empty shelf with the caption for the greenish-blue egg-shaped rock. Harryert’s voice is heard with a strange acoustic and echo, this time reading the caption, “Product of a Failed Attempt to Create an Earthling Grandchild of George Washington and King George of England!”. [mcu, rock, small globe,H.’s hand] Harryert picks up the rock, the small globe-of-the-world bank lying on the floor in the background, which solely occupies the frame when the rock is removed. [mcu,H.(seen from behind)] Harryert, walking, exits frame. [mcu, shelf] The rock is placed on its shelf.) (a low voice) “Here you go.” [ms,St.-2-shot,H.,St.-ms,St.] (Stevert is still playing with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer, oblivious to all else. Harryert returns to his seat on the couch next to Stevert. Harryert again scans through the article, moving his finger over the page. Momentarily Harryert stands up and exits the frame in the direction of the naked outerspace woman poster. [mls,1/4pr,H.,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,S.] Harryert, his eyes on the magazine article, is standing next to the steering wheel, and is behind Rogert, Billert, Sammert and Stuert, who remain clustered around the naked outerspace woman poster. [ms,low angle,H.,1/2pr-3/4pr] Harryert suddenly moves his finger over a line in the article. Harryert then stands on his tiptoes for a momentary better view of the poster. Harryert resumes looking at the article, nodding his head as if he has confirmed something. Harryert moves his finger over another line in the article, and with his finger stopped on a specific point in the article, turns around 180 degrees.) (without removing his eyes from the article, reading aloud in a low voice) “We’re the Mars Zuns (the Streetgang from Mars).” Harryert looks up from the article, directly straight ahead. [ms,wall] Written on the wall graffiti-style are the words,“We’re the Mars Zuns (the Streetgang from Mars)!” (as seen in “Gosk-Part I”). [cu,H.] Harryert breaks into a big smile.)
[mcu,J.] Back at the lake, Jerp, continuing to face forward as before, appears to be concerned about something.
JERP (speaking after a few moments): “Clerp. What are we going to do without our spaceship?”
CLERP [vls,C.,J.,rowboat on lake(extremely far away)]: “So! You’re worried about that!”
JERP (hesitantly): “Well, a little.” (Clerp heaves a sigh.)
CLERP (continuing to face forward as before): “Listen.” [2-shot,C.,J.] “I’ve got everything figured out.”
JERP (following a momentary silence): “Well?”
CLERP: “We can build another spaceship!”
JERP: “But how can we do that?”
CLERP [mcu,C.]: “Easy. Spaceships really aren’t as difficult to put together as you might think.” (There is a momentary pause.) [mcu,J.] (Jerp is listening with great attentiveness.) “I just need to find a soldering iron, a few cars, and.... a hardware store.” [2-shot,C.,J.] “After that, it shouldn't take…. more than a couple of hours.” (Clerp smiles triumphantly, while Jerp appears to be trying to visualize Clerp’s process. Jerp nods his head, pleased that there is a solution, without necessarily understanding the particulars.) [mcu,C.] “Also: our spaceship is pre-programmed. Whenever no one pilots it for a certain period of time, the spaceship automatic pilots itself to a pre-selected destination.”
JERP [mcu,J.]: “Pre-selected destination? Where? Where does the spaceship go?”
CLERP: “Well,” [2-shot,C.,J.] “you know how Earth is our favorite planet?”
JERP: “Right?”
CLERP: “And you know how American culture is our favorite Earth culture?”
JERP: “Yeah?”
CLERP: “And you know how New York City is our favorite place in America?”
JERP: “You must be semming! Of course I love New York.”
CLERP: “Well, you’ll never guess what I did.” [mcu,J.] “It goes to New York City! I found a really great parking space for the spaceship on Earth, in New York City!” (Jerp immediately grins.)
JERP: “On the corner of 59th and 6th?”
CLERP: [2-shot,C.,J.] “No…” (Jerp appears mildly disappointed for a moment.) “I know how that’s one of our favorite places in the solar system, but, I just couldn’t find a single parking space there. Actually it wasn’t very easy finding an empty parking space anywhere in New York City. Every time I programmed in a parking space, somebody else would park there.”
JERP [mcu,J.] (his expression brightening): “I love New York City! There’s so much great stuff there! Excellent choice, Clerp.”
CLERP [cu.,C.] (smiling): “It’s only the greatest city on Earth!”
JERP: “That’s where I bought” [2-shot,C.,J.] (Clerp is still smiling from his previous statement endorsing New York City.) “that thing from that guy on the street, you know, that thing? That thing that I got?” [mcu,J.] “From that street vendor?” [2-shot,C.,J.] (Clerp thinks a moment, then makes an “Oh brother” expression, unseen by Jerp due to where they are seated and where they are facing.) “That little iron woman? He said she was transformed into iron while she was attacking someone?” (brief pause) [mcu,J.] “That street vendor sold it to me?”
CLERP: “I told you before, Jerp. He tricked you.” (Jerp’s expression scarcely changes.) [mcu,Bi.] (Aboard the spaceship, Billert is scrutinizing something as we faintly hear the song “Desiree” playing in the background.) “It is not a woman transformed into iron while attacking someone.” [mcu, bowling trophy] (The bowling trophy statuette on a shelf in the spaceship) {see #12 in “Explanation of Objects on Spaceship” on last page} “Remember that Earth game where they go bowling? Remember that, Jerp?” [ms,1/4pr,Cy.,B.,S.] (Wider shot of the bowling trophy statuette in the spaceship, now seen being contemplated with great seriousness by Cynthiert, Billert and Stuert.) “That’s what it is. It’s a bowling trophy.” [2-shot,C.,J.] (Clerp slowly shakes his head, trying to find the most tactful way to express himself.) [mcu,J.] “You told some sidewalk hustler you were from Mars, which of course you’re not supposed to do when you’re on Earth,” [mcu,C.] “so he told you, his bowling trophy was, let’s see, how does that go, a small woman,” [cu,bowling trophy and caption] (A caption underneath the bowling trophy states that it is a “Small Woman Transformed Into Iron While Attacking Someone With a Sphere Zod”.) “who was transformed into iron, while she was attacking someone, with a Sphere Zod.” [2-shot,C.,J.] “Now let me explain something to you, Jerp. There’s no such thing as a Sphere Zod.”
JERP: “How can you be sure there’s no such thing as a Sphere Zod? Maybe there is.”
CLERP: “You bought a bowling trophy.”
JERP [cu,J.] (brief pause): “It is not.”
[2-shot,Cy.,B.(S.’s shoulder also visible)] Billert chooses to be extremely skeptical of the caption, as indicated by the expression on his face. Billert exits the frame, shaking his head skeptically. Cynthia, continuing to contemplate the bowling trophy, doesn’t seem to notice. [cu,orange ball] [ms,orange ball,B.(1/4pr.)] Billert is standing in front the shelf on which there is an orange ball {#2 in explanation of things aboard spaceship at end of outline}. [ecu, orange ball] The caption beneath the orange ball reads, “Earth Dog Centering Device”.
CLERP [2-shot,C.,J.]: “I don’t even think there is such a thing as tiny people in the universe.”
JERP: “There are too.”
CLERP: “Well, anyway….”
JERP [mcu,J.] (after a brief pause): “Clerp?”
CLERP: “Yeah?”
JERP (exuberantly): “Clerp, let’s go see another rock concert the next time we’re in New York City!”
CLERP [2-shot,C.,J.]: “Okay! No wait. We moved all of the Klugians to New York City, remember? See what I mean?”
JERP (nodding his head, looking downward, dejected): “Oh yeah.” (Clerp turns around to look at Jerp, then turns back around to face forward again.)
CLERP [mcu,C.] (brief pause): “Things won’t be too bad, once I put together a new spaceship. This is what I was thinking: after we finish building the new spaceship, then we fly to New York City, and use the new spaceship, to retrieve the old spaceship. Okay?”
JERP [2-shot,C.,J.] (still looking downward, dejected): “Okay.”
CLERP: “I just hope no one’s parked their car in our parking space.” [vls,C.,J.,rowboat,lake] “If they did, I don’t know whether…. Our spaceship would smash up their car, you know, landing on it? Or if the spaceship would get smashed up…. Or maybe both the car and the spaceship would get smashed up…. Or maybe they would just fuse together….” FADE OUT.
[cu,poster of naked outerspace woman] [ls,H.,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,S.] Back on the spaceship, the group of Klugian men continue studying the poster of the naked outerspace woman. Harryert is standing next to Stuert, who seems oblivious to him. On the other side of Harryert is the steering wheel (as seen in “Gosk-Part I”).
HARRYERT (addressing himself to Stuert, speaking in a low voice): “Why don’t you listen to me? I’m telling you, I’ve figured out where we are! I mean, I found a magazine article about it. Listen to me!” (Stuert continues to be oblivious to Harryert. Harryert begins speaking in a loud voice, addressing himself to everyone, waving the magazine over his head.) “Listen everybody! You won’t believe this!” (Harryert still finds that no one is paying attention to him.) [ms,St.] Stevert remains preoccupied with the Vibrashow Tracer.) “You won’t!” [ls,H.,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,S.] (Everyone continues to ignore Harryert. Undaunted, Harryert exits the frame in the direction of the second room of the spaceship.)
HARRYERT (voice only, muffled slightly as the result of his being in the other room): “Listen!” (after a few moments) “Stop everybody, I found out where we are!” (This phrasing causes everyone to interrupt themselves to look in the direction Harryert was last seen going in, except Stuert, who remains preoccupied with the poster of the naked outerspace woman. The sound volume increases with each word Harryert speaks, and everyone on-camera (except Stuert), apparently focused on something moving, turns.) “I found out where we are!” [(Harryert walks back into frame, continuing to wave the magazine article over his head. Harryert occupies a spot in the room on the other side of the steering wheel, alternating between facing in the general direction of Rogert, Billert, Sammert, Stuert, and facing the general direction from which he entered the frame.)
[mls,H.(from behind),De.,Gl.,Cy.] Debbert, Gloriert and Cynthiert are gathered by the doorway between the first and second room, looking at Harryert, who continues waving the article in the air, although his hand holding the magazine are above the frame line.
HARRYERT: “I know where we are!” [cu,,hand, magazine article]
CYNTHIERT [mcu,Cy.] (after a moment): “Alright, where?”
HARRYERT [ms,1/2pr,H.-ms(from behind),H.-ms,full face,H.] (turning around 360 degrees, waving the magazine article above his head): “It’s all in this magazine article I found! It’s all right here!”
GLORIERT [3-shot,De.,Gl.,Cy.]: “Go on.”
HARRYERT [ms,1/2pr,H.] (coming to a stop, looking for the person who spoke, and then apparently spotting the person): “Hmm? Oh yeah.” (looking down towards the article) “It’s all right here. Umm… uh, okay, this part: ‘Clerp feels certain that the-’, no wait, uh, ‘Jerp agrees with Clerp, that if they build a…,’ no, um, ah! Here! ‘The innocent looking red table one sees aboard the Martian spaceship, located next to, next to the couch,’” (Harryert looks up from the article, turns and glances around slowly, [ms,red table] [ms,H.] slowly points towards the red table, then, still pointing, looks down at the article again.) “‘is actually an important, historical artifact.’” [ms,St.,red table next to him)] (Stevert is looking at the red table.) “‘According to…. Clerp, this is an Obbosp table, and is responsible for causing a major war on…. Oh-bosp-bee, in which two million…. Obbospians, lost their lives.” [ms,high angle,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,(from behind),St.(1/2pr),H.(full face),S.(1/4pr),red table] (Stevert, Rogert, Billert and Sammert are facing towards the red table, Stuert remains facing towards the poster, and Harryert remains facing towards the doorway between the two spaceship rooms, looking down at the article.) “The war started when ten…. Obbospians, couldn’t agree on who the table belonged to. That was enough for everyone on Ohbospbee to join in.’”
GLORIERT [mcu,Gl.]: “It just looks like a red table to me.”
HARRYERT [mcu,H.(full face-1/4pr)] (still reading): “‘Another interesting item is The Five Minutes Ago Monitor. The Five Minutes Ago Monitor was built by The Mars Zuns in order to help them to…’” (Harryert looks up from the article and looks around until he spots it.) “I know I saw it somewhere…. There it is.” (Harryert continues reading aloud.) [ms,monitor-ms,Ro.,Bi.,Sa., De.,Gl.,Cy.(all from the waist down)] (The Five Minutes Ago Monitor shows Stevert playing with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer in the background, and the steering wheel in the foreground. Harryert excitedly enters the monitor frame, stopping abruptly, article in hand. Harryert looks down at the article, looks up, sees something out of frame, and abruptly exits the monitor frame. As Rogert, Billert, Sammert, Debbert, Gloriert and Cynthiert, seen from the waist down, gather around The Five Minutes Ago Monitor, the camera’s view of it is gradually blocked.) “‘The Five Minutes Ago Monitor was built by The Mars Zuns in order to help them to remember things. Specifically, Jerp noticed that sometimes he would forget what he had been doing five minutes before.’” (Rogert, Billert, Sammert, Debbert, Gloriert and Cynthiert (still only seen from the waist down) all turn around towards Harryert. Cynthiert and Debbert walk out of frame towards Harryert.) [ms,H.,St.-3-shot,H.,St.,De.,Cy.] (Harryert remains standing in the same spot, which is a different spot from the one on which he was seen on the Five Minutes Ago Monitor, as clearly indicated by his proximity to the steering wheel.) “‘The only problem with the Five Minutes Ago Monitor, explained Jerp,’” (Debbert and Cynthiert enter the frame and stand on either side of Harryert, peering over Harryert’s shoulder at the article.) “‘is that, quote, Sometimes when I look at it I get confused and think it’s showing what will happen five minutes later in the future. So then I say to Clerp: Clerp? Did that happen yet, or is that going to happen? And what is Clerp’s response when Jerp asks him this? Quote, Clerp gets angry at me and says: Stupid. Close quote.’” Harryert looks up from the article, thus facing towards Rogert, Billert, Sammert, and Gloriert.)
CYNTHIERT: “He’s right.” (Cynthiert looks up from the article, thus facing towards Rogert, Billert, Sammert, and Gloriert.) “That’s where we are.”
DEBBERT (still looking down at the article): “I don’t understand. You mean we’re five minutes into the future?”
CYNTHIERT (still facing towards Rogert, Billert, Sammert, and Gloriert): “What? No. No, what I mean is, he was right, when he said we’re aboard a Martian spaceship.”
STEVERT [mcu,St.] (nodding): “I think so too.”
[mls,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,Gl.] There is a general murmur of agreement from Rogert, Billert, Sammert, Cynthiert, Debbert and Gloriert. [mls,H.,S.,De.,Cy.] Harryert looks over towards [ms,S.(from behind)] Stuert, who remains preoccupied with the naked outerspace woman poster. [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] Harryert appears momentarily surprised that Stuert hasn’t torn himself away yet.
CYNTHIERT: “Does the article say anything about this music? I mean it’s so unbelievable, but it’s just, the volume is too low to hear it. I wish there was some way to make it louder.”
DEBBERT: “Yeah!”
GLORIERT [cu,Gl.]: “That would be great!”
HARRYERT [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] (Harryert redirects his attention from looking towards Stuert to looking down at the article. Cynthiert and Debbert are peering over his shoulder at the article with more intense interest than before.): “No, I didn’t see anything about the music. But there are a lot of other things in here..” (There is a momentary silence, except for the perpetual, faint sound of the song “Desiree”.) “Let’s see. Well it says there’s some kind of a glitch here. The spaceship has a big glitch, making all kinds of strange things happen.” [mls,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,Gl.] (Everyone murmurs a degree of concern.) [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] “And…. What’s this? Ummm…. The Mars Zuns, you know, Clerp and Jerp? They’re playing this, this prank on everybody. [cu,1/4pr,H.] “They’ve switched everyone from the Planet Klug to the Planet Earth, and everyone from the Planet Earth to the Planet Klug.” (Everyone murmurs a greater degree of concern. There is another silence.)
SAMMERT [mls,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,Gl.]: “How do you like that? I knew we weren’t on Klug! Remember when I said we might not be on Klug, that we might not have departed from Klug, I mean, you know, when we were all talking about how different everything seemed?”
GLORIERT [2-shot,Gl.,Sa.] (nudging Sammert, then speaking in a low voice, addressing herself to him): “I actually never even heard of Planet Earth before. It could be that somebody just made up this ‘Planet Earth.’” (on the side of his face Gloriert can’t see, Sammert makes a face indicating he tends to think Gloriert never knows what she’s talking about, then turns slightly towards Gloriert and nods agreeably.) [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] (Cynthiert continues to peer over Harryert’s shoulder at the magazine article, while Debbert is looking directly at Harryert, two inches from her.)
HARRYERT (reading aloud): “‘We’ve already told you about Clyde, the person selected by the Mars Zuns as the only native of Earth to be left behind on Earth during the planet switch.”
GLORIERT [2-shot,Gl.,Sa.] (once again speaking in a low voice, addressing herself to Sammert): “What kind of made up name is Clyde!”
HARRYERT [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] (continuing to read aloud): “Well, as promised, for those of you waiting to find out the name of the person selected by the Mars Zuns as the only native of Klug to be left behind on Klug,” [mcu,St.] “yes, we now have news about this latest interplanetary celebrity: Her name is Gosk, and she’s a 5’9” bombshell who enjoys sklopping and splooking. Her favorite colors are….’” [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] (Harryert looks up from the article.) “And so on. I can’t seem to find anything in the article about where the Mars Zuns put the steering wheel, though….” (Cynthiert and Debbert shake their heads in dismay at this. [cu,article] Suddenly the sound of the glitch is heard, followed by the article vanishing from Harryert’s hands into nowhere.) [3-shot,Cy.,H.,De.] (Harryert immediately looks down at his empty hands.)
CYNTHIERT: “The article about the Martians vanished!”
DEBBERT (looking down at Harryert’s empty hands): “How did that happen!”
HARRYERT: “My guess is that that was the glitch I was reading about.”
STEVERT [mcu,St.]: “Right, the glitch.”
CYNTHIERT [mcu,1/2pr.,Cy.] (still looking at Harryert’s empty hands): “Oh yeah, the glitch.”
BILLERT [mls,Ro.,Bi.,Sa.,Gl.]: “The glitch.”
ROGERT: “The glitch, right.” (Gloriert and Sammert nod their heads in agreement.) [ls,H.,De.,Cy.,St.,S.] Stuert remains with his back turned to the group, looking at the poster of the naked outerspace woman, oblivious to everything else. Debbert and Cynthiert are now a few feet behind Harryert, their eyes on him. Stevert is also looking at Harryert.
HARRYERT: “Well! So – in any event, if anyone finds the steering wheel, be sure to let me know.” (Everyone murmurs something indicating that they will. Debbert and Cynthiert exit the frame towards the second room. Stevert resumes playing with the knobs on the Vibrashow Tracer, Rogert, Billert and Sammert enter the frame, returning to the naked outerspace woman poster, and Gloriert returns to the second room. Harryert remains standing next to the steering wheel, looking around. [ms,H.] Harryert looks directly at the steering wheel a moment, then resumes looking around.
Shot of the (toy) spaceship flying in outerspace. FADE OUT.
12. FADE IN. A large crowd of people (Earthlings) are gathered outside of the empty balcony of a room (stock footage of a large crowd outside an empty balcony will be used for the Master Shot). This scene is in spirit something like the storming of the Bastille. People in the crowd randomly shout for common things that they need, addressing themselves to the empty balcony (which we cut to occasionally). The crowd is frenzied, seeming angry, hysterical and/or half-possessed. For the most part, when the words a person is shouting can be heard above the din of the crowd, their face is shown in close-up or extreme close-up, at a low angle, nothing in the frame but the person’s face and the sky. Their are rapid edits, adding to the high energy of the scene.
Preceding the main part of this scene is a comparatively low-key conversation, heard above the din of the crowd, while only the Master Shot of the crowd is visible. The Person #1 says, “You’re kidding. We’re on another planet?” Person #2 says, “Right.” Person #1 says, “No!” Person #2 says, “It just happened all of a sudden. Although, most people only noticed it gradually. Apparently, we were transported from Earth to this planet, no one knows how.” Person #1 says, “How do you like that. So that’s why everything seems so strange.... So now, why is the crowd here, this crowd we’re in?” Person #2 says, “Well, they found one person, this woman… I think her name is Gorsk or…. Gosk or something. Anyway, she’s a native of this planet, right? So that makes her the only one who knows this place, how things work - where things are. You know. So we’re standing here for when she comes out on that balcony up there.” Person #1 says, “Oh yeah. I see it.” Person #2 says, “But, why are you here, in this crowd I mean?” Person #1 says, “Well, I saw the crowd. And…. It looked like something interesting was going to happen.” Person #2 says, “That’s for sure.” Person #1 says, “This is amazing. I’m really glad I came.” Person #2 says, “To this planet?” Person #1 says, “No, I mean here, this crowd. I’m glad I’m in this crowd.” Person #2 says, “I see.” Person #1 says, “I am not glad I’m on this planet.” “You can say that again.”
A person shouts, “Gosk! How can we recognize the Klugian refrigerators!” Elsewhere in the crowd a certain number of people pick up the chant, “Refrigerators! Refrigerators! Refrigerators!”, which gathers steam and loses steam. Once again the same person shouts, this time with even greater intensity, “How can we recognize the Klugian refrigerators!” Elsewhere in the crowd someone shouts, “Soap! I need soap!” A table lamp (the same one that appeared above Jerp’s head earlier) appears in mid-air above someone’s head. One person sees it and, pointing, says, “What’s that doing there?” The table lamp vanishes as quickly as it had appeared, with no one else aware of it except the one person. The person above whose head it had appeared, who was never aware of it or the person who noticed it, shouts, “Gorsk! Do you have television!” Someone shouts, in the same frenzied tone as everyone else, “Hey Gasket! I wanna know where the ham sandwiches are!” This last shout receives scattered shouts of approval. Encouraged, the person who shouted it smiles uncontrollably, and, still frenzied, shouts, “And chicken sandwiches! With…. lettuce!” This receives greater approval, and the people nearby directly express to him their agreement. A mad smile is on the face of this person, who is delighted as he nods to them. Someone shouts, “Glok! Where the hell are the doorknobs on your Goddamn Klugian doors!” Someone (Clyde) who is excessively low-key, and not the least bit hysterical or half-possessed, who doesn’t seem to appreciate the concept of projecting one’s voice, says in a rambling way, “What do the toasters look like? I thought I found a toaster, and then it turned out to be a can opener. Didn’t it? I think it turned out to be a can opener. That’s it. Gosk, I’d like to ask what can openers look like. Just to make sure. Could you please tell me what the can openers, what the can openers look like.” Someone next to Clyde screams in his ear, “Hey Mack! You figured out what their can openers look like?” Turning towards him, Clyde says, “My name isn’t Mack, it’s Clyde. Have I figured out what their can openers look like? I believe that I may have. It’s this…. thing that looks like…. Well, it looks like a toaster, I guess.” Someone nearby says, “Clyde! So do you know anything about their cars?” Clyde responds, “I’m very sorry, but no, I don’t. I, I don’t even think I should be here. I was just sitting at home watching television, I remember the London Philharmonic Orchestra were performing on TV, and then all of I sudden I found myself here. I should really be back home right now.” Someone else shouts, “Yeah Clyde, we should all be sitting at home watching television!” All of the people nearby laugh. Elsewhere in the crowd someone shouts out, “I would like to know who the first president of Klug was! Or perhaps it’s a monarchy, or a dictatorship! Now should it be that Klug is a democracy, is there an electoral college based on regional popularity?” A brief silence falls over the crowd. This is followed by questioning murmurs throughout the crowd of people repeating words and phrases contained in this last question. Momentarily the normal shouting resumes. FADE OUT.
13. FADE IN. [legs, room] The blue-skinned, female legs and feet in high heels of a woman sitting in a chair are seen in the foreground of a nicely carpeted room, but the rest of the woman is not yet visible (the words “The Planet Klug” momentarily appear at the bottom of the screen). Someone knocks, she calls to them to enter, and [ms,V.,FE.] Vinkalert is forcibly escorted in by Four Earthlings. [ms,G.] We now see the face of the woman, Gosk. She is the blue-skinned woman from the poster on the spaceship on whom the camera zeroed in. Gosk and [ms,low angle,V.,FE.] Vinkalert exclaim each other’s names. Vinkalert is released by the Four Earthlings, who exit the room, closing the door behind them. [2-shot,1/2pr,V.,G.] Vinkalert and Gosk emotionally embrace. FADE OUT.
FADE IN. [mls, balcony] The empty balcony is seen as shouts from the crowd are heard. [mcu,Cl.] Clyde says, in his same low-key manner, “Maybe can openers aren’t that important. I should think of something else.” (pause) “I won’t say anything.” [ms,low angle,G.] Gosk comes out onto the balcony, [vls, crowd] immediately sending a hushed murmuring of her name through the crowd, followed by silence.
GOSK (shouting): “Well look at how much larger the crowd has grown in just a short time!” (this remark wins a cheer from the crowd) “I will try to answer as many of your questions as I can! Next time we hope to have some peppicks and loudspeakers set up! But at this time I still have to shout!” (Gosk seems to be noticing a particular person towards the front of the crowd.) “I said, I-still-have-to-shout! I said I still have to…. Anyway, as I said the last time I came out on this balcony, I will answer questions for no longer than one third of a blopfip! I said one third of a blopfip! If I shout any longer than that my throat will start to…. I said if I shout any longer than that - nevermind! Also: The next session will occur in 5 blopfips!”
[3-shot,low angle,TC.] This causes an exchange of remarks somewhere between Three Crowd-members, involving a lot of attitude: “Just how does she expect us to know what a ‘blopfip’ is?” “It might be their word for ‘hour’”. “Couldn’t it also mean ‘day?’” “No. I don’t think it could mean day.” “This is so annoying. I heard her describing something once, remember that time she came out on the balcony, before the last time? I think she was talking about the dishwasher rinse cycle or something. Well anyway, she said, ‘Half an hour’ – so why is she suddenly talking about blopfips of time?” “I had a high school math teacher like her once.” “We’ve all had a high school math teacher like her.”
GOSK [mcu, low angle,3/4pr,G.] (shouting): “We cut our lawns with a device known as a “‘lawnmower’! That’s ‘lawnmower’! But why do you want to know how to cut the lawn? You’re on another planet!”
Someone in the crowd shouts, “It never hurts to keep things neat and tidy! Nothing wrong with that!”
GOSK (shouting): “Now I have a special announcement. I would like to introduce all of you, to someone who happens to be an old friend of mine from Klug, Vinkalert. Vinkalert was found, he was found earlier today!”
[vls, crowd] (The crowd is stunned to learn that another Klugian has been located, and murmurs excitedly.) [ms,G.(from behind)-2-shot,G.,V.] Gosk opens the doors to the balcony and motions to someone inside. Vinkalert strides out, waving exuberantly, immediately sending a hush through the crowd. Gosk turns around and proudly looks at Vinkalert. [vls, crowd] There is a momentary silence, followed by the crowd suddenly erupting into thunderous applause. [2-shot,G.,V.-ms,G.] Vinaklert and Gosk smile at each other, as if they are taking a bow at the opening night of a new Broadway play destined to be a major sensation. Vinkalert looks towards the crowd and resumes smiling and waving. Suddenly Vinkalert vanishes into nowhere, [vls, crowd] which causes a sudden silence to come over the crowd. This is followed by another thunderous round of applause, as if they are watching performers who have just topped themselves with a remarkable magic trick. [mcu, low angle,G.] Gosk, mortified by Vinkalert’s sudden vanishing, bursts into tears, and covering her face, [ms,G.] rushes out of frame through the balcony doors. [vls, crowd] As the applause dies down, someone in the crowd shouts [ms,balcony] to the empty balcony, “What do the Klugian refrigerators look like!” FADE OUT.
[mls,S.(from behind)-2-shot,S.(from behind),V.] Inside the spaceship, Stuert continues to stare at the poster of the naked outerspace woman. The sound of the glitch is heard. Vinkalert suddenly appears aboard the spaceship from out of nowhere, standing next to Stuert but facing in the opposite direction. Vinkalert is still smiling and waving, but then, suddenly seeing where he is, stops in mid-wave. [mcu,V.] Vinkalert is not particularly surprised at having been glitched somewhere, just unhappy. [2-shot,Sa.,St.] Sammert, standing next to Stevert, looking over his shoulder while he continues to be absorbed in hitting buttons on the Vibrawshow Tracer, notices Vinkalert while he is still smiling and waving. Sammert smiles and waves back, then resumes looking over Stevert’s shoulder. [2-shot,S.(1/2pr),V.(full face)] Stuert sees Vinkalert with his peripheral vision, which finally distracts him from the poster, causing him to turn towards Vinkalert.
STUERT: “Where did you - Were you here before?”
VINKALERT [mcu,V.-mcu,V.(from behind)] (unsurprised, looking and turning around, while extremely dejected by his change in circumstances) (in a sad voice): “No, wasn’t here before.” (Vinkalert suddenly spots the [cu,poster] poster of the outerspace woman, which includes, among other heads, Gosk’s head. Vinkalert points at the image of Gosk’s head.) “And she told me - not one hour ago, she said to me, that she keeps…. having this strange dream – where she has all of these heads attached to her! And arms! And – ” [2-shot,S.(from behind),V.(1/4pr)] (Vinkalert interrupts himself and just shakes his head while looking at the naked outerspace woman poster. Stuert is also looking towards the poster.)
STUERT [cu,poster] (in awe, pointing at the poster): “You know her?”
VINKALERT [2-shot,S.(from behind),V.(1/2pr)-2shot,S.(from behind),V.(from behind)] (looking at Stuert momentarily, and then back at the poster): “Well, just….” [cu,poster] “her.” (Vinkalert’s finger touches Gosk’s head on the poster.) FADE OUT.
16. [mls,G.] FADE IN. The song “Desiree” can still be heard in the background. Gosk is sobbing, alone in her room, sitting in the chair. FADE OUT.
Explanation of Objects On Spaceship - List and Description
In addition to objects already seen in the Mars Zuns spaceship in Parts I and II, there are other unusual objects, most of which are located in another room in the spaceship. These objects are examined by the new spaceship inhabitants on several occasions throughout Part III. Most of the objects have their own small shelves with captions beneath them, and while some objects are examined at their places on the shelves, other objects are passed around.
List of The Spaceship Objects
#1 Clear, plastic container shaped like old bicycle horn (including real rubber honker)
#2 Small, orange, textured, luminescent ball with bell inside (pet toy)
#3 Cylindrical (3-inch diameter x 2 inches), steel, socket cover-type object (wall fixture) with metal lid that closes automatically (springs)
#4 Small, worn brass vase
#5 Cow leg bone
#6 Costumed Disney characters in trolley car at Disneyland (framed photograph)
#7 Small mold for making a smiling bear, with cover (plaster-of-Paris, looks like box when closed)
#8 Barnum Animal Crackers tin (“official” replica of 1914 tin), with images of a tiger, lion and elephant in cages depicted on the outside. This tin is not on a shelf, but on the floor against a wall somewhere.
#9 Greenish-blue egg-shaped rock
#10 Jars filled with seashells – 1 big; 2 small. The contents of each jar are essentially interchangeable with the contents of the other jars.
#11 Magnifying glass on stand, aimed at something in front of it, a small, crescent-shaped mirror attached to clear plexiglass.
#12 Bowling trophy, featuring small metal statuette of woman poised with a bowling ball.
#13 Miniature plastic (toy) telephone booth and two park benches
#14 “Planet Switch Readings” monitor.
#15 Small globe-of-the-world bank.
#16 Cadillac photograph on the wall.
Regarding The Spaceship Objects (correlating to numbers on “List of Spaceship Objects”)
#1 A colored (bright yellow?) liquid is in the container. A character stands looking at it, then abruptly honks the horn and leaves.
#2 Caption underneath it reads, “Earth Dog Centering Device”. At one point, when several characters are gathered around looking at it, the same character from Object #1 shakes it, causing the bell inside to rattle. This instantly causes everyone (including the character who shook it) to lose interest, and they all leave.
#3 When the lid is closed, we see a caption on the exterior of the lid, “Clerp’s Mom”. When someone opens the lid and looks inside, cut to an old (1910-1920) picture postcard of a woman wearing a big bathing suit and a strange hat, grinning at the camera and holding a fishing net on a pole with both hands as if she is about to use it. The image is framed inside a circle surrounded by black (as one sees in a movie when a character is looking through a telescope).
#4 A character turns it upside down to see if there is anything to read on the bottom. Oregano pours out. The character picks up a pinch of it, smells it and offers a whiff to someone he’s with, smiling and saying, “Tah-bo-reef!” The other person smells it, smiles and nods her head.
#5 Whenever characters see this they become fearful as to what creature it might have been part of.
#6 Strikes fear into those who see it.
#7 Sign in front reads, “Possible Prehistoric Fossil, Earth”. People come to it after Object #5 and Object #6. With residual tension from Object #5 and Object #6, they lift the cover trepidatiously, look at it, become only slightly disturbed, and replace the cover.
#8 People stop, take one look at the images of caged animals on the outside of the tin, and then move along. One person crouches to get a better look, suddenly reaches his hands out to open the tin, but then withdraws his hands as quickly, losing his courage. He stands up, looks at it one last time, and moves along.
#9 Unlike most of the objects with shelves and captions, the shelf for this object is located in the first room of the spaceship, where the couch and the monitors are, in some spot that wasn’t shown in “Gosk-Part I” or “Gosk-Part II”. Its shelf is empty, and features a caption describing its (missing) object as “Product of a Failed Attempt to Create an Earthling Grandchild of George Washington and King George of England.” The greenish-blue egg-shaped rock is lying in the middle of the floor near the shelf.
#10 As a character’s POV, the camera does quick pan to each jar, stopping at each jar only long enough to read the jar label. One small jar is labeled, “Seashells from Coney Island, Earth”. The second small jar is labeled, “Madgepidges from Mibwob, Klug”. The big jar is labeled, “Seashells and Madgepidges, from Coney Island, Earth and Mibwob, Klug”.
#11 One character, each and every time he encounters a spaceship object, first scrutinizes the object, then gets the idea to more closely examine the object by bringing it to the magnifying glass (as if he’d never had the idea before). He looks at the object through the magnifying glass by eclipsing the crescent-shaped mirror with the object.
#12 Sign in front reads, “Moderately Tiny Woman Who Was Transformed Into Iron While She Was Attacking Someone.” Those who see it contemplate it with great seriousness.
#13 Sign in front reads, “Extremely Tiny Telephone Booth And Benches To Be Used In Case There Are Extremely Tiny People In The Universe”. Those who see it nod their heads as if to say, “Good thinking.”
