INT.COURTROOM - MORNING
WILLA sits at a desk in the plaintiff's side with one other person at the desk. The courtroom is filled with an audience, the defendants, the security guards, the judge, the jury and of course, the lawyers. WILLA along with her companion, BRYAN who has the title of District Attorney has smiles on their faces, waiting for the jury to proclaim their decision. One of the jurors stands up with a piece of paper in her hand.
Has the jury settled on a decision?
Yes, your honor. We, the jury, find the defendant.....(beat) guilty.
As soon as the JUROR finishes his sentence, voices fill the room. WILLA and BRYAN grin happily as they turn to each other and shake each other's hands as a sign of a job well done. The defendant and his lawyer have angry looks and disappointing looks but it doesn't stop WILLA's and BRYAN's glee. Everyone is startled as the JUDGE slams her gavel down on her stand.
Settle down everyone. Will security please take the defendant in custody as punishment will be arranged on another court date. Court is now adjourned.
Everyone please rise for the exit of the judge.
Everyone rises from their seats and JUDGE leaves. Everyone moves around, talking about the case. The defendant LAWYER #1 walks over from his desk to where WILLA and BRYAN are. WILLA is busy packing her briefcase while LAWYER #1 comes and shakes BRYAN's hand.
I gotta hand it to you Bryan, that was some great prosecuting there. I'm not surprised they made you the DA.
Thanks....you did a great job there yourself.
Eh, don't hurt yourself trying to compliment me. I definitely have to work on my research and my people skills so I can learn to suck up to the judge like you do. Oh
and I can't give you too much credit. Your ADA was awesome.
(proud of the compliment)
She's something ain't she? Worked her way up to ADA in four years. Now I think that's pretty amazing.....I'm thinking of watching my back, you never know when might fire me and make her the DA. (laughing)
Aw Bryan, you're bragging again. Thanks for the compliment sir....I greatly appreciate it.
Hell, you deserve all the compliments in the world. ADA in four years? Must be a record if you ask me.
BRYAN and WILLA laughs.
Well I best be going now, but it was nice meeting you two.
The LAWYER shakes hands with WILLA and BRYAN once more before he leaves. WILLA gathers up her things and starts to walk out with BRYAN at her side. They start to walk down the aisle of the courtroom toward the door.
Another case won, Willa. Nice job....I seriously wouldn't be anywhere without my ADA.
You say that as if I were an electric appliance. Cut it out....
Both of them laugh as they walk out of the door into....
INT.HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS
So, how about you and I grab a drink and some dinner for a celebration of another won case. My treat?
That's sweet of you Bri, but I can't. I have to catch a flight to Chicago for a funeral.....
WILLA drifts off into a sad state, looking away from BRYAN. BRYAN thinks for a moment and remembers about her funeral.
Oh yes, that's right. I'm sorry about your parents Willa, it must be a pain to lose them.
I'm getting by. It's just really hard to believe. Then again, I haven't called or talked to anyone back home in Chicago for about four years. I've just been too into work.
Well, you made a great name for yourself here in the city. Every lawyer here in New York seems to know your name. Either that or your reputation for becoming
ADA so quickly after law school. You've got it good hon.
WILLA blushes as they both continue walking into...
EXT. PARKING LOT - CONTINUOUS
How are your sisters holding up?
WILLA pauses in silence, as if she were guilty of something. She bites her lip and has an anxious look on her face.
I haven't exactly talked to them yet since I heard about the accident. So, I really don't know.
Really now? Not even over the phone?
I don't think they even know my phone number. I haven't seen those two in so long.....haven't said one word in ages.
Well that's odd....usually they're the first ones you hear from after a death in the family.
WILLA stays silent about her situation and makes her way to her car. She opens the door, and sits as BRYAN closes the door for her. WILLA rolls down her window and smiles.
Thanks for walking me to my car. I'll see you in a week.
Maybe when you get back, we can go for that celebration drink and dinner?
WILLA smiles and shrugs.
Why not? I could use a night out.
BOTH smile. WILLA pulls out of her parking space and drives off with BRYAN waving to her. WILLA looks at him from her rearview mirror and smiles as she drives. She takes out her wallet from her purse and looks at a picture. It's a pictures with WILLA, and her two sisters, JOSIE and HAYDEN. WILLA sighs as she puts the pictures back into her purse.
Chicago, here I come.
