The Sark Interview: Sark d’Brix (Somewhere Along the Way, And Then Again, Having)
Interviewed by Rez
Q: The “learning experience” in Russia: please summarize the lessons.
First: Never trust the Sien Syndicate. Second: Resourcefulness is, in fact, more valuable than words can express. Third: What goes on in heating ducts, stays in heating ducts. That’s all I have to say on the matter.
Q: What were your suspicions about Eric’s captivity in Spain?
They’re not suspicions, unfortunately. After what happened in Russia, there were several loose ends that I needed to sever. Eric was caught in an unfortunate crossfire. I believe he still considers the event chance. I can’t help but know that it was more calculated than that.
Q: You have many employers. Describe, in particular, the nature and origins of your association with Irina Derevko.
Irina is a delicate balance. I feel, at this time, I have learned everything I can from working for her. I would not be adverse to a professional relationship. She taught me to cook. Not many people have the patience for that.
Q: You seem fond of Jack. What’s the attraction?
If there was one thing that working with Irina Derevko taught me, it was to always appreciate Jack Bristow. Additionally, I see a lot of myself in Agent Bristow. I can’t help but hope I’ll be as capable as he is, should I live as long.
Q: What’s the deal between Eric and Michael Vaughn?
(laughs) There are certain things that, out of respect for the ignorance of Agent Vaughn, had best be left unvoiced. Let it just be said that I no longer consider him a threat, in any aspects of my life.
Q: Locate your relationship with Eric on a scale where 1 is all business and 10 is unadulterated pleasure.
You make the two mutually exclusive?
Q: Professionalism and a certain pigheadedness notwithstanding, Eric’s fallen for you. How will you use his willingness to deceive the CIA on the subject of your relationship? Whom are you deceiving on the subject?
Eric’s deception of his employers is entirely his own decision. He’s a grown man, despite certain impressions, and he knows what is best for him. Should he ever find himself lacking in employment, he knows that he has other opportunities.
I am, for the time being, only deceiving myself.
Q: Did he hold out longer than you’d anticipated or give in sooner than you’d hoped? Ever have any doubts about whether it would work out?
Frankly, he held out longer than I anticipated. Had I not been called away for business, I believe his ‘pigheadedness’ would have been alleviated in much better time. Despite his giving in, however, I don’t have the audacity to think that this battle between us is over. Eric is very tightly wound in his beliefs, and it will take some time to pick at the threads that tie him.
Doubts…(pause) Russia. After I broke my arm. I was delirious.
Q: What made you go after him in the first place?
Eric Weiss is a singularly unlucky human being. Examine his history in the past three years alone, regardless of what happened in his earlier life. I thought he deserved some good luck. Unsurprisingly, the exchange has not been one-sided.
Plus, his hands. Have you seen his hands?
Q: He called you possessive. What single word best describes Eric as a lover?
Did he? (laughs) I would have to say ‘Patient’, of course.
Q: He’s back on desk duty since the kidnap. Is that good, bad, or irrelevant, from your perspective? Explain, please.
My interaction with Sydney Bristow and her crew of mismatched superheroes, has shown me more than once that anyone in contact with her is not without a guardian. Should Eric desire a different position, I have no doubt that he would find himself with whatever job he requested by the start of the oncoming work day.
To answer your question, though, I find his desk work both frustrating and insulting. A man of Eric’s intellectual and field-trained capacity cannot be spared in a cubicle. The CIA has always astounded me with its child-like persistence in relying on a very small number of active field agents.
Q: Eric’s professional sins have been those of omission, so far, where you’re concerned. What’s the likelihood that it’s going to come to a much harder choice for him, at some point? Think he’ll hesitate? In which direction? What about you? Would you give him up out of professional necessity?
It is a good chance that the choice will become harder, and that he will hesitate. In which direction, however, I cannot say. Between mutual manipulation of higher powers and the incredibly useful state of technology in this day and age, I don’t think it will be a problem for me to reverse this hesitation should it be unfavorable for me. I once said that Eric was a man I would think twice before kidnapping. That doesn’t mean I haven’t – or that I won’t again.
There are no necessities in my profession. Everything is adjustable. That said, attractions do wane and shift. Though the circumstance would be quite unfortunate, I could hardly see myself doing something inhumane to keep Eric by my side. I find forced relationships distasteful – I am a man capable of many things; rape is not one of them.
Q: We’ll try this again: date of birth? Place of birth?
What, you don’t want to know my name? July. Crete. Why doesn’t anyone believe Crete? It’s a perfectly nice place.
Q: Your three favorite action verbs?
Giving. Taking. Having.
