The Spider and the Fire
Today, I had the chance to go to a BBQ with one of my best friends. I had a wonderful steak cooked over the open flame and a nice, baked in the coals potato. After supper we sat around the fire and just talked and I must admit, there is something about a nice fire and great friends, talking and laughing, that will lift your spirits. With some coffee in hand every one was quiet for a while and as we were sitting by the fire, everyone in their own thoughts, I had the chance to see a small spider on one of the pieces of wood that had been added to the fire and as I watched this little spider run from place to place to escape the flames, I though of my life and my walk with God. The spider was surrounded on 3 sides by a very hot, quite large flame. Interestingly there was one clear path out of the fire, yet this little spider would only take small movement in the direction of that opening. I sat there memorized by the fact that it did not take what was very clear to me, the open path, but kept trying to hide from the flames, by going under one small opening after another. He must have SEEN the path out of the fire, it was right there in front of him, he kept trying that way but backed away from it, as if he didn’t trust that way out, It was to easy and he would have been safe if he had just take that way. I kept urging it to take that opening, but it never did and finally the flames consumed this little spider. I had so desperately wanted to help that little spider. But, as I watched its movement, I was struck by the similarities of my walk with God and the movement of this spider. How many times, had I tried over the years to do what I wanted, only to be burned? Did I REALLY trust GOD to take me safely through the opening, out of the flames? How many times have we been told in our life, “This is simply a trial by fire”? The bible gives this to ponder on…. James chapter 1 verses 2-8 Trials and Temptations 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. I wonder, if that little spider had known God as we do, would he have trusted God to take him safely out of the fire? If we trust and obey, God will lead us past the temptations in our life, yet he MAY allow us to go through that fire, in order to cleans us. I pray at my next fire, that my feet do not get stuck…and that I will trust God to take me past the flames.I pray also for you, to trust God in all things...and always Give praise. Until tomorrow I remain Your sister in Christ Hobi
