Chronicle of a Dearth Foretold

just watched Farewell to My Concubine. another really depressing film. Leslie Cheung played his role really well, which is really ironic. i think the roles he played had an inevitable influence on the outcome of his life. Watching Cheng Die Yi is like watching a parallel to his whole life. hmmm...why must a great actor choose the path of his characters? is it becos like what is quoted from Concubine, it is very difficult to differentiate between what's real and what's not?

Well, I'd like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I'd like to visit the moon
But I don't think I'd like to live there
Though I'd like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don't want to live on the moon

I'd like to travel under the sea
I could meet all the fish everywhere
Yes, I'd travel under the sea
But I don't think I'd like to live there
I might stay for a day there if I had my wish
But there's not much to do when your friends are all fish
And an oyster and clam aren't real family
So I don't want to live in the sea

I'd like to visit the jungle, hear the lions roar
Go back in time and meet a dinosaur
There's so many strange places I'd like to be
But none of them permanently

So if I should visit the moon
Well, I'll dance on a moonbeam and then
I will make a wish on a star
And I'll wish I was home once again
Though I'd like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I may go I'll be coming home soon
'Cause I don't want to live on the moon
No, I don't want to live on the moon

Just finished watching a rather depressing film, Centrestage. It's actually rather like a quasi-documentary kinda film chronicling the short tragic life of a 30s Chinese movie actress Ruan Ling Yu, who was driven to suicide partly by the paparrazzi. *haiz, journalism had a bad name in those days, it still does not have a good name now. i watched a real silent film starring Ruan called Gimmicks and she was really good (considering that there wasn't sound and it was b/w) but she took her life at 25 as a silent protest against all the rumor mongers.real sad case , tho this has made her some kind of a legend.

at the Commonwealth food centre just now, i saw a young HCJC couple sharing a bowl of noodles. nolstagik! not that i did anything liddat in my time tho. i can hardly rem any instance that i went to a hawker centre to eat with my frens (hmmm...shld have tho.) much less share food with any guy :P i rem a time when i went to the food court above beauty world with a classmate CH tho. it was he who introduced me to the world of mutton soup. that time, he ordered for me a suspicious looking bowl of soup which he claimed was bak kut teh. halfway thru the meal, my impaired tastebuds finally revealed that something was not quite right. i asked him: "what did you say this was? are you sure it's bah kut teh?". he replied nonchalantly: "oh of course, just that the meat is not pork but mutton. nice right?" i thought i d die of horror when i heard that baa baa black sheep was in my soup but on second thoughts, it suited my palate so i kept quiet and continued eating.

jog my memory my friends, for it is a lazy, forgetful bastard. what did we do during our two years there, after sch hours?

I love this song. my neighbor loves to blast it from his speakers at certain times of the day, but i ve no problems with it, until he picks up his microphone to sing.
nice lyrics and a melody that wants to make you cry. i imagine that you have to be standing on a breakwater, watching the setting sun and distant horizon, with the wind in your face, and your tears falling fast and free, and the song in the background. in fact i think that's how he got the inspiration for this song, and the mtv must be pretty much something liddat too.

today i went back to the bridge again. the fish were still struggling against the current. it seemed incredible that they have been doing this day in day out, for months and years. for all eternity, fish have been trying to swim against the current, yet they have been condemned to that spot forever. maybe they weren't trying to move anywhere at all? maybe they were just trying to keep their place? the irony is not lost upon us humans.
on a less burdened note, i got real close to a kingfisher (or some other fishing bird) today.those with brilliant blue wings. maybe Monsieur just got up from bed or have real bad eyesight, to not realise that it was somebody who was ?0 times bigger than him sitting on an ugly two wheel contraption. we stared at each other for a full two seconds, before he realized his folly and flew away.

i might have been influenced to write like Mr Humphreys. been reading his second book and he seems to enjoy nature in Singapore as much.

Bleak
The sky outside is now gloomier (is there such a word anyway. heck i like the way it sounds)than hell. the view outside my window looks like a scene out of Batman's Gotham City. my two lhs are huddling together, despite the partition between them. The New LH looks like its burying its head in The Old One's shoulder (Query: do fish have shoulders?) my suspicions are confirmed: they are afraid of storms. so am i *whine. i can't find a right description to the sky color at this moment, it looks so ominous, so angry. like something bad/strange/both is about to happen. is Godzilla going to rise out of the Johor Straits?

the official second day of loafing. yet i m different afraid to ask how long it ll last. for i might, just the next min, be whisked off to a terrible six months of enslavement. is it better to busy yourself to death or issit better to be on the constant worry abt what to do next? i seriously dunno.

when alone, everything tt you eva wanted to do becomes boring. i.e. you just dun haf the energy to do anything, to go anywhere. yet i dragged myself up to go cycling in the morning. it was lonely, nothing much greeted me but the birds fishing along the canals and the fish forever struggling to swim upstream.
but i discovered something new again. this choa chu kang park that had new exciting signs like: Beware of Falling Durians. okie maybe i m slow, but i d neva seen a sign liddat in any park i ve been to. and i ventured into this little forest clearing nad saw a little girl and her mom sitting there staring into the sky (umm no, actually they were looking at the durians hanging above). the mom told me that she waited for as long as three to four days (with breaks i suppose)before having a windfall (or a durianfall. okie i know it's not funny. perhaps someone cld do a story on Rediscovering Singapore. amidst my terrific boredom, there are a lot of funny little episodes that i witness everyday.

Conversing Silently With Myself
Today i discovered three new things:

1.i think in English, not Chinese.

2.there's a stall at the woodlands hawker centre near the causeway, that sells delicious nasi lemak. (on par with changi village)

3.a lot of pple fish at the kranji reservoir but i din c any catch. *puzzled

well, today i went cycling with my dad all the way to kranji reservoir. it was tiring...i hope i wun get those nasty cramps tonight. it was a good day for cycling, cloudy, with a bit of wind, yet the rain never came. a lot of pple were fishing there, but they din seem to have caught much. :O hmmm...i want to go fishing (or rather i want to learn how to), but i have no fishing kaki :(
next we cycled further down to the sungei buloh area. visited a huge nursery *yawn, and visited an lfs *yawn. nth very interesting except that they reared some big carnivorous fish which they call alligator fish. oh well, it looks like an XXL version of a gar you see in normal aquarium. but they look scary when the owner threw them bits of fresh prawn and they snapped it up with their jaws, really look like alligator then. pretty interesting. maybe someone shld do a story on exotic pets that singaporeans keep. dunno if that ll get plenty of pple in trouble :P
