Your mom's old toaster has found a new home. Kitsch'n on Roscoe uses it
to hold napkins, menus and silverware -- just one of the many different
things you'll find at this restaurant on the up-and-coming Roscoe
strip. The self-dubbed ''comfort food with a twist'' restaurant propels
you back into a '70s childhood -- willingly or not. Don't be afraid to
order Tang or Tab here. The philosophy is 'viva la vintage' and the
party begins from the moment you sit down. Formica tables are filled
with toys like Etch-a-Sketch and Magic 8 balls. Walls are covered with
grade-school pictures and vintage paraphernalia. Even the Colt 45
spokesman smiles with his date from a neon sign that reads, ''It works
every time!'' Feel free to play with the toys, everyone else does,
while waiting for your TV dinner to arrive. The owners say that every
item on the menu was inspired by something Mom or Dad used to make. But
would mom really permit brownie batter for dessert? Kitsch'n encourages
these kinds of kiddy indulgences which add a twist to the traditional
menu of home-cooked staples like potpie, meatloaf and lasagna. The
tongue-in-cheek hot spot also serves an award-winning brunch, which
many patrons prefer over the dinner selection. Pull up a vinyl chair to
green eggs and ham or a Kitsch'n sink omelet. It was even given the
notable ''best hangover breakfast'' honor by 'New City.' There's not
much Kitsch'n can do better in terms of atmosphere; it's truly a
recreation of everything '70s. -- Vanessa Nichols (Photo:
