The trip to Kinsale (with Desmond Castle!)

Grace and I decided to shed the burden of academics for one weekend and take a weekend trip out to Kinsale, home of Charlesfort and Desmond Castle. I was pretty excited because I had never seen a castle except on TV and in photos (and in my imagination).
Our first day there we toured the town and went out at the local pubs. We listened to some bawdy local music at the Mad Monk. These photos are from our second day.

A Medieval Church

Our first stop was a wonderfully preserved medieval church. Unfortunately we didn't have any access to inside.

Charlesfort!

We took a taxi out to Charlesfort and toured this old 16th century fort. It's no longer in use, but it was at one time the scourge of the seas! Unfortunately, someone noticed that while it was virtually impregnable from the sea, it was actually quite pregnable from the land. And it was overtaken.

Grace in a Charlesfort lookout tower?

It was unbelievably windy while we were visiting Charlesfort. There were time we could barely stand. And if I had my back to the wind my glasses blew right off my face. "Gah! My glasses! (wheezy/nerdy noises)"

Fabulous Desmond Castle!

Ah well. Closed. No castles yet.
