2.26.04 Its there.
So first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Dad. I was very lousy about getting to that. We sent off a card from the kids to Grandma, but didn't for our Grandpa, NOT FAIR. Adam has been cute about asking about his grandparents alot though, so know that he's thinking of you. To make up for the late birthday wishes, I thought you should know that the family site should be up in the next three days, and you'll have a daily (or weekly if you prefer) OTR section. I'm hoping that you can share your mp3s with us. You'll be able to upload the file, and then even give us a description and a graphic. Should be cool! At the very least I know that Scott and I will enjoy downloading the daily program.
Anyway, the barebones of our site are up. Visit the site to check it out. The database management for the blog entries is being handled by a utility provided by a company called Six Apart. The tool - Movable Type is great because it is so easy to use for novice web authors once its installed and working. In other words, each member of my family for instance, will get a customized login and password to use from me in an email. Also in the email will be a link to the login site. Dad for instance can then log onto the internet, click to the site, login using the name and password. Once there, there will be a list of blogs that he has rights to. In his case it would be The Ralphy Journal and The Secret Decoder Pin. Then he logs into Ralphy for instance and gets a simple form page that he types into and hits a small publish button when finished...and the note appears on the FAMILY WEBPAGE! Or he can choose the pin blog and enter in important dates coming up...like his birthday so NO ONE LIKE ME FORGETS. Once its ready, I'll send out detailed instructions with your logins.
O.K. so on that note, who gets access to author to the sites?! As the administrator here goes:
The Ralphy Site - The Livingston Family site Scott and LaRae Livingston, their children, and their spouses will all receive these logins by default from me later this week. Any family or friend of the Livingstons who would like to have access needs to mail me a request here.
Homestone Site - The Keating Family site Tom and Lori Keating, their children, their spouses, and Uncle Goo will all receive these logins by default from me later this week. Any family or friend of the Keatings who would like to have access needs to mail me a request here.
Please note that I am only sending out the default logins to those mentioned because it takes time to set up each one. I am in no way discouraging extended family and friends from requesting access. My hope is that the sites will become a communications hub for the whole extended Livingtson and Keating families, not just Tom and Scott's crews.
*All requests will be subject to the Administrator's (my) approval. So if you are a friend, it might be good to get a letter or recommendation from a family member.
All in all I am pretty excited about everything so far. My biggest fear at this point is that I'll get the whole thing set up and then no one will ever use it. Oh well, their loss. Sarah and I will keep our personal blogs up to par, at least.
So I send my love out to you all. We got mad snow yesterday, it was like living in a snow globe all day, big pretty swirling flakes. Nice day. I need to go eat my lunch now. Shawarma! Mmmmmm.
Also, I don't feel like updating this site by moving old letters to individual archived pages as before, since Movable Type will do that all for me. So they are just gonna stay here on this page for now.
Darn.

2.18.04 Breathe people.
O.K. So I took a break.
O.K. So it was a looooooonnnnnnggggg break. It happens. Breathe people. To much has happened to detail, so I'll sum up. Still in Luxembourg, still loving it. Went home for Thanksgiving, and spent two days driving from San Francisco to Phoenix and back to see my beautiful little sister get married, while spending quality time with my family. This was the first time I can remember in a long time when I really loved seeing my family, and really missed them when I left. They are great. It's amazing to see everyone so busy and happy, no matter what or where they may find themselves in life. I keep thinking of the phrase that we use in our family..."live in the cow." That's props to Pappy Keating, going back to a tumultuous time in our families collectives lives, a period of crazy unsecured times when several of us were going through rough patches at the same time. It happened that one day as he sat out on the deck that he watched the cows in the fields adjoining his own, and mused on their simple existence. The fact is that they don't know where or how they will be taken care of, they just keep living day after day. At some point everyone has to abandon security and just go on faith and trust. So live the cow people, live in the cow! Speaking of Keatings, they came for Christmas and New Years here to Luxembourg and we had an awesome time. It was horrible when they left. We've had a huge heapin' of closeness of family and love these last two months and it was hard to let go. I know this is sappier than my usual self, but its late, and heh, I'm just being honest. O.K. - So big news now...I know this is the first post in a long time...but its also the last (Here, that is. Soon this page will simply point you to the new domain). Tonight after an entire day of thinking and debating, we purchased hosting and tomorrow will break ground on our new official website. We spent the whole day not debating on the cost or hosting provider, but on what domain name to register. It was grueling. So many choices, so many already taken! We narrowed it down to several, I thought I'd share them. They all have a special meaning for our family:
Homestone.com - Taken Greenapple.com - Taken Theoldmill.com - Taken Tealight.com - Taken Livingston.com - Taken (We want something non-family specific, as we plan to have a site for each family there. So any derivatives of my name and Sarah's etc. was banned.) MyChalk.com - Available and one of my favorite poems of Sarah. ALMOST. Thisisthewebpage.com - Available but too tongue in cheek. Thetealight.com - Available - but while nonspecific and nice sounding, is a little too impersonal.
Final choice - Well, story here. There usually is with us. When I was in India, and Sarah in Virginia staying with her parents in 9-month pregnant waddling blues, Adam picked up some interesting habits from my father-in-law and his two uncles. One of which we have actually enjoyed is a dessert ritual, in which Adam raises his hands above his head and waves his arms shouting in his deepest voice, his Pappy's version of...."I WANT MY CAKE!"
So join us soon on our new website: iwantmycake.com
Cause, face it, we all want our cake and to eat it too.

"I am concerned that many of us are confused in our life’s travels with destinations, arrivals, stops, calls, stations, and assignments. It appears to me that some of us may be lost today because we think we have arrived."
This is still good, check it out.
