The Sheffield Youth Orchestra is a registered charity and a member of NAYO and was formed in 1964 to help young local musicians to gain real orchestral experience. It is managed by a council consisting of playing members and their parents.
The Orchestra meets weekly during term time, at Croft House in the centre of Sheffield, and usually gives three concerts a year, one at the end of each term.
A great variety of music is performed, with the Orchestra members themselves often suggesting works that they would like to play.
Regular activities include an annual residential weekend, which is highly enjoyable and important to the ongoing development of the Orchestra both musically and socially.
Membership is subject to audition and a modest annual subscription. The age range is approximately 13-18 years, but also includes a limited number of students who are in further education locally.
The standard required varies according to the instrument and the number of places available. A quick guide would be strings and brass grade 5+, and woodwind grade 6+. If you would like to join the Orchestra please send us your name, address, date of birth, the instrument that you play and the grade that you have attained.
