Why Always the Hero? Why Not the Villain?

Why Do They Always Lose?

There's been a certain question on my mind: "Why doesn't the antagonist ever win?" I've always seemed to wonder that. While growing up I always thought that the villains in books, TV shows, and comics almost always seem to have the better side of things. Just to name a few items, they almost always seem to have the interesting backgrounds, "logical" motives, cooler costumes, the ingenious minds, and the inventive gadgets. What tops that is they usually have a unique overall goal. I mean how neat would that be to really rule the world, or become really wealthy all in one shot? That would be nice. I suppose I could say that these guys just want something out of the ordinary, while the hero usually wants status quo. Now there are many different types of villains, but my object in writing is about the ones who haven't quite achieved their goals. For an example, why doesn't the Wile E. Coyote ever catch the Roadrunner? I mean, I really dislike that bird. I mean what good is it alive anyway?. In my opinion I think that the Coyote should win. If he wins he finally gets food. Most likely, I'm willing to bet that other people think so too.

Another example could be drawn from the question - "why are the most interesting plot lines to any comic book or TV series when the Villain almost wins?" These usually have the "to be continued" deal. Why can't they just let the villain win for once and make a spin-off of that villain instead of continue on with the same "hero always wins theme?" Hmmm…I guess there are a few flaws to that idea. I don't think a series on the Lex Luthor would be much fun anyways (that would probably be a short-lived series). Then again, I honestly think that if someone actually created some story where the hero kept winning, but then there was a time where the villain actually won…really won...now that would be interesting. Hmm...maybe the 7th Harry Potter Book will be something like that. Well, who knows, maybe the heroes in some storylines aren't really heroes…maybe they are the actual villain and the villain the actual hero. I wonder if there is a storyline like that…

Wow, this is actually getting kind of weird. I'm starting to sound like I'm a villain at heart. I'd better stop writing now before you know too much about me…
