Killing Hope: U. S. Global Interventions since World War II
Killing Hope: U. S. Global Interventions since World War II

Why do surveys consistently show that people around the world say they are fond of Americans, but dislike or hate the American government?  In this lively yet scholarly work, Blum et al reveal the suppression of democratic movements around the world, at the cost of millions killed and tortured by dictatorships which our government supplies with arms and money .  The authors argue that the goal is to prevent alternative models of democracy from emerging which are independent of the American economic sphere.  Important for understanding what your government is doing in your name without your knowledge, since the gory details of the American overthrow of democratic governments rarely make it into the mainstream press.

In Search of Enemies: A CIA Story
In Search of Enemies: A CIA Story

John Stockwell is the highest-ranking and most highly-decorated CIA officer to date to resign in protest of his countrys' actions in the Third World, saying he could no longer reconcile what he was asked to do with his Methodist Christian upbringing.  He argues U.S. policy in the Third World deliberately fosters instability in order to justify weapons expenditures in the post Cold War era.

Bitter Fruit: The Story of the American...

The American-backed genocide of over 200,000 mostly innocent civilians in Guatemala, mostly indigenous people, was one of this century's most brutal and least-reported episodes.  This classic tells the story of the overthrow of democratically-elected Jacobo Arbenz, which led to it.

Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower

Covers much of the same ground as "Killing Hope," above, but in a less exhaustive and more summary-like fashion.  Better for those who just want the skinny.

Rule of the Bone: A Novel
Rule of the Bone: A Novel

(Our lead piece this week remains Jason Halperin's Patriot Raid.  This is the true story what happened to an American citizen in his hometown of New York.  This could happen to you...)

Patriot Raid

April 29, 2003

A month ago I experienced a very small taste of what hundreds of South Asian immigrants and U.S. citizens of South Asian descent have gone through since 9/11, and what thousands of others have come to fear. I was held, against my will and without warrant or cause, under the USA PATRIOT Act......

FLASH! The Good Doctor Speaks, Hunter S. Thompson Message Intercepted...(text of short-wave message garbled, as follows:)  "See you tomorrow, folks. You haven't heard the last of me. I am the one who speaks for the spirit of freedom and decency in you. Shit. Somebody has to do it. We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world, a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us . . . No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we'll kill you...Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid little rich kids like George Bush? They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them."  (Transmission breaks up...text available in HST's new book, "Kingdom of Fear, Loathsome Secrets of a Star-Crossed Child in the Final Days of the American Century.")

Mass Graves in Guatemala
(The American news media dutifully describes in shocking and lurid images the mass graves now being found in Iraq.  Other mass graves around the world, however, don't get nearly as much attention.   This goes especially when the U.S. government helped create them, as it did with its support for paramilitary death squads in Guatemala in the 80s and 90s.  These links describe the forensic evidence.)

Star Wars Helpful Homing Beacons
(How many Americans know that test missiles in the Star Wars missile defense boondoggle are being equipped with homing beacons to make them easier to shoot down?  Shouldn't this be the lead line in any news article about Star Wars?)

(No need for conspiracy "theories," everything is in hardcopy in the government's own document rooms.  In the Seventies the army and the CIA admitted to subjecting U.S. citizens to diabolical experiments without their knowledge.  Here is an online copy of "Stock No. 052-070-04357-1", the 1977 U.S. Senate Hearing on MKULTRA.)

"The Central Intelligence Agency drugged American citizens without their knowledge or consent. It used university facilities and personnel without their knowledge. It funded leading researchers, often without their knowledge...."

Revolution
(Starring Al Pacino, Nastia Kinsky)

A gritty, realistic portrayal of our country's founding, with Al Pacino playing an initially reluctant revolutionary who becomes a patriot as he understands  the idea of America.  Best line, to a cold government bureaucrat telling him to tell his problem to the Congress, "no you're sitting there so I'll tell YOU." A little-known sleeper that is one of the best films on the subject.

Funny Farm
(Chevy Chase)
A hilarious must-see comedy for any aspiring writer!

The Thin Red Line
(Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, John Cusack)

Quite simply the best war movie ever made, thoughtful and eloquent, strips the glamour from war.  Gorgeous cinamatography, and incredibly tense action scenes.  If Terrance Malick never made another film his place would still be assured as a first-order director.

cover
Jacob's Ladder
(Tim Robbins)

Very stylish, well-made, and disturbing.  The hero, a Vietnem Veteran, thinks he is going crazy, and follows a trail of deception and lies by the army, which was using soldiers as human guinea pigs.  Artistic use of flashback and a powerful and unexpected ending.
