1698- Thomas Savery invents a steam-driven pump to
remove water from mine
shafts.
1701- Jethro Tull invents
the seed drill freeing agricultural labor and lowering crop prices
1709- Abraham Darby introduces coke smelting ( replacing
wood and charcoal) at his ironworks in
1712- Thomas Newcomen developes
the first workable steam-powered engine pumping water out of coal mines.
1733- John Ksy invents the Flying Shuttle greatly
accelerating the weaving process and begining the mechaniztion of the textile industry.
1740- Benjamin Huntsman discovers the crucible steel making process.
1759-The first Canal Act is passed by the British Parliament leading to the
construction of a nation-wide network of canals for the transport of industrial
supplies and finished goods.
1763- James Hargreaves invents the “Spinning Jenny “ greatly accelerating the weaving process
1764-Pierre Trosanquet develops a new method of road
building in
1765- James Watt introduces improvements to the Newcomen
steam engine .
1769- Richard Arkwright patents the Water Frame
bringing water power to the textile industry.
1770-The first satisfactory screw-cutting lathes were made by an English
instrument maker, Jesse Ramsden.
1733-The loom is of ancient origin, but the first modern invention to increase
its efficiency was the flying shuttle patented by John Kay.
1775- James Watt produces the first reliable, efficient steam engine.
1775 John Wilkinson invented the cylinder boring machine that made Watt’s steam
engine a practical source of power.

1779-Henry Maudslay designed the first all-iron
bridge constructed in
1785- Edmund Cartwright invented the power loom that mechanized the weaving
process
1786- John Fitch designed a dual, 12 paddle assembly
which was tested on the

1839- William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone installed a telegraph line along the
Great Western Railway and it was used initially to report on the position of
trains.
1851- Isaac Singer of
1860- The first really successful internal combustion engine was produced by a
French engineer, Etienne Lenoir.
1865- In
1876- Nikolaus Otto built the first engine on the
four stroke principle.
1903- Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first successful flight in a
heavier-than-air machine
