Do you think the school should take a stronger role in helping students keep up to date and stay in touch with their classes and professors?
Well ultimately it should be the students responsibility to find out whats going on in class and to contact their professor if they have questions. I think we instructors can help by being easy accessible.
How often are you contacted by students each week with questions?
On average, about 20 times per week
What is the most common way your students contact you outside of class?
By a visit during office hours.
Would you prefer students using electronic correspondence like email, or would you prefer office visitation?
It all depends on the extent of the question they have. If its a simple question about an assignment date or class information, it would be faster for the student to simply email me. But if they have a detailed question about something in class, then an office visitation is best.
Would you be willing to email out a bulk email to each of your classes summmarizing assignments and dates?
Well I do use blackboard to give out that information. So if there's any thing that I needed to change or clarify, I use Blackboard to send out a mass email to everyone in class. I don't email out assignments since they are already posted on blackboard.
Why did you choose to use Blackboard?
It seems to work really good and increases the communication between my class and myself. It also helps to decrease the phone calls, emails, and office visits(not that I mind of course).
What other benefits have you found?
Its a lot easie for students to get access to documents or files that they may have misplaces. They can also it to communicate with other students that they may not have any other means. It also makes the student take ownership if they miss out on information. They can't say well I didn't get the assignment because you weren't in your office or that I didn't return a phone call or email in time. I put all due assignments along with additional help on Blackboard for the students, not myself.
Have you found any problems using Blackboard?
No, and I've been using it for the past 5 years.
