Twisted Cinderella's--Happily Ever After?
Wednesday, 14 January 2004
Who does the dishes at Cinderellas house?
I wonder . . . who does the dishes at Cinderella?s house. What happened in that happily ever after? Does Prince Charming ever sit and play computer games while Cinderella fumes angrily over a hot stove, muttering about how if this is what the fairy Godmother had in mind she may as well have stayed with her stepmother? Does Cinderella?s kid ever puke on her shoes or finger-paint with her diaper?

I got my fairy tale. Prince Charming came in on a white horse and swept me away. Now what? That?s where the story ends. And where I am now doesn?t feel like a fairy tale anymore.

I mean I didn't expect sunshine and roses all the time, but a little Ozzie and Harriet would be nice. I want to get up in the morning make pancakes for breakfast, kiss my children lightly in the forehead, give them their breakfast and lunch and send them off to school. I want to kiss my husband at the front door and wave as he leaves for work and then great him with a smile and a beer at the door after work with supper in the oven.

Sadly, however, I do not live in Leave It to Beaverland. I don't know where I took the wrong turn but this isn't what I signed up for. I didn't know back then that I would getting up at some ungodly hour while my husband (who has only deigned it worthy to come to bed with me 2 hours earlier) lies peacefully sleeping. I didn't know that I would call home at lunch and I would have to worry about waking up my family. I didn't know that I would come home tired after work and dig right in cleaning up toys, shoes, coats, clothes and dishes until I get to the kitchen and make supper for everyone. And I didn't know that after working my tail off all week, I would get my paycheque and wonder if I should get food or pay bills with it because I can't do both.

Now, I will admit that Cinderella meets Leave it to Beaver may have been a little much to expect but for god's sake tell me that this isn't the only stop inbetween.

Oh well, Tune in next time when the 'Beav' and 'Whitey' get into mischief.
