Gregor Mendel was the man that started it all. Mendel was the first person to trace the characteristics of successive generations of a living thing. To add to it all, he wasn't even a scientist! He was a monk who taught natural science to highschoolers. Having a love of nature Mendel always wondered how plants got their distinct characteristics. With the use of pea plants, Mendel tested several different characteristics of pea plants. For example, he tested the color trait. By taking to parent plants, one being red and the other white, he bread them and out came a generation with a 3:1 ratio! This concluded that red was dominant to white. Of course after doing and experiement once, you have to repeat it. took seven years to cross and score the plants to the thousand to prove the laws of inheritance!
