The so-called digital divide is actually several
gaps in one. There is a technological divide – great gaps in infrastructure. There is a content divide. There is a gender divide, with women and girls
enjoying less access to information technology than men and boys. This can be
true of rich and poor countries alike.
United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan Statement to the World Summit on the Information
Society, Geneva, 10 December 2003
The 2006 Women and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Taskforce:
Re-Engineering Development: Engendering ICTs is the premier international
taskforce developed to bring distinguished leaders from around the globe to
address the under-representation of women in the field of ICT. The
goal of the meeting is to launch a Task Force of global leaders and
practitioners to create synergy in efforts to increase women’s full participation in ICTs,
from access and use to literacy and leadership. The network will also develop
indicators and monitoring processes to enable the global community to understand
what is working and should be supported, what is not working, and what gaps in
services, support, or resources are missing. The goal is to ensure that the
participation of women in education and employment in ICT globally is measurably
and significantly increased within five years.
The 2006 Women and ICT Taskforce is by
invitation only.
