life on the blacktop

Some footage of my usual streets...^

________

Got the willis painted and put together... sweeet!

Dahon Helios folder on way to work in Scotch Plains, NJ, March 2011. Bike commuting STILL rocks!

Marin mtb going for winter a road ride, Sunday 2-6-11. Roads were clear but wet, and all the scenery -- as ya can see -- snowy.

The view from the top -- past Hill 27, Sunday Oct. 31, 2010...

Silly bike from Oct. 18's gathering behind the bike shop. Our participation in the Bucks County covered Bridges ride was called this year on account of rain...

Cannondale SR400 from the 1980's(?) that I picked up the other day. [9-5-09]

Fathers day ride, 2009. 80-odd miles. It was raining when we set out. Cleared by midride. Some steep hills...

....and amazing views. That's Round Valley there.

The long and winding road. 6-7-09: did my very first century. Worked out to 112 miles by the time I rode home from the shop.

I swore afterwards I didn't want to see the biek for a weeek. I rode to work the next day...

by the hotel in Somerville, Memorial Day, 2009, for the Tour of Somerville bike race. That's a 1970's Peugeot UO-8 and yeh, my jersey is wool.

Racers making good speed at the Tour of Somerville, '09.

Riding the road bike at last, post surgery, late february '09.

Brazing modern cable stops onto the Willis...! That's Steve at The Bike Stand doing the torch work.

Specialized mountainbike done up as a hybrid. Slick tires, 26" rims. Taken at the convenience store across the street from the bike shop. This is what I'm riding post-surgery til the doctor tells me I can use my shoulder reaching road handlebars....

Winter helmet [ProTec], plus stickers. The Bike Stand, January '09

Tempo fix, with new bar and stem, new grips, bmx brake lever, new front brake, and my winter helmet.

Reload small civilian

Masi after a decent ride Sunday 11-09-08.

Old Army Rd. and the hairpin turn (10-26-08). I did the entire hill basically standing up, without using a triple. With a tear in my shoulder joint. Yeh for having more determination than fitness or sense!

Covered Bridges Ride Oct. 19 2008.

Me riding the Masi 9-28-08, it's first daylight ride since I built it up two days previous on a Friday night. I took some parts off the Trek 1000 roadbike to build it up.

I took the Trek roadbike to North Carolina for a week in September '08. Got in over 200 miles. Some nice headwinds...

And some nice scenic roads...

The Kryptonite chain I got dirt cheap at the lbs in exchange for helping remove it from a customer's bike. Those old locks can really be picked with a Bic pen. Using a new lock on the chain myself, of course...

The view from the top...

Scotch Plains Aug. 16 '08 after going up Hill Hollow, a steep local hill, on the Fuji track.

Back to Madison, NJ...

6-15-08 - some really big hills...

Fathers day ride - 6-15-08. Killing the hill... or myself?

The far green mountains on the father's day ride. Over 70 miles and some steep hills.

Raleigh in the Swamp.

Took the folding fixed gear to MA.

5 Boro bike tour NYC May 4, 2008

The crowd after the V Narrows bridge...

The Schwinn fixed gear at the ferry at the end.

One armed rider. I made it up and down some local hills today for a little over 20 miles, 3 days after dislocating my right shoulder. With one arm.

Sunday 4-13-08, after 52 miles

3-30-08 -- 53 miles with lots of hills. Fun.

Bike leg. This is what you get from riding a fixed gear daily...

Easter ride, '08. Much fun.

Nishiki frame with Marinoni fork. Fixed gear roadbike with semi- track set up. 48/17 for now. Only paid part was the modern seatpost to replace the steel one at 25.8mm diameter. Chances are, this will be the bike I take to NYC for the 5 Boro '08...

Schwinn cyclecross/touring rig at the train station...

New project: homebuilt cyclecross bike on an old discarded but sound frame; 8-speed in the back, 42 tooth chainring up front. Dual cantilever brakes. Fun...

Just another commute...

2-22-08. Big snow storm hits NJ. I rode in it. The trek mountainbike is running a freewheel although the fixed cog is still on the other side.

Before riding home from Friday Night at The Bike Stand...!

Fixed gear by the Cafe, in Basking Ridge, NJ...

2-3-08. 40-odd miles with the dudes from the shop, then some more on my own for over 55 miles. Midway through the ride we went up this long winding hill. It was fun!

Fuji track, January '08. Changes include a 16 tooth cog instead of the 15, a old-school Vetta seat instead of the Flite, and Soma track bars, 38 width. The new rear tire is blue instead of previous red, a Hutchinson which rides nice. Oh, and the Trackstar sticker...

It was colder Sunday morning...

Morning Glory Rd, from the top coming home from Sunday's ride. On the Bike Stand website conditions this morning were summed up as follows: "Temperature didn't rise above 18 degrees Fahrenheit for the duration of the whole ride. Windchill took it to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit." Cold enough for ya?

Trek singlespeed/fixed gear bike, after re-installation of knobby tires, platform pedals, rear brake and a headset adjustment.

Lemond - with 42 front chainring replacing the 39 and wider bars (big 44's). That's old school cork tape on there too! ;)

Riding back up the hill to get home, 12-30-07. It worked out to be 45 miles.

The view from the cockpit as we're almost done - end of a ride at the end of the year. I'm fallin' off the back but it's good cause I hung on that long with a beat up leg; I landed on my hip on the way to the shop and slid like a hockey puck. The same black ice that took me out also propped an SUV up like a seesaw. Ouch.

Bianchi pista after a nice coat of grey paint to protect all that chrome.

Schwinn Sprint, 42/17 with flat bars, 4 lights, and rear fender. My beater bike. And fun to throw around on the road.

I know, I need to lose the gut. Fat men represent!

Schwinn Tempo (48/20 gearing) post-ride after a long haul through slush and snow [I cleaned it off]. Had to wring out my socks lucky I didn't get frostbite.

Chrome!

Schwinn Tempo, memorial to a kid killed riding on the street, and the truck that ran me off said street back in Summer of '07 -- in one photo. The word, I believe, is irony.

Downtube shifters on the Lemond.

Winter bike, a junkfind Schwinn Sprint running 48/20 (2.4 to 1 gear ratio) -- and the bike I just learned how to skid on. Yes, that is snow under it... it snowed today (damn weatherman)...

Some of these parts later went to my Tempo...

The fuji, now with Silver cranks and a Thompson Elite seatpost. Yay! It now looks as cool as it rides! Pictured at 42/15 gearing which is 2.8 to 1 gearing -- a bit steep and I may drop it down to 42/16 or so.

Me and the bike with new duds. Marinoni frame with track width chain and 45/17 gearing, and homemade cycling knickers. Department store cargo pants, cut to just below the knee, folded over and sewed. Way Cheaper than those nuevo rich fools that spend a months rent on cyclign specific baggy pants!

Speaking of fools... The dumb driver that nearly made me give up the ghost on 11/30/07 in Scotch Plains. made a left right at me and then had the unmitigated gall to insist that I was somehow in the wrong. F-ing idiot. The only good thing is she was as gutless as she was stupid. She kept saying "I'll call the cops I'll call the cops." So I rode my track bike over to the police station. first they heard of it. I almost wish she'd called the cops because then I'd have her name and could file a complaint against her. Is driving while moronic a crime? No, but nearly killing someone is careless driving, right?

One for the record books. Up Johnston Dr in Watchung in 7:33. On 39/15 fixed gear.

Johnston Dr - another angle.

The Fuji would make a nice poster too...

New fix, a Lygie road frame converted by the previous owner and now built up by yours truly. It was used to messenger in NYC hence the Trackstar shop decal...

The Raleigh waiting for the crowd on Sunday morning

Fuji track -- now with red Specialized rear tire and black Origin 8 track grips!

Fuji too -- looking up from the blacktop.

Covered Bridges Ride.... Pre-ride, Oct. 14, 2007: Around 6am it was just me and the Bianchi Campion D' Italia roadbike. Soon we were on our way to 100 kilometers...

On top of the world, and "the hill" - maybe 20 miles into the 100k.

One thing you see during those 100k is a LOT of fields. Hey, I think that's where they filmed "children of the corn"...

My Bianchi chillin' underneath a tree at a rest stop.

Hey, isn't that one of those covered bridges?

The crowd at the end.

A fast Sunday morning...

The Raleigh

A fun local hill...

My Raleigh from Steve at the Bike Stand at rest at the Far Hills Deli 10/07/07. I did 50-odd miles that morning. In the background are the other guys' way cooler bikes including (tho it may not be visible) a Spectrum. A few guys didn't show up so the Land Shark isn't present.

Up the bridge into town...

The Trek 1000 converted to trackbike hits Atlantic Beach, North Carolina for summer of '07. The fence in the background surrounds the berm of a civil war fort. Blackbeard's ship is apparently sunk on the other side of the island...

Messenger bag during a stop mid-ride. That's the underside of the train tracks in Madison, NJ.

Tour of Somerville 2007

Pista at the Madison train station, '07

A Sunday ride, taken from the Lemond's cockpit...

Yes, I took a fix to North Carolina in 2006 too...

Shadow bike...

'06 5 Boro bike tour of New York City! The Bridge.

^The great NJ outback. This is a picturesque place to get a flat, if you have to get a flat. On the other hand, there ain't no one around to help...

The lone rider with his messenger bag... The small Reload civilian. I have the full size and this one. They both rock. I mean they rock like Springsteen. Or Warren Zevon. Seriously.

Another view of the ReLoad...

^ Bike lanes: The town got it half right. Now, about those leaf piles...

^ fixed gear Dahon folding bike and office fax machine. This was fun...

Ross on Morris Ave

Lemond roadbike in it's old configuration; 53/39 up front instead of the current 42 tooth chainring... narrower bars, and a shorter stem and different seat. I put the original seat back on, got a slightly longer stem (that coincidentally matches the speckled gray/silver paintjob, peeled the seat tube decal as it was ripping, and made some other minor changes since then.. but this thing is still fun...
