Pilots had great stability and flexibility in the air, unlike land fights where bombs and poisonous gas often render heroism obsolete.
During the early phase of the war. Planes were not used for air battles. Although many contries including Germany, Britain, and US had over 200 planes, it didn't seem possible, with the technology then, to utilyse the planes for air combat. It wasn't till after the war that the planes advanced greatly and became the star during the 2nd war.
The first mayjor aircraft used was the Zepplin. Developed by the Germans, the Zepplin was used to scout enemy grounds.
