China Uneasy As Japan Expands Role of Military
Topic: International Affairs
japan expands role of military, the whitehurst blog

The U.S. is pleased and looking forward to a closer relationship with Japan after that country's parliament recently passed legislation to expand the role of the military.  The new laws will give Japan the leeway to act in international conflicts -- even when Japan hasn't been attacked -- for the first time since World War II when a constitution was adopted that restricted military action.  The move, which is meant to allow flexibility in supporting allies, has incited protest in Japan and elicited caution from China.  It should be remembered that China is engaged in a military building program, and has its own designs for the regionCLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

South African White Supremacists Training For Race War (Video)
Topic: International Affairs
south africa afrikaner resistance movement, the whitehurst blog, steven whitehurst

Nelson Mandela wanted a South Africa where all could live together in peace and prosperity.  A group of White supremacists in the country is determined to stand against that ideal; instead wanting a return to the days of apartheid.  The Afrikaner Resistance Movement (ARM) is operating training camps -- replete with racist brainwashing -- in preparation for a race war.  The goal is a separate state for White South Africans.  2,000 people have been through the "Kommando" training program in the last two years.

Russia Launches Cyber Attack Against U.S., The White House
Topic: International Affairs

It was previously known that hackers had breached computer systems in the U.S. State Department.  Now it's being reported by CNN that hackers also breached computer systems in the White House, and gained access to the schedule of President Obama's movements.

With an increasingly hostile Russia on the world stage, such sensitive information could easily have found its way into the hands of terrorists.  We -- meaning the West in general, and the U.S. in particular -- need to recognize the Putin-led Russian government as a threat and an enemy.  The Russians have physically attacked Georgia and Ukraine in recent years, and now they've launched cyber attacks against America.

Response:

*Increased sanctions against the Russian economy

*Move towards accepting Ukraine and Georgia into NATO

*Arm Ukraine and Georgia to better defend against future Russian invasions

*Cyber warfare against the Russian government and the country's financial systems

If the Russians really want to be our enemies, let's treat them as such!

The Spratly Islands: Naval Arms Race In The South China Sea
Topic: International Affairs
the whitehurst blog, south china sea dispute, spratly islands disputeMap courtesy of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency

There is a territorial dispute simmering that has the possibility of breaking out into open war.   At present Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam all have claims to part or all of the Spratly Islands.   These islands, and their associated maritime geological features (reefs, banks, cays, etc.) are located in the South China Sea.

The Spratly Islands are deemed desirable for a number of reasons.  First, they are thought to house vast reserves of oil and natural gas.  The islands also sit in a major area for world fishing.  Lastly, they are in one of the busiest areas for commercial shipping, and are located on major trade routes to Northeast Asia.

Based on these reasons, countries in the vicinity of the islands seem to be preparing for a naval war.  With the distances involved from the countries in question, naval ships will have to be used to take and hold claims in any hot conflict.  To this end, a naval arms race is in effect:

*Malaysia has ordered 6 Gowind-class stealth frigates, and is adding next generation Kedah-class patrol vessels.

*The Philippines is looking to add amphibious assault ships and frigates to its naval force.  There are also plans to put its first submarine into service by 2020.

*Taiwan has a 20-year modernization plan covering the acquisition of 4 new frigates, new amphibious warfare ships, and 4-8 new submarines.

*Vietnam has purchased 6 Improved Kilo-class submarines from Russia, 4 Gepard-class frigates from the Russians, and 2 Sigma-class corvettes from the Netherlands.

*China is engaged in a massive naval building program.  New stealth destroyers, frigates, nuclear and diesel submarines; and the country has put its first aircraft carrier -- the Liaoning -- into service.  There are plans to operate 3 aircraft carrier battle groups by 2020, with 2 planned for operations in the South China Sea.  Also, in 2013, China started dredging in the Spratly Islands, creating new islands from reefs.  When the project is completed, China will have her first military airstrip in the islands from  which to project military air power.

Falklands War Part Two?
Topic: International Affairs

Could we be seeing a build up to a Falklands War part 2??? Argentina has never given up its claim to the Malvinas Islands (Falklands); while Britain still maintains a military force there to protect it from Argentina. Now new jets have been added to the mix at a time when the U.K. has no aircraft carriers to provide consistent air cover to her forces. Britain is scheduled to commission a new carrier by 2020, while Argentina could have her new fighter jets (the Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Thunder - Pakistan's home made Fighter Jet) a little bit sooner. Britain has limited numbers of jets based in The Falklands.  That would set up a quantity vs. quality air battle, with larger numbers of the less capable JF-17,  a generation 3+ fighter, battling smaller numbers of the more capable 4.5 generation Eurofighter.  Keep an eye on this brewing conflict in the South Atlantic.

Future Wars: Falklands War Part 2
Topic: International Affairs

FUTURE WARS: THE FALKLANDS WAR PART 2

After winning the Falklands War against Argentina in the early 80's, Britain has made sure to beef up defenses on and around the disputed Falkland Islands. The English have deployed the 4.5 generation Eurofighter jets, and the Type 45 air defense destroyer to the area. Argentina has not given up claims to the territory, but its military --due to lack of funding-- has not been in a position to offer a credible threat. That may be chang...ing. Argentina is now in talks with China for the JF-17/FC-1 fighter. While it's not on par with the Eurofighter, it would give Argentina advanced anti-ship capability, precision guided attack capability, and beyond visual range combat capability. Chinese missiles would also probably be part of any deal. Stay tuned!

ISRAEL GETTING READY FOR WAR WITH IRAN

The U.S. and Israel have just completed an arms deal which will give the Jewish state a number of systems to help in an attack on Iran's nuclear sites. Israel will get KC-135 tankers to extend the range of attack aircraft. Also in the package are anti radiation missiles for use against radar systems; AESA radar upgrades for their current fleets of F-15's and F-16's; the V-22 Osprey; and a future supply of F-35 stealth jets.
