Sunday Suburban Shooting: At Least 1 Wounded
Topic: Personal Stories

Calumet City, Illinois:  At Approximately 3:15p.m. a young man was shot on Yates Ave. near the intersection with State St.

I was watching the NBA Playoffs when 2 loud gunshots rang out!  The blasts were so close to my building that I heard the echoes reverberating off of the brickwork.  I got up to look outside, and I saw a young man bleeding, and rolling prone into the street.  He was screamng for help, and trying to get cars to stop -- and no one would!  They all just drove right by him!  I screamed for my daughter!  She got on the phone to call 911; while I threw on my clothes to go help.  After seeing that callous shit from those car drivers, there was no way in hell that I was going to sit back and do nothing while he died!  I ran outside with the intention of applying direct pressure until an ambulance could arrive.  When I got to the young man he'd  rolled all the way across the street, and into a busy stripmall parking lot.   Officer Dimitroff of the Calumet City Police Department was on scene when I got there.  A bloodtrail led from the lawn on my side to the victim's eventual ending spot.  No suspects are in custody.

Because I was there the police wanted a statement from me.  My daughter is so scared about gang retaliation because I went to help; and, because people saw me talking to the law.  I'm not thinking about that!  Firstly, I don't know anything about what happened, who did it or why.  Secondly, I'M NOT GOING TO STOP TRYING TO BE BETTER THAN HUMAN BECAUSE OTHERS WANT TO ACT WORSE THAN ANIMALS!!!  If I see someone needing help, I'm going to help if I can.

Happy Birthday Princess:  My Greatest Honor Is Being Your Father!
Topic: Personal Stories

In the vastness of the cosmos stars are born constantly.  I've never been much of a stargazer, but I understood the awe of such an occurrence  on April 22, 1998 at 2:21 a.m.  That was the moment a star was born in my personal galaxy!  From that moment on, I've felt nothing but love and gratitude towards my daughter:  Love just for being my daughter...and gratitude for the opportunity to have a daughter like her.  Don't get me wrong, she's not perfect!  However, she's definitely a young lady that I can be proud of...AND I AM!

FATHERLY PLAN A:  With today being her 19th birthday, I wanted to do something nice.  I'd planned to make breakfast this morning (blueberry waffles, sausage links and hash browns), but by the time I woke up she was already gone!  TIME FOR FATHERLY PLAN B!!!

FATHERLY PLAN B:  When she got home this afternoon  I casually gave her some money.  She said that she didn't need it, but I slid it under her bedroom door anyway!  I played it cool for the rest of the day -- UNTIL DINNER!  Knock-Knock (at her door)!!  When she opened it I was standing there (in complete darkness) holding a flame.  I told her to come with me, and I led her to our pitch-dark kitchen.  Suddenly the lights came on...and VOILA!!!  I was making her favorite --Pork Hotlinks in bbq sauce!  Next to that:  A bag of her favorite chips!  Next to that:  A large order of something else she loves -- JJ's French fries topped in lemon pepper and mild sauce!  Lastly, I turned my back on her!  When I turned back around, I was handing her Red Velvet Cake while singing "Happy Birthday." I can't sing worth a damn, but it's the thought that counts!  The look on her face was priceless!

Every year she sees her birthday like most young people do:  A time to celebrate and further spread ones wings.  What she doesn't know is that I celebrate her birthday just like it's my own.  I don't go out and party or anything, but I celebrate nonetheless!    When April 22nd rolls around it's a yearly reminder of the best day of my life! It's the day that MY STAR WAS BORN!   Funny thing is, before she was even conceived, I actually had a star named after her mother.  In the personage of my daughter, Bajani Whitehurst, I got my own star in return.  Happy Birthday Princess!  I LOVE YOU!!!

Bad Airline Service: New Light Shines On Old Problem
Topic: Personal Stories

The treatment of airline passengers is in the news right now.  United Airlines' treatment of Dr. David Dao -- the passenger who was dragged off of a plane, and sustained injuries at the hands of airline personnel in the process -- has been all over the news.  Now, another story of passenger mistreatment has surfaced.  The sad fact of the matter is customer service is definitely an issue on planes -- and elsewhere.  Even sadder is the fact that it's nothing new!  Just as with the flood of video showing police murders of African-Americans hitting the airwaves, this too is a long existing problem that has only been acknowledged because of the omnipresence of the cellphone camera.

When I was in my twenties I vacationed in Las Vegas with my then fiance'.  We stayed at a place called Bob Stupak's Vegas World, and had a really nice time; that is -- UNTIL THE RETURN FLIGHT HOME on America West Airlines.  I was really sick and needed to use a restroom.  We were flying coach, and the bathrooms weren't working.  As a result, a number of passengers asked to use the restrooms in First Class.  There was no problem, that is until I asked to use it.  My fiance' and I were both denied access to the toilets in First Class -- and it just so happens that we were the only Black people asking for access!  In other words the stewardess let White passengers use the toilets but not us!  We didn't have ubiquitous cellphone cameras back then to prove what happened.  I complained once I got back to Chicago, but nothing ever happened.

All I can say is -- relative to airline service:  Keep the number to a good lawyer close, and a cellphone camera even closer.  Make Them Pay!!!

The Gym Shoe/Jim Shoe Sandwich: Another Chicago Original!

The Gym Shoe/Jim Shoe Sandwich:  Another Chicago Original

Chicago is a place with an extremely rich culinary history.  So many good foods have come from the Windy City:  Chicago Hot Links, Deep Dish Pizza, Stuffed Pizza, Pizza Puffs, Chicago-Style Hotdogs, Garrett's Popcorn, Maxwell Street Polish Sausages, Twinkies, and so on.  One more tasty morsel to add to that illustrious list is the Gym Shoe (Jim Shoe) Sandwich!

The Gym Shoe is a submarine sandwich with roast beef, corned beef, gyro meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, giardiniera and gyro sauce (Tzatziki sauce).  I didn't know anything about the sandwich until I saw it featured on a "Chicago's Best" episode.  They recommended Stony Sub on 84th & Stony Island in Chicago; but I was lucky enough to find a place in my neighborhood that makes it:  Sandwich Castle 2458 W. State St., Burnham, Illinois (708) 862-8050.

Sandwich Castle serves theirs with mustard and mayo, so I asked for gyro sauce as a substitute.  It also didn't come with giardiniera peppers; but, I'm sure I could've asked for some.  In any event, it was VERY GOOD!  And, a large Gym Shoe sub with fries was less than $7!  I'm not even a big submarine sandwich eater, and I already want more!  If you haven't tasted a "Gym Shoe" then you definitely want to put it on your gastric bucket list!

21st Century Epidemic
Topic: Varied Thoughts

21st CENTURY EPIDEMIC

I remember when AIDS was a major epidemic in the 80's.  It's 2017 and we have a new epidemic to wrestle with; but it's not coming from the medical world this time.  Currently we are dealing with ailments of the character on a mass level:  Lies and Selfishness!  When I was young one of the first things I was told about adulthood was that an adult takes responsibility for what they do -- right or wrong.   SOOO many people in society today would rather lie or pass the buck as opposed to owning up to what they've done.  Lies are the great coverall today.  And then, there's the selfishness.  People today will come to you in the guise of a friend or lover, but will use you up and toss you away like garbage as soon as you have nothing else for them to take.  I'm sure that I'm not the only one who's tried to start a relationship with someone, only to find out that relationship in that person's mind meant everything was about or for them.  You tell someone you love them and give them your last dollar when they ask; but they won't even give you "A" dollar when you're in need!  And before anyone says anything about religion or needing a god to fix things, the liars and users I've run into have been Christians!  Talk about what you need to do to fix your spirituality all day long; then turn right around and enact deception and selfishness when it suits them.  Hypocrisy!!! Society today would be so funny if it wasn't so sad.  We even have a president now who has a standing practice of not accepting responsibility for what he does; and he tells multiple lies weekly to a world audience.  Trump is just an example of what society is today, he's not the cause.  When people voted for him they voted for what they saw in the mirror every morning.

Every time one of these users does what they do, there is a person on the other side who suffers the damage.  If society is this way in 2017, what will things be like in 2050 or 2060...hopefully I won't be around to find out.  All I can say is:  When someone comes into your life bearing lies and selfishness, turn them right around and show them the way out.

Murderer Who Fed Girlfriend To Dogs Signs Football Contract
Topic: Crime

Brazilian footballer Bruno Fernandes de Souza recently signed a contract to return to the sport, after serving time in prison for the torture and murder of his ex-girlfriend (mother of his youngest child).   Eliza Samudio went missing in June 2010, after suing the married de Souza for child support.  In July of that year he was arrested, along with two other men and one another one of his ex-girlfriends.  It was learned that Ms. Samudio had been tortured and strangled, before being cut into pieces and fed to hungry dogs.   Her kidnapped child was found with de Souza's wife.  De Souza was convicted in 2013 and sentenced to a 22 years in prison.  However, he was released early in February 2017, and recently signed a deal to renew his career.  In an interview de Souza said:

What happened, happened. I made a mistake, a serious one, but mistakes happens in life - I'm not a bad guy.

Move Over America, China Enters Exclusive Stealth Club...And Is Bringing Friends!
Topic: Military

J-20 Black Eagle (photo credit: Daily Star)

Defense planners concerned with the Asian-Pacific Theater were sent scrambling last week as China announced the introduction of its J-20 stealth fighter.  Prior to that move, the only country in the world with stealth aircraft in active military service was the United States.  The U.S. had long held a monopoly on stealth, beginning with experimental stealth use on the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane.  Although not a stealth jet, some stealth concepts were applied to the design.  True stealth combat aircraft first came into public view with the F-117 and B-2 during the 1980's and 90's.  Following the introduction of these bombers, stealth fighter jets came into being with the F-22 (2005) and F-35 (2015).  Enter the Chinese J-20!

It must be noted that the J-20 benefited from espionage.  Chinese hackers gained access to American stealth  technology from both the F-22 and F-35 programs, and this stolen tech was used in the J-20 design.   The jet is built for long range and carries multiple weapons.    It is expected that the US. Navy and its aircraft carrier force will have to deal with  its presence during any future conflict that may arise in the disputed South China Sea region.

With American stealth aircraft first seeing action during the 80's in Panama, American forces have held a monumental advantage in the airspace above conflicts for decades.  China just changed that calculus, while making itself   a player in future air combat.  In addition to the J-20, China also has the stealthy J-31 in development for EXPORT!   And it doesn't end there:  China is rumored to have a stealth bomber in development; and a number of other countries -- including Russia and Iran -- already have stealth programs underway.  As a result, U.S. pilots could soon be skirmishing with enemy stealth jets over multiple conflict zones.

MOVIE REVIEW: CAROL
Topic: Visual Media

CAROL
LESBIAN LOVE IN THE 1950'S

At a time when there's so little worth seeing on Cable Television, I was pleasantly surprised today by movie dealing with forbidden love.  "CAROL" focuses on two women who develop a romantic relationship during the ultra-conservative 1950's.  Cate Blanchett gives a great performance in the title role!  "Carol" is an older experienced lesbian who is dealing with a failed marriage, and an accompanying child custody battle.  Rooney Mara plays the role of "Therese"; a young woman just beginning to understand her sexual identity.  The two meet and a moving story of their evolving love ensues!   In addition to the story line and acting being top-notch, the cinematography and direction need to be praised.   This is a really well made movie -- with social relevance -- and I highly recommend seeing it.   5 Stars!!!
