In 2008 Barack Obama achieved the unachievable when he was elected to be the United States of America's first African-American President. This in a country that was built on slavery and genocide! In 2016 another unimaginable historic political milestone was reached when Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in her bid to become the first female President of the United States. This in a country where the archaic evils of sexism and gender inequality continue to thrive in the 21st Century! Before these history makers achieved what they did, there was a person who simultaneously laid the groundwork for both. HER name is Lenora Fulani!
She was born in Chester, Pennsylvania on April 25, 1950. After a childhood that included losing her father at an early age, Lenora went on to receive a scholarship to Hofstra University in 1967. Following her graduation in 1971, she went on to Master's Degree from Columbia University's Teachers College; and a PhD from City University of New York in Psychology. Having been involved with Black Nationalist politics in college, and later working in the Black Community itself, she melded the two. Seeing neither the Democratic or Republican Parties as true friends of the masses, she began working to empower people of color, women, and other oppressed groups through the establishment of a viable independent third party. Dr. Fulani soon rose to leadership in the New Alliance Party, a third political party in New York that described itself as a Black-led Multiracial party. In 1988, heading the New Alliance Party's ticket, Dr. Lenora Fulani became the first African-American and the first woman to get on the general election ballot in all fifty states during her campaign for President. She was also the first to qualify for federal matching funds. With Rev. Jesse Jackson having run that same year in the Democratic Primary, Dr. Fulani coined the phrase "Two Roads Are Better Than One." Facing the entrenched two-party system with its monopoly on debates and media coverage -- as well as the her own African-American Community's self-imposed political enslavement to the Democratic Party and its candidates -- she still received over 200,000 votes.
Following the 1988 election, Dr. Fulani continued her political work and gained notable allies such as Minister Louis Farrakhan and Rev. Al Sharpton. I myself worked with her political organization. In 1991, when visiting New York for a meeting with a publisher, I had the pleasure of attending one of Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network rallies in Harlem (PS 175) with her. I was also asked to serve in her honor guard when she visited the Nation of Islam in Chicago. Regrettably I wasn't able to make it. In 1992 she again campaigned for the Presidency unsuccessfully. She continued her community and political work; but, years later, her support in the Black Community took a major hit when -- in her quest to establish a third party -- she briefly allied herself with Pat Buchanan during his presidential campaign.

With an eye towards creating an army of "Super Soldiers," Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin initiated a program to create ape-human hybrids. Theoretically this would create soldiers with near-human intelligence -- enabling them to be controlled and directed -- with the additional benefits of ape strength and agility. During the mid 1920's an early genetic scientist, Dr. Ilya Ivanov, was given a $10,000 grant to begin the process. Ivanov traveled to Africa to obtain a number of suitable simians; and, after failing to find human females to participate in his experiments there, he returned to the Soviet Union where he obtained a volunteers. His methodology involved impregnating these women with ape sperm. Then,If all went to plan, the resulting births would be the beginnings of a force leading to Soviet Communist world domination. When these experiments failed the program was shut down.
Fast forward to today, almost 100 years later! With the level of today's scientific knowledge of genetic manipulation -- could human soldiers step onto a battlefield in the near future and come face to face with PLANET OF THE APES -- FOR REAL! With spider-goats already being created for military purposes, how far behind can a "Monkey Man" be...

When I moved to Harvey, IL I was exposed to a community full of opportunity and activity for kids. One thing that was available was Little League Baseball. I didn't know a thing about the game! The person who introduced me to it was Andre Hebert. Andre was a pure athlete and a great player at that stage. It wasn't uncommon for him to pitch no-hitters. He got me interested and talked me into playing Little League. Harvey actually had two leagues for young players: Major and Minor Leagues. Since I knew absolutely nothing I started in Minor League, and that's where I met Mr. Heimlich!
I never met or knew my father. My mother's husband at the time signed up to be one of the coaches, but he was rarely there and NEVER worked with me on my game. That's where Mr. Heimlich stepped in! He worked with me on my game, gave me tips; and, maybe most importantly, he gave me encouragement. He was a wonderful coach, a wonderful person to interact with young children in the game; and, through his activity with the team ("The Harvey S.W.A.T.") I met my teammate and lifelong friend Jim Heimlich (his son) and Margie Auman (his daughter) who was and is one of the sweetest people on the planet. I was also always welcome at his home, which was right down the street.
After that season, where I got zero hits, I took time off to learn and get better. I played with Andre Hebert after school, and with Parrish Luvertsky Walker and Hiram Walker before school everyday. After a year or two away from organized baseball I came back -- this time to Major League. The difference was dramatic and immediate! I was one of the best hitters on my team! At this time I played for the Harvey Elks. Mr. Heimlich and his son Jim Heimlich were with one of the best teams in the league: Big Frank's. My team didn't win very much. When our teams played we came up against one of the hardest throwers in the league: Bob Skonicki. He threw so hard that you could hear the ball sizzle in the air; and he was tall and intimidating on the mound. That intimidation shut down most of the hitters on my team; but I wanted the challenge. When I came up to bat there were two outs. I took the first pitch to get a read on his speed. The second pitch he threw went got hit, and went into centerfield for a base hit. Jim Heimlich was playing second base and I remember him diving for the ball. I stood on first base while Skonicki struck out the next batter, and the game was over. I was going back to my dugout when Mr. Heimlich stopped me. "Whitehurst, you've become one helluva ballplayer" he said. That stuck with me! I finished the season hitting .368.
Later I moved on to Babe Ruth League, where in my second season there I hit .450 and led the league in home runs. On the strength of that season I ended up getting an invitation letter from Coach Richard "itch" Jones, the coach of Southern Illinois University, to tryout. However, by the time I enrolled at SIUC, I had lost my love for the game. I had a girlfriend at the time and a lot on my plate. I never tried out for the team, and never even played again, but much of the success I had was due to Mr. Heimlich. Through him I gained confidence, got to meet great friends in his son and daughter, and got to meet a great family. Thank you so much Mr. Heimlich, I really appreciate all that you did for me.
