The moment my older brother declared purple to be his favourite colour, I dropped it as part of my colour whee!. Over the years, this feisty younger sister would only warm up to the idea of purple when I developed a taste for ube ice cream and halaya.
The passion for purple ignited further in my years at MiriamCollege. Each member of our barkada adopted one colour to help express each individual’s identity. One chose pink, another took a liking to blue, one stuck with green; and I, I found purple anew. I easily grew a connection to what the colour meant: cool mystery¦ a certain shallowness that turns deep with a wink¦ the expression of both womanhood and humanity. During this time, my growing fascination translated into purple pens, clothes, and knick-knacks and trinkets of all size and shape. I would buy items in three's: used one for myself, and had the two stored with all the other purple pairs collected during the first three years of college. So there it was, a growing purple connection and a growing purple collection!
In December of 1999, I took part in a bazaar cum fund-raiser for the construction of Ateneo’s Church of the Gésu. I thought it was a good time to share the purple items in my collection. The booth had a name—‘Something Purple’—and was, naturally, wildly decorated with purple. We had balloons, luminous stars, and a killer lavender backdrop set with lilac tulles and silk! We were the most well-decorated stall and had quite an impact to most of the patrons of the bazaar. Ubos ang paninda sa Day One! I never thought many people loved the same colour I did.
Due to insistent public demand, after the last day of the bazaar” Titan, Mom and I; rented a stall at the FBRArcadeBuilding in Katipunan, LoyolaHeights, Quezon City. This collaboration of labour and love extended the life of Something Purple; My Good friends, Chelle and Maymay took turns in looking after the shop (for free!) because I already had a permanent job at the time.
The dream of putting up a shop that has all shades of purple painted on anything and everything still stands, but in the meantime I've created an on-line shop for all lovers of the colour to enjoy.
For starters, I have loaded the site with purply stuff to suit everyone's fancy. We can also hold auctions of purple items, or if you need to find a purple-colored item, just drop me a line <email>. Visit the site often to learn about future activities.
Oh, how lovely it is to be caught in a purple haze!
