Estepona, Andalusia

ESTEPONA  The Town

Estepona is one of the typical Andalucian  pueblos on the Costa del Sol, its
whitewashed walls and attractive narrow streets with bodegas (bars) dotted in and around the old town are very characteristic of Andalucia. Apart from the main shopping street, Calle Terraza,  there are also many  more small shops you will find throughout the town. The people enjoy a good lifestyle, strolling up and down the paseo (promenade) and taking time to sit in the well-kept garden squares. There is also a playground for children along the paseo and one in the port - the Spanish are very family orientated. The port of Estepona is a busy social happening place not only for eating but also for the market on Sundays established some 20 years ago, where you can buy everything from earrings to carpets there is also a market in the town (Juan Carlos Avenue) on Wednesdays from 10am, with lots of stalls selling typically Spanish goods. It is an excellent place to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.
The Moorish heritage is still reflected in some of the local architecture but the original mosques have all been transformed into churches and many have survived even to this day.
Along the beach there are chiringuitos (beach bars) where you can relax over lunch or dinner. In the evenings you will find many bars and restaurants minutes away on the port itself, offering Spanish and International cuisine  The largest supermarket is the Carrefour, which is a short drive along the sea front, They have a wide range of products at very good prices.
Estepona is about 40 minutes’ drive from Gibraltar and 1 hour’s drive from Malaga Airport, making it easily accessible from both airports - flights do tend to be cheaper to Malaga, though.
The easiest way to get from the airport is to hire a car which we would be happy to arrange for you. There is a new toll road that makes the travelling time from Malaga airport about 45 minutes.
If you would like to find out more about Estepona why not visit the official web site at http://www.pgb.es/estepona/html/iciudad.htm it's well worth a visit.
