"It's always nice to win something isn't it? But it's a weird one because there's nothing I can do about it now,'' Baker said at a preview party in LA. "I did all my acting last year. Who wins has already been decided,'' he said.
"Whoever is going to win is going to win -- I'm a long shot.''
Tasmania's Baker will go up against hot-favourite Jon Hamm, the star of 1960s-set drama Mad Men, House medic Hugh Laurie and three others in the best dramatic actor category.
He has become the poster boy for the CBS network since his show The Mentalist aired this season, attracting an audience of 20 million across the US.
Despite the show's prominence, he does not let his own three children, aged six to 15, watch it.
"It's too gruesome,'' he said. ``I don't like my kids watching bloody stuff.''
