JOURNALISM
My articles have appeared in The Franklin (Franklin College, IN), Challenger Newspapers (Greenwood, IN), The Franklin Daily Journal (IN), St. Helena Star (CA), Pathways to Health (Napa, CA), Napa Valley Register (CA), and Rocky Mountain News (CO). My published credits include 98 nonfiction print articles, and my articles at Suite 101 .
My nonfiction articles feature a variety of subjects including an American businessman’s adventures in Russia, a cheetah with a toothache, reflections on human nature, and experiences with music.
My adventures in fiction started in 1981, when I wrote my first novel, an 80-page contemporary / thriller / historical / mystery. It was a valiant but unfocused effort. My excuse is that I was in high school, and it was my first attempt.
In 2004 I wrote my second novel, an 800-page contemporary story with historical elements. I was pleased with this manuscript, but not after realizing it was part of a five-volume series that would require much more research.
Since then, I've been enjoying the writing process: get an idea, do the research, write the novel or short story, query an agent and/or publisher, deal with rejection, get the next idea, do the research, etc., etc. Additionally, after a long break from nonfiction projects, I've returned to developing and marketing ideas for print and online publications.
Projects have been posted here for one or more of the following reasons:
- They have been previously published elsewhere and are part of my portfolio.
- They have been rejected at least once by a publisher or editor, and for those projects, I've decided not to pursue traditional venues for publication, and have posted them here, as combination spec articles/samples of my work.
- They're simply too odd to be published elsewhere. Consider A Different Configuration . What exactly is it? The dreaded comedy/drama? A contemporary short story with just a hint of romance? Modern literature badly written? I can imagine the complaints from editors trying to classify it.
- They are here as a form of volunteer work. If you are curious about what goes through a writer's mind, or how drafts differ from one another, or how writers evaluate their projects, you may find this page valuable.
