He once said " I forbid swearing in the
army, and thats a #$%#$$#$ order!" He was 6" 2 and had size 13 feet.
He thought regular bathing was unhealthy. He only had an 8th grade education.
He was the only president not to live in the White House as it was not built
yet. His motto was " Be curteous to all, but intimate with few." His
second inaguration address was the shortest of all presidents with only 135 words.
2. John Adams Federalist,

He was so fat that sometimes his enemies
called his "His Rotundity". He lived longer than any other president. He
described his own epitaph as " Here lies John Adams who took upon himself the
responsibility of peace with France in the year 1800" Hs favorite horse was
Cleopatra. His main hobby was reading, he would say " You'll never be alone
with a poet in your pocket." He ws the first President to live in the White
House. When they first moved in, it was still unfinished, in fact, Abigail used the
East Room to hang her wash.. He was the only President thus far to enjoy seeing
his son elected President. He died the following year after seeing the 50th anniversary
of the signing of the Declaration of Independance. He died the same day as Thomas
Jefferson on the 4th of July. His dying words were " Thomas Jefferson survives?"
Unfortunately, he was wrong, as Jefferson had died a few hours earlier.
3. Thomas Jefferson Democrat-Republican,
1743-1826, President 1801-1809 Nickname: "The man of the people", VP:
Aaron Burr, George Clinton, Wife: Matha Wayles Skelton. His last name means "son
of God's Place"
He was a very well read lawyer, and coollected 65 hundred
books in a library at Monticello. He spent over 10,000 on wine during his time in
the White House and had huge grocery bills. He suffered migrane headaches that were
so severe the pain would continue for 5-6 weeks.
He once told reprimanded
his daughter for removing her sun bonnet saying" because it will make you very
ugly and then we should not love you so much." He was a skilled amateur violinist
and a very good singer. He kept a pet mockingbird in his White House study. He was
so fond of his pet, that he taught it to take food from his lips. He died on the
same day as John Adams of the the 4th of July, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration
of Independance. His last words were "Is it the Fourth?"
4. James Madison Democrat-Republican,
1751-1836, President: 1809-1817 Nickname: " father of the constitution"
and enemies called him"Little Pygmy". VP: George Clinton, Elbridge Gerry,
wife: Dolley Payne Todd
He was only 5" 2 and 100 pounds. He was the first
president to wear long pants. His wife was 17 years younger than him, he was 43
and she was 26 years old. They had no children. Awkward at parties he was ridiculed
as " the most unsociable creature in existence" He avoided all references
to the bible in private letters and public speeches. He was an episcopalian but
not very devout. He was a second cousin to Zachary Taylor.
5. James Monroe Democrat-Republican,
1758-1831, President: 1817-1825 Nickname: "Last cocked hat" VP: Daniel
Tompkins, wife: Elizabeth Kortright
He entered the college of William and
Mary when he was only 16. He was a lawyer. He wrote the Monroe Doctrine which
warned Europe against expansion in America. He was the first president to tour
the country, and the first to display his OWN hair in public! they were the first
family to have a daughter marry in the White House, and his wife only invited 30
guests. He died also on the 4th of July at age 73.
6. John Quincy Adams Democrat-Republican,
1767-1848, President: 1825-1829, VP: John Calhoun, wife: Louisa Johnson Nickname;"Old
man eloquent" His middle name came after his birthplace of Quincy, Mass. He
is the only president who also had a father who was president. He put a pool table
in the White House, and kept an alligator as a pet. he was a lawyer and not very
well liked. He wore the same hat for 10 years and once said : I am certainly not
intentiionally repulsive" He regulary swam nude in the Potomac River at 5:00
am. He was once interviewed by the first woman reporter who had been declined previous
interviews. She waited until he was in the the river then sat on his clothes and
refused to leave until she was granted an interview.!! He believed enjoyment was
a sign of weakness. He collapsed in Congress while making a speek against slavery
and died at age 80 of a stroke.
7. Andrew Jackson Democrat,
1767-1845, President: 1829-1837, VP: John Calhoun, Martin Van Buren wife: Rachel
Donelson Robards Nickname:"Old Hickory" At age 13 he joined the army
and was hit in the head by a sword, leaving a permanent scar for refusing to clean
a british officers boots. He married his wife twice, as her divorce had not been
finalized before their first wedding. His opponents used that against him, and when
his wife discovered the wicked tales about her, she died of a heart attack 3 months
before the inaugaration. One of his neighbors was so surprised to hear of his election,
she stated " If Andrew Jackson can become President, anybody can1" He
ws the first president to be born in a log cabin. At his inaugaration party there
was a huge riot with his supporters smashing glass, tracking mud over the White House
furniture, and nearly suffocating Jackson. He fled with friends, and spent his first
night as President in a hotel. He added indoor bathrooms and running water to
the White House, as well as a $300 piano. He had a parrot named Poll who knew many
swear words. He had two bullets in his body, and had one removed without anesthesia. His
last words were " Oh do not cry, be good children and we shall all meet in Heaven." He
died at age 78.
8. Martin Van Buren Democrat,
1782-1862 President:1837-1841 VP: Richard Johnson, wife:Hannah Hoes Nickname:
Little Magician He was the first American born President. He spoke Dutch at home
however. He popularized the saying " OK, referring to old kinderhook, new
york, where he came from. He tried to keep a pet of two tiger cubs at the White House
but eventually had to give them to a zoo. He was the first to campaign like a modern
day politician with speechers, rallies and fund raisers. He died at age 79.
9. William Henry
Harrison Whig,
1773-1841, President: 1841 (march-april) VP: John Tyler, wife: Anna Symmes Nickname:
Old Tippecanoe He was the first President to die in office. The first Whig party
President. The only to study to be a doctor. The first President to serve less than
one term. The only President to have a grandson become President. The first President
to be a professional soldier. He insisted on giving the longest inauguration speech
in history on a freezing cold day, and promptly caught pneumonia and died after 32
days in office. The last purchases in his life were a bible and a cow named Sukey. He
began the 20 year curse where by every President for every 20 years has either died
or been assassinated.
10. John Tyler Whig,
1790-1862, President:1841-1845, VP: none. wife: Letitia Christian (d. 1842)and
Julia Gardiner Nickname: " His accidency" he served less than one
term in office, completing Harrison's previous term. He had no vice president. His
wife died while he was in office. He later married Julia who was younger than 3 of
his daughters. He died at age 71, 18 months after the birth of his last child. He
once said he loved having a "houseful of goodly babies budding around me."
He had a total of 15 children. The Tylers gave some of the most energetic parties
ever, introducing the previously forbidden polka dance. "His Accidency"
